A good friend asked me for some 'pretty' music.  He loves his Marcia Hines and his disco, none of which appears in this mix, but I've done my best to keep things light and breezy.  The first half of this mix has some African influences mixed in with the tech sounds.  The last half of this mix is all about the floaty sound and the key changes - this is the stuff I love and could listen to all day, but not everyone's cup of tea.  I've always been drawn to the soundscape and the story a track tells me, rather than music simply designed to make you dance.  I hope you like this mix! xo

My Mum, bless her, had very eclectic taste in music.  I remember digging around in her tapes when I was a little guy, the orange and white ones used to record and listen to music back in the 70's, and finding all sorts of things from disco to Motown and everything in between.  Hot Butter's 'Popcorn' was on one of Mum's tapes, and it fascinated me above all else.  You can often hear its influence in the music I select, something my dear friend DJ Baby Bear has joked with me about for many years.   I'm a weirdo when it comes to music, I get that from my Mum.  
Anywho - in this mix, Oprah reassures you, Josh Wink takes acid on New Year's Day, and Dolores wants understanding (although my Spanish isn't great so I don't know if she's looking for it or saying she's got it?).  Laid back tunes with a techno influence.  Thanks for listening.  xo

Some mixes come to you very quickly, you find some music you like, line it all up, mix and it's done.  Others take a lot of time to pull together.  This mix took me forever to work out.  I struggled to find the music I wanted and when I eventually did find it, it took me ages to work out the best way to put it together.  Luckily for me, the weather has been terrible here on the South Coast of NSW and I've had plenty of time indoors to work on it.  No excuse for being bored! 
The music in this mix has that very etherial sound that I keep getting drawn to - lots of rich sounds, a touch orchestral in the odd place, some mellow trance elements, a dreamy track with vocals and a dub version of Roxy Music's 'Love Is The Drug', courtesy of the legendary Todd Terje who I've been following for years. 
I had a heap of other tracks I wanted to put in including a mix of New Order's 'True Faith', a great little remix of Hall and Oat's 'I Can't Go For That', and Grace Jones' classic 'Pull Up To The Bumper', but they didn't go with the sound this mix turned into.  These tracks will pop up in latter mixes when I can get them to sound good.

This mix is the result of 7 days COVID quarantine where I got to stop the world, watch a lot of sci-fi, and spend hours mixing music.  Thankfully, I wasn't too sick with the virus and was able to enjoy my time in lock down (I almost didn't want to come out!).  I used a lot of music that I had purchased but hadn't yet done anything with, sounds that are perhaps a bit darker than my usual 'popcorn' sound.  You'll hear acid (both late 80's and new), techno and organic house sounds, some of Grace Jones' late era disco, and even Barbara Streisand gets a (dubbed) look in.  When I listen to this mix, I'm transported to a dark day club somewhere deep in the city where the people there are still going from the night before, dancing and cruising, getting high and getting into it, and where time doesn't matter.  Ah the good old days!

It's the tail end of Winter on the South Coast of New South Wales and the promise of Spring is just a few weeks away.  The birds have been nesting, the trees and flowers are starting to bud and the days are starting to get longer (it's still cold though!).  I've been lucky enough to spend time with many friends and my dear family since putting the last mix together and I've been reflecting on the good in the world.  
This mix is all about love.  I wanted to put something together that was mellow and dreamy with big key changes that tugged on my heartstrings. 
I love the first track called Miracle and the more I listen to it, the more I want to hear it.  The last track, called Symphonia, made me tear up a little when I first heard it and it's my favourite sound in this mix.  Everything in between is a gentle ride of the musical genre they call Organic House.   It's a longer mix as some of the tracks are above 8 minutes long and there weren't any that I wanted to cut short.

I remember back in 1988 being 16 years old and sneaking into venues in Sydney's Newtown and Darlinghurst areas.  On one of those first nights in clubland, I descended the stairs of Sydney's Exchange Hotel to its bar on the lower level (before it was the Phoenix, it was maybe called the Saddle bar??) to follow a strange sound booming out of speakers somewhere in the fog a smoke machine was creating. Acid House was peaking in Sydney, smiley bandanas and t-shirts glowed in the fluorescents, and I was in a new and amazing world.  I fell in love with what was then, a new sound, and I still get tingles when I hear it today.  It was the start of my love of electronic music which led onto finding my tribe and so many fantastic experiences at home in Australia and overseas.  34 years later, I'm still here listening to this music (and am now mixing it again), and I am so grateful for being able to do so.  It's been a gift in my life that I owe so much to. 

Notes on the music:
A lot of the music in this mix is by contemporary producers giving a nod to the good old days of acid and Balearic. I hope the trend continues, I love this stuff. There are a couple of classics from the late 80's era, but I didn't want to overdo it with the old music too much.  The new stuff is awesome! 
If I had to pick a favourite in this mix, it would be track 4. Kuasi Riviera, by Eternal Love.  It's a recently produced track but just has that sound from back in the day that brings back so many memories.  If you've been listening to all my mixes, you'll notice I've re-used track 7.Sendling Sidewalks by Rhode & Brown which appeared in M8.  This was always the mix it was meant to be in...it's home here. 
I also couldn't leave track 8.Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerald out of this mix, even though I've used it before in M9.  It is for me the Number 1 all time acid track, groundbreaking, and still holds it own over 30 years later.
As for track 11. This is Acid by Maurice Joshua and Hot Hands Hula, well, if you were lucky enough to be peaking at The Hordern Pavilion in Sydney way back when... then you will know :) 
I tried to get both Pacific State by 808 State and The Beloved's The Sun Rising into this mix for my dear friend Deano who would have loved it... but the music files I downloaded were a little dodgy and both tracks sounded dodgy.  I'll see if I can find them somewhere else for another mix down the track.  

So much fun to be had playing around with music!

Space, and what's out there, is something I have been obsessed with since I was a little boy.  The first movie I remember seeing at the cinema was Star Wars, I was 5 years old, and the memories of that moment in time are so vivid even now in my 50's.  My Mum was into Sci-Fi and we were always watching Star Trek, V, Battlestar Galactica, Space 1999 - you name it, I've seen it; and our bookshelves were full of Asimov, Herbet and Sagan.  I've read them all! 
This mix is a little ode to Ellen Ripley and her journey out in space, back to Earth, and then back out to space again - so much suffering for one character, yet such a bad ass.  She's awesome.  It's beautiful and lonely and dangerous out there, Ripley sums it up and that's the vibe in the music I've selected for M15. 
This mix is also an ode to the Double Touch team who appear in this mix no less than 3 times.  I have some of their music in most of my mixes, and their latest stuff is fantastic.  I don't have a favourite track in this mix, I love each of them so much.  That said, track 3 'Rocket To Lee's Little Cloud' is one I've used before (M6) and it's up there with my all time favourite track. Track 8 'Somebody up There Loves You' by Lee Burridge and Lost Desert is one I want to hear high as a kite on a dance floor, it's such a peaky track... and the two vocal tracks in this mix, Track 5 'Storm' by Double Touch/Reigan and Track 7 'Nothing To Lose' by Dulus are simply superb.  
   
I hope you enjoy this little journey into space with Ripley as planets pass by with nebulae and galaxies in the distance and aliens somewhere close at hand in the shadows.

So.. clearly I'm totally crushing on Lee Burridge at the moment.  His music gets lumped into the Organic House genre, but really, he is his own thing.  He has this very kooky, melancholy, slow tech sound which I can't get enough of.  He's a great producer and a great DJ. Years ago, back in the 90's when I was DJ'ing, this type of music was very rare - house music could be cheesy at times and trance and techno was produced at the higher end of the BPM scale; I used to pick tracks back then that had the big key changes and the melancholia but they we were all very fast.  If the style of music that I'm playing now had of been around at that time, I like to think I would have played it.    
With a nod to the past, I've put the tracks 'Cafe del Mar' and 'Why Does My Heart' into this mix.  I am old enough to remember when Cafe del Mar was first released, it's been remixed so many times, but I like this version - great memories for me. 
As for Moby - I saw him DJ at a rave in Sydney in perhaps 1991 or 1992 when his track 'Go' was huge and I love a lot of the stuff he's done post rave days.
I love 'Tides of Fortune' by Death on the Balcony - it's a few years old but it's 5am dance floor K music and it's superb fun.  I've re-used Fulltone's 'C'est Bon' for a 2nd time (it's in M3 - Ueno Park)- I just love the strangeness of it and it's off key heaven.

If you have ever experienced strong deja vu, which happens to me from time to time, spare a thought for Dolores Abernathy. Dolores, Westworld's supreme anti hero, was constantly forced to consider the nature of her reality.  Had she seen, heard or done it before?  Was she living in the past, present or future?  Stuck in endless loops of predefined narratives and storylines, most of which resulted in pain and grief before she is 'reset' for another round, Dolores thankfully figures it all out.  By choice, beauty and light win in the end, but only by choice - given what Dolores had been through, she could easily have chosen the dark.  Like all great anti heroes, Dolores is profoundly flawed, but that's why we love her.  As a creature of A.I., she's more human than human, and great sci-fi is exactly that, it's only ever really about what it is that makes us human.

Music notes: 
There's several gold nuggets in this mix.  I've squeezed one more Lee Burridge track into another mix with track 2.Diving Bell.  Funky, techy, dreamy.  Pure Burridge.  I can't get enough of track 5. Cloud 9 by Jay Newman, it's so layered and I hear different things each time I listen.  A fairly new producer on my radar by the name of Cahelo gives us track 6 and 7 - Bananaquit and Elsewhere respectively, both are magical, but Elsewhere is at the top of the list for me right now. It's one of the best examples of the organic house genre and I couldn't love it any more.  My other favourite in this mix is track 8. Skywriting by Alberto Hernandez (MX) and Dulus.  It's a euphoric ride with an addictive clip clop.  Superb!  I also have a little crush on Dulus just quietly... he appears in M15-Ripley's Theme (track 7. Nothing To Lose), I love his work and he's a bit of a cutey too...
The last two tracks, track 9. When All Becomes Dust by Awka and Baya, and track 10. Adventures of an Untold Story (Original 12") by Vandelor and Schmidt (BR), are very Dolores Abernathy, track 10 even has a little sample of Bernard Lowe from Westworld asking that famous question to Dolores and the other hosts.  Unfortunately, both tracks 9 and 10 were not great quality, I tried so hard to get them to sound right and it's one of the reasons this mix took so long, I couldn't leave them out.  You can hear they're a bit 'scratchy' if you're really paying attention. 

Like the hosts who are reset in Westworld, or us ordinary humans waking each day and sitting down to breakfast, 4x4 electronic music is just a serious of loops.

The inspiration for this mix came from a recent trip to Vanuatu for a dear friend's significant birthday (happy birthday Gordo, we love you!).  We stayed on the island of Espiritu Santo, and one day we took a day trip to one of the island's famous blue holes.  The water was very deep and I have never seen water so blue; the contrast with the green jungle around it looked like somewhere on the exoplanet Pandora. We swam and played in the warm water for a couple of hours and it was one of the most magical things I've ever done. The cover art is a real photo of this place, unfiltered. Simply amazing.

Notes on the music: 
This is my 20th published mix!... (well, it's actually the 21st because Mix 7 comes in two parts).  How did that happen?  Time flies when you're having fun.  I use Serato software to mix music, and this mix is the first where I've been game enough to use their new 'Stems' feature; if you don't know what this is, the software can split a track out into its various elements, allowing the DJ to remove those elements from the track in any combination.  You can, more or less, then make your own little remixes on the fly.  It's a very cool feature, albeit a little clunky in its early stages, but Stems will no doubt get much better as it evolves.
I went for a trippy, dreamy mode for this mix, and used a few unused and older tracks in this mix.  Amonita and Tim Green feature heavily in this mix, I am a huge fan of both of them.  Track 6 - Stay by Amonita is so lovely and Tim Green's take on  Serious Dancers 'Calllahan' (Track 7) improves on an original I didn't think could be improved.  
I looped a lot of vocals in this mix using Stems.  Track 11, Happy Together by The Turtles is the original song with everything stripped out except the vocals, then layered onto Track 10 - From Here To There In Under a Second. There's a few other examples of this approach throughout the mix.  Then on Track 12 - Losing My Religion by Samantha Loveridge and Treetalk, I used Stems to drop the bass line at the beginning of the track, and then, I changed the drums,  bass line and melody to Track 13's -The Blue Lagoon on the transition out.  I hope it works! 
I also purposely made long transitions between most of the tracks to accentuate the strange and kooky sounds in a lot of this music. It's meant to be floaty, you're swimming in a psychedelic blue love lagoon after all!   
Favourite track?  Have to say it's Track 15... can't beat Makebo remixing Amonita... kooky techy stuff is my fave and this track is all that.

I love lots of different sounds, a bit of techno here, some light and fluffy organic house there, and some acid, deep house and tech house in between; there’s something in most genres that will catch my ears. I’ve been stuck on the organic house sound for a while, and I felt like changing tact with this mix by putting together some music that had a bit more grunt.  M21 is still on the downtempo end of the scale at only 123BPM, but there’s some deeper stuff, acid elements throughout, and more base in different places which has been fun to play with.  When I listen to this mix, my imagination takes over and I find myself thinking of a nightclub somewhere in outer space, where robots are having a boogie on a dance floor as they take in views of distant galaxies and ringed planets.  Some of this music sounds (to me) like alien robots communicating with each other…. I need to lay off the cookies :).  This is a mix for no other reason than for music’s sake.  

Music notes: 
I landed on this order of tracks after spending many hours rearranging this mix.  Tracks 2 through to 6 are more on the deep house/deep tech side of things, I felt they needed to be grouped together.  Tracks 7 to 10 are more melodic and so I grouped them together for a change of pace, then tracks 11 to 13 take things up for the end.  There are acid sounds throughout the mix (I’ve always loved it) to tie it all together. 
I took Malcom McLaren’s absolute classic track 12. Something’s Jumping In My Shirt and used stems to layer it over track 11. Be My Lover.  Track 12 was an ecstasy anthem back in the heyday with its peaky acid elements; track 11 has its own acid sound and it was great to mix these two up.  It took many takes to get it right!  I love the reimagining of Missing (track 7) and Double Touch do it again with big beautiful key changes with track 13, Chasing Sunsets (love seeing Aussies bring it!) Favourite track? For me, has to be track 4. Nothingness, it’s got deep house elements but it’s not quite deep house.  Anything Mustafa Ismaeel touches sounds fantastic and he appears twice in this mix, I’m a fan! 

This will be the last mix for a couple of months as I’m travelling through August and September, so I’ll see you again in October for something new to listen to.  In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this mix and thank you for listening, I am very grateful.

I was suffering a severe case of jet lag a few weeks back and was finding myself waking up at 1am for nearly a week.  In the quiet of night, tired but unable to sleep, I kept myself busy looking for music to put into Mix 22.  I wanted to do a little ode to Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games and found a heap of music I liked, but when I started to put the mix together I realised it all sounded a bit depressing.  Must of been the combination of the lack of sleep and the inspiration for the mix (Katniss’ world is a very sad one after all).  With that realisation, I decided to do a U-turn and put a mix together that was bright and happy to ward off the jet lag, and so I came up with this combination of sounds for M22. 

Music notes: 
To be honest, there isn’t a lot of complicated mixing in this mix; a few times I used stems to isolate vocals and remove melody, but the rest is straight forward mixing.  Some of my favourite sounds in this mix are track 4-Rainbow by Dre Guazzelli & Drellrium, track 5- The Moon and the Stars by Newman (I Love), and track 10-Gold of Gold of Gold by Tim Green (is that Jimmy Somerville in there?).  However, my absolute favourite track in the mix is track 7- A Guy Called Ra by Anjei and Anjei & Ego; this little number kicks in at about 40mins into the mix, it's an Erdi Imrak remix and it's a beauty… it’s so euphoric!  When I listen to this track, I imagine I am in a field at a dawn rave back in the late 80’s/early 90’s, the sun is coming up and everyone is loved up with hands in the air.  Such an amazing track.

This little mix is for my dear friend Dean.  We’ve been great friends for over 30 years and have shared many good times both on and off the dance floor.  Dean’s a native Londoner who came to Australia in the late 80’s for a look and ended up having such a good time that he stayed for roughly 25+ years before heading back to Old Blighty.  Music has always been such a huge part our friendship - we’ve danced to it all; the techno days, the house music days, the deep house days, the camp disco days… many stories and fuzzy memories.  So many musical reference points that putting a mix together for Dean was a fun rabbit hole of epic proportions!

Notes on the music 
So many ways I could have taken this mix… acid, techno, house…? In the end, I went for more of a deep house vibe with a nod to the glory days, but I didn’t want to lay it on too thick with the old stuff.  The result, most of the music in this mix is new but sounds old school, with some true old school sounds and tracks layered on top.   
I loved putting the famous acid track ‘This is Acid’ over track 1. Djambore; likewise putting one of the original Belgian techno anthems ‘Magic Orchestra’ over track 4. Amber.  Death on the Balcony’s track 3.Many Different Ways and track 7. Carry It With Us are both really long and give the mix its deep house roots.  Track 9. Forever by Gorje Hewek and Dulus is a nod to London Town; and for no other reason that I love the track and she’s British, listen out for Maggie Smith sharing wisdom in track 10. Evolution by LDS.  Track 12. Kuasi Riveria by Eternal Love is one I’ve used before (M13), it’s got that acidy vibe from way back, love it. 
Finally, you can’t have a nod to the past without the legends Frank De Wulf and Inner City (tracks 11 and 15 respectively).

Ring time Sis…. 
As I’ve been digging around in the world of online music stores in recent times, I’ve started noticing an increase in sounds inspired by Arabia, some of which is very good stuff indeed. From time to time over the last year or so, I’ve picked up tracks with a Alvibe that I have particularly liked and have been storing them for a rainy day.
Electronic music has always taken me on a journey.  This mix got me thinking about Shazzan, the classic cartoon from the late 1960s that was on high repeat on our TV when I was a young boy growing up in the 1970s. It was such a magical thing to watch as a child. I went through some of the Shazzan cartoons on YouTube to get the soundbites I liked for this mix and found myself transported back to the floor of my lounge room in the suburb of Sydney where I grew up, where I would have my chin in my hands watching with wide eyes. Looking at Shazzan through adult eyes, it’s still pretty cool, although I have to say Chuck now appears to be a brat with an anger management issue, poor Nancy… that aside, who wouldn’t want a winged camel and a genie on call? 😊 

Music notes: 
Amongst the newer music in this mix from my collection, I’ve dug out two of my favourite oldies that you would have heard before if you’ve been following me for a while; track 4, Bending The Light by Enamour is a few years old but I would play it time and again as it’s just so good, and Track 8, 1001 Nights by Serious Dancers (who appear twice in this mix along with Track 6, Qallin). 1001 Nights makes its 3rd appearance in one of my mixes, this mix is its home however.  There’s lots of soundbites from the cartoons layered in too.  This mix was a lot of work and a lot of fun.
