Falling Up

A full soundboard for 10 Crowns, a character in the Cantata game by Afterschool Studio. These sounds feature voice recordings from ten individuals, spliced and digitally processed to produce the effect of multiple voices expressing emotional experiences as one collective entity.

Hope degrades into faith.

This is an excerpt from a little cycle of pieces: first, 16th cent. composer John Mundy's "Daleth" (left out here), then this "Transition", and finally 20th century composer Cyrillus Kreek's "Kui suur on meie vaesus" ("Whilst great is our poverty, greater still is our blessing") with an original sax line sitting atop it.

Written in 2017 for The IOTA Project, a doomed VR project that would have been wild.

The brief for this was something like: Miami Vice, Godzilla, post-apocalyptic, beachy, frenetic, goofy, an epic struggle for the survival of our species.

It took a year to find The Language.  I was hoping to find one magic poem specifically about verbal communication, the dangerous power of words, and how difficult it is to say what you mean to say using words alone.  Reading and rereading The Language left me emotional and confused; it was a perfect fit.

The central contradiction in the poem is that Words definitely do not say everything, which is widely known by readers of official press releases, work emails, and five-paragraph essays, or by anyone in a job interview or on a date.  Despite being “full of holes”, we allow written words to have an overriding effect and we let the loudest speech trample any soft dissent.  “I love you” is not immune – the phrase is loaded with meaning, but can be made empty through casual use, or smothered with anger (as in “teeth and eyes, bite”.)  It also often manages to be communicated without any words at all, and sometimes that's the best way.

This poem challenged me to “say what you mean to say” but also forced me to acknowledge that we can’t.

The Language (for choir)

A track from the original soundtrack to Blade Ballet, available now on PS4 and Steam.

In the future, the bots of Blade Ballet strove to recreate human musical traditions as a backdrop for their chaotic battlescape. Faced with an overwhelming task, they combined disparate musical ingredients and devised an algorithm to haphazardly join them together. 

Combine waltz, basse dance, galliard, dub, prepared piano, gated synth, much reverb, bVI, arpeggios. Blend.

Kilowaltz

A few weeks of prototyping game ideas in VR led to this track, a mismash of textures, instruments, and styles inspired by DreamSail Games' experimental projects.

Phone Home

An aching, dramatic re-scoring of a scene from the 2006 film Children of Men (dir. Alfonso Cuaron).  Recorded using a live, full orchestra, comprised of professional and student musicians, at NYU's Loewe Theater.  Featuring violin, viola, cello, and acoustic guitar solos.

A dramatic, cerebral score for a short animation.  Featuring a chamber ensemble of ten, including strings, woodwinds, piano, harp, and vibraphone, recorded in the Dolan studio at NYU's Steinhardt School.
