“Migraciones Nocturnas” (Spanish for Nocturnal Migrations) is a piece for clarinet and piano divided in two movements.

The programmatic and narrative idea behind the piece is related to the profound and gradual change that is imply in the migration process, either as a human or as a natural phenomenon.

Musically is represented by a big thematic material that is developed during the whole piece. This material is continuously transformed in several ways, from dissonant harmonies from evocative rhythms from a foreign land.

Migraciones Nocturnas won the Second Prize in the Robert Avalon International Composers Competition (Professional Category) and the Audience Award.

ACERCA DE LA OBRA

“Escenas Dancísticas” es un obra basada en un tema, de carácter pasional y convulso, originalmente creado como parte de la música para el espectáculo dancístico “Las Mujeres Decentes de la Calle 58” del grupo estadunidense Asheville Contemporary Dance Theater. Dicha coreografía estaba a su vez basada en el libro homónimo del antropólogo danés Christian Rasmussen, que consiste en una serie de entrevistas a prostitutas de la ciudad de Mérida, que trabajan en la zona de alta marginalidad de la calle 58, en el centro de la ciudad.
Lejos de condenar, las entrevistas de Rasmussen son una mirada fresca al mundo complejo que lleva a muchas mujeres a ejercer este oficio y retrata la humanidad detrás de cada una de las entrevistadas. 
Con esto en mente, decidí escribir una serie de variaciones que se tocan sin interrupciones, y que desarrollan diferentes aspectos del tema: desde pasajes altamente disonantes, pasando por momentos de gran lirismo, hasta secciones contrapuntísticas. De la misma forma que las entrevistas de Rasmussen dejan entrever un ángulo diferente a un mismo tema, mi obra aspira a tener una visión poliédrica de un mismo material musical.

“Escenas Dancísticas” fue galardonada con la Primera Mención en el Concurso de Composición “Nuestra América” y está dedicada al Cuarteto Chroma.

ABOUT THE PIECE:
“Escenas Dancísticas” (Spanish for Dance Scenes) is based in a passionate melody in F-minor, originally composed for the US-Based dance company “Asheville Contemporary Dance Theater”. The original plot of the choreography was based in a book of interviews that the Danish anthropologist Christian Rasmussen conducted to prostitutes of the Calle 58 (58th Street), a impoverished zone of prostitutes in the city of Mérida, in the southeast of México.
Rather than condemn or accuse, the interviews are a fresh view to the complex world of prostitution, and depicts the humanity behind everyone of the women interviewed.
With that in mind, I tried to compose a set of variations that are played without interruptions, which develop a different aspect of the thematic material: ranging from highly complex dissonant harmonies to intimate and lyrical moments. The same way that Rasmussen’s interviews shed light of a highly marginalized group of women, I hope that my music can create a polyhedral view of a music material.

“Escenas Dancísticas” is dedicated to the CHROMA String Quartet and was awarded with the Second Place in "Nuestra América" Composition Competition.

Obra ganadora del "Concurso Nacional Estudiantil de Composición 2010"

Escrita para Flauta, Clarinente, Violín, Cello y Piano, está obra está basada en el cuento "La culpa es de los Tlaxcaltecas" de Elena Garro. Divida en cuatro movimientos que emulan los tiempos en los que se desarrolla la obra literaria.

Interpretada por el "Ensamble de la Rosas" bajo la dirección del autor.

Pieza compuesta por encargo de Miguél Ángel Castellanos, a quien está dedicada.

Toma su nombre de una traducción literal de la palabra "Ordre", término francés que se refería a un conjunto de danzas, comunmente conocido como "suite". 

Al igual que una suite (o un "ordre"), la pieza toma elementos de la música popular bailable, en este caso la de origen afro-caribeño que actualmente es muy popular en toda latinoamérica.

Esta pieza fue grabada en el disco del Mtro. Castellanos, "...la que sigue"

ORDEN (2009) para guitarra sola

Compuesta en el 2011, Re(b)-Do-ble es una pieza en la que desarrollo mi aproximación las ideas de repetición y proceso, todo bajo el tamiz de una melodía, de mi autoría, en el estilo de una balada de jazz.
 
El título deriva de el material interválico que utilizo, así como la alusión al redoblar de un tambor. 

Fue estrenada en el concierto de clausura del VIII Festival Internacional de Música de Morelia por el saxofonista francés Sylvain Vergés, esta es la grabación de dicho concierto.

Alejandro Basulto-Martínez (1984) 

Alejandro’s composition style is characterized by a blend of diverse composition techniques and references to contemporary popular music. His music has been performed by Morgan Szymanski and the Orchestra of the Swan, Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, CEPROMUSIC, Mexico City Wood Wind Quintet, Macedonia Radio Orchestra and Sequenza Sur, among others, in festivals such as the Cervantino, Miguel Bernal Jiménez and New Music Forum Manuel Enríquez. Alejandro has composed music for several multimedia projects and films, including numerous collaborations with Mexican award-winning studio Ava Animación y Artes Visuales, which range from the world’s biggest projection mapping in Romania (iMapp Bucharest) to the Russian festival Circles of Light at the Bolshoi Theater. Alejandro’s awards include the Mexican National Orchestral Composition Competition "Jalisco 2016", Alabama Association Composition Competition (2016), Second Prize and Audience Award in the Robert Avalon International Composer Competition, Professional Category (2016), First Prize in the International Composition Competition “Manuel Enríquez” (2015), Second Place in the Composition Competition “Nuestra América” (2014), the “Youth Award in Arts” from the State of Yucatán (2012), First Place in the National Competition for Composition Students (2010), among others. Upcoming engagements include commissions by the  Fort Bend Orchestra (Texas), a regular season debut concert with the Barcelona Symphonic Band.

Alejandro holds a Bachelor’s degree from the “Conservatorio de las Rosas” (cum laude) where his principal teacher was Dr. Javier Álvarez, a Master’s degree in Film Scoring and a graduate diploma in Orchestral Conducting from the ESMUC (Barcelona, Spain) where he studied with Dr. Salvador Brotons. He earned the Fulbright-García Robles scholarship to study a Master’s Degree in Music Composition at the Moores School of Music-University of Houston, under the guidance of Dr. Rob Smith, where he is the Assistant Director of AURA Contemporary Music Ensemble. Alejandro was born and raised in Mérida, Yucatán in the southeast of México.
