Al Wootton returns to ZamZam with two more stunning sides of deep dubwise for late and later. It’s been a prolific year and a half since his last ZamZam, with multiple killer 12”s and an LP on his own Trule label, a four-tracker for Livity Sound, and two thrilling EPs as Holy Tongue alongside drummer Valentina Magaletti. Informed equally by UK dub, garage, roots reggae and techno, Al Wootton creates unique amalgams that always hit, and this 7” adds to that legacy in fine style.  

‘Every Knee Shall Bow’ opens with swimming percussion and echoing pads, ramping the tension before dropping into a potent, simmering 4/4 powerhouse, a perfect marriage of steppers and dub techno, at once visceral and cerebral, up front & deep, clear yet heavily atmospheric. Galloping drums, massive reverb splashes and FX, a wide-eyed drop into space… pure fire for the dancers. 

B Side 'Every Tongue Confess,’ drops the tempo down to 120, pulling us into pure heartbeat territory with drum kit, bass guitar, live percussion and keys all played by the artist and dubbed hands-on-desk style. A deep internal grounation in the timeless Count Ossie to Rhythm & Sound continuum, this is true healing music whether on a proper Sound or at home on the hi-fi.

Alchemy Dubs is proud to present our second release on 7” format.
This is the second volume of our Melodica Trilogy, that consists of three different melodica tracks performed by three different players (limited edition of 500 units each). All with dubs on the B side, as usual.

After the slow-paced “Magma” that features Camila M on melodica, we are now speeding up the tempo on this one, Light & Power, a track that features the mighty Nik Torp on melodica and is produced by Ojah.

On the A side we find Nik’s wild melodica version featuring super-fast live arpeggios and multiple experimental melodica tricks, taking the instrument to old and new territories at the same time. A true master’s performance.

On the B side we find a spacey stripped-down dub version, in this case executed by Ojah at Alchemy Dubs Studio.

Lewis Hopkin has managed to cut an incredible amount of sub-bass on this 7”, but don’t take our word for it, check it for yourself and you shall hear and feel, earth-shaking material!

Mixed by Ojah, mastered via 1/2 inch tape by Lewis Hopkin and served in a thick kraftliner sleeve.

Limited edition of 500 copies, hand-stamped and hand-numbered.

King Alpha ft. Fikir Amlak - Rasta Tell Dem + Rasta Dub Dem

ZamZam 67 sees the eagerly-awaited return of the man called Versa (AKA Michael Nickless AKA Michael Versa).  Over 10 years deep in the dub game, Versa came to prominence through a string of mesmerizing releases, notably a pair of singles on VIVEK’s System label.  His first outing on ZamZam (alongside partner Rowl on the B side) went down a treat worldwide - hard to believe it was fully two dozen ZamZams ago!  It’s always a special kind of pleasure to have an artist back for a second chapter, and this one is a must. 

“Seed” opens with the sound of distant thunder, minimal pads, and a time-honored bass & kick combination, elemental steppers for the ages making no concessions to fashion or trend.  Melodica drives through the storm, with delicately plucked guitar and FX bubbling to the surface in a reverb-soaked landscape.  Much more than the sum of its parts, “Seed"’s power is in its restraint, its knowledge of its roots, and its confidence in the timeless quality of well-tuned instruments and careful dub mixing.

“Planting” inches the tempo up yet feels much slower, lulling us into a hazy world of lurching half-time magic, with all the same instrumentation in dynamic play, yet creating wildly contrasting results.  With chasms of reverb, smeared snares and guitar taking a much greater role in the shimmering dubwise play of absence and presence, dappled light and twilight dark, “Planting” will also pitch up nicely for an unforgettable appearance in a next 140 set. 

Versa’s deep knowledge of dub and reggae, along with his masterful approaches to techno and deep bass music more generally, makes every release a powerful yet understated event for sound system addicts.
