Defoo : Clumsy Love

From Sneek in the northern province of Friesland, 100 miles north-east of the Amsterdam, Ferdy Ouderkerken has been a stalwart of the underground dance community for over a decade. Joining forces with his fellow countryman, Ferdy and Daniel van der Zwaag now present, "My Polyphone Girl" on Particles.

With an eclectic taste, including Sasha and The Doors shaping his unique sonic identity, Ferdy has always found music at the epicentre of his development. Smashing headlong into the production process with incredible early achievements, 3 Global Underground singles aged 20 and a contract for 4 tracks signed to Armin van Buuren's label under the Mathijs van Dijk moniker, were augmented by releases on the Nick Warren led Hope Recordings and Eelke Kleijn's Outside the Box. Allied to a DJ career that saw performances at GU nights in the Netherlands and a host of parties across the country, Ferdy's name has been lit brightly.

Taking a more considered approach to his craft, towards the end of the last decade, Ferdy continues to develop and evolve his unique production style that sits somewhere between the ambient and techno arenas with a focus on "musical feeling". Thirty production credits with Particles tell their own story as a plethora of original material in the shape of the seven-track "Spaceman" and six-track "Crossroads" EPs have continually showcased the Dutch producer's inspiring sound. Working with fellow Sneek resident, talented musician and renowned local DJ, Daniel van der Zwaag, the pair found success on Particles with the "Raindrops" EP in February 2015, before the wonderful "Dust" EP in March 2016 showcased a stunning twin-track EP that shimmered in analogue glory. As Ferdy and Daniel van der Zwaag now return to the label a year later, "My Polyphone Girl" continues their relationship with five new pieces.

Opening proceedings, "The Night is Reading" is full of ambient textures and field recordings of muted laughter and revelry. Marked by a raid-fire vocal snippet that proclaims the title, emotive piano chord progressions repeat atop a subtle percussive texture to create depth. The title track itself is a laid-back deep house number that trips along with a light melodic air and swung percussive groove. With a summery vibe, a joyous lead line is reprised throughout and a distorted vocal cut provides additional intrigue in "My Polyphone Girl".

"The Agitation" immediately delights with its deep house structure and Russel Brand monologue that decries a lack of political representation and drug law frustration. Genre chords create a delicious cadence alongside a ticking percussive groove, before a luscious pad progression keeps interest high and the periodic repetition of Brand's vocal sample stimulates. "Secret" is a light and airy offering that blends hypnotic arpeggio sequence with evolving freeform melodic flow and disguised vocal sounds. The addition of an offbeat techno pattern retains rhythmic identity and white noise and spot effects add generous texture. "Blijheid" sees a return to rich deep house vibes as a delayed vocal sample piques interest. A hypnotic arpeggio sequence repeats throughout in subtle variation to create a melodic bed while layers of hi hats and shakers provide a unique percussive cadence that shuffles in striking groove.

Epitomising modern production techniques, Ferdy and Daniel van der Zwaag have created a quintet of tracks that showcase a raft of melodic instrumentation and interplay through "My Polyphone Girl".

36’s music is often associated with and influenced by the futuristic, cyberpunk side of ambient music. His ability to transport and portray new worlds evident through his 2016 album on ASIP, The Infinity Room, or any of his self-released works.

It’s of no surprise then to see his return to ASIP take this exploration one-step further. However, instead of the more obvious themes that come with cyberpunk, such as technological fetishism or vapid aesthetics, Dennis Huddleston has decided to focus on the isolation of individuals, using (and often abusing) technology as a means of escapism - a side of cyberpunk that often goes unnoticed when it comes to the musical depictions that come with it.

Fade To Grey reflects on current social paradigms, where social media has become a weak substitute for human interaction. Rather than bringing people together, it often makes us feel lonelier than ever. As evident in the album's artwork, technology is shown to be far from benign. The soft, gentle elegance of watercolor is juxtaposed by the violent splatters of machinery. Every vice has its price.

Considering the landscape of our own world right now, where a handful of companies control everything we consume, where convenience is more important than privacy, where personal choice is pre-determined by algorithms analyzing our behavior, and where the internet has become a battleground for influence and propaganda... It's not a stretch of the imagination to believe we're already witnessing our very own dystopia.

We are really excited to share our new 'Earth'-inspired single... This one's a bit different, and harks back to the sound of some of our songs from our Seasons album. The lyrics lean into the abstract, reflecting on the healing properties of rest and darkness - for ourselves and the environment around us. Alongside this, we aimed to capture the essence of night with the instrumentation - all of the 'night' sounds you hear in the track were actually recorded on our 'home' island of Ma Wan, here in Hong Kong.
