I wrote “She’s What We Need” because I believe there is a gross underrepresentation of women in our society - whether that be on festival lineups, in board rooms or in congress. The scale has been tipped for as long as anyone can remember, and now, it would seem, we are toppling over. We need women’s voices - we need everyone’s voice - in order to implement and maintain balance in this world. The world and its people benefit when everyone can be heard equally.

This is the second of two versions of this song. While the first version sounds more polished, I wanted this one to sound like a rallying cry. I wanted it to be something you could sing in the streets or at a march, without accompaniment - like a hymn or a prayer. It's not a plea. It's not asking for help. We're lifting one another up, because that's where our power is.

She's What We Need

I wrote "Take Me, Too" shortly after moving to Los Angeles to pursue music. The weight of my pursuit was crushing. I knew two people, I couldn't find a steady job and I didn't know where to begin. More than anything, I wanted to jump ahead to the place in my story that said, "and she lived happily ever after." I didn't want to do the leg work, stumble through awkward open mic nights or do anything that challenged me or my sense of self. 

This month, it'll be five years since I moved and I'm so grateful for the fact that I couldn't jump ahead. A happy ending is nothing without the hero's journey. A promotion doesn't feel right unless it's earned. And playing bigger stages doesn't mean a dang thing unless you've spent time trying to sing over people at a crowded bar. So, while I had wanted more than anything to wish my time away, I'm so glad now that I couldn't.
