A soul passing time in quiet captivity, watching the light beyond the bars. The piece follows the shape of longing - not its fulfillment, but its endurance. A reverie of hope, memory, and the weight of what remains just out of reach.

The Blowfly Commune OST - The Ritual (OST Composing Jam: Crunchtime 04)

My Submission to the OST Composing Jam: Crunchtime 04 hosted on itch.io. 

The prompt was to "Create an original soundtrack for an imaginary game.
In 48 hours." with the chosen theme of "Freedom".

I decided to go with a Locked-Room style puzzle game to fit the theme of freedom. In The Grandiose Tale of Perigreen Manor, you'd play as a young lady who received a cryptic invite to the infamous Perigreen Manor. Once inside, you'd find yourself trapped, with nothing but your sharp wits, scathing sarcasm, and the Perigreen's pet bird and companion, Crow. Solving each room's puzzles would allow you to progress further into the manor, all the while a larger mystery unfolds. What secrets does the Perigreen family hide, and will you make it out the manor alive?

I wanted to go for something a little different than the immediate thought of "grand victory" or "defying all odds" when it comes to the theme. I wanted to take the theme a little more casually than that, and write an OST that reflects the quirkiness of the manor, the confidence of the protagonist, and the resolution of the overarching mystery in the game as you beat all the puzzles and finally gain freedom.

"Itchy Brain", is an imaginary game thought of for the OST composing jam.  It's about impulsive thoughts. Every impulsive thought passing feeling our protagonist has becomes real, without exception.  He has total freedom of expression, with no restrictions - often to his own detriment. To match this idea, the track contains a lot of crescendos, anticipation, a fast beat, and far too much  bass for any car speakers to render properly!  I'll revisit this track after the jam period is over for some tune ups.

Impulse Control

These tracks have been made for the OST Composing Jam: Crunchtime 04.

The theme "Freedom" and the picture theme (credits to @the_misty_eden) were incredible, and although I had only around 7 hours to dedicate myself to this, and thus could not introduce the track in between "Prison" and "A Leap of Faith" (it would have been called "Struggle"), I'm still happy I got something out there.

I haven't done anything music related since the last OST Jam, which are in line with the theme funnily enough. So this was my way of coming back and trying again, and trying to take that leap of faith that would get me out of my mind prison.

A Leap of Faith

The soundtrack for "Imprisoned" follows a child who is trapped in the shadows, longing for the warmth of the sun. To break free, the child must gather the courage to acknowledge the darkness around them; only then will they be able to make the journey through darkness to light. 

I decided to make the soundtrack sort of as one song that is broken into pieces. Each piece represents a different part of the character's journey. Motifs are re-used constantly throughout; I attempted to introduce them and then warp them with the tone of each area. I don't know if I got it 100% right, and there are some parts that are pretty nutty/experimental, but it was certainly a fun challenge!

This soundtrack was made using Reaper with Kontakt, Shreddage, Serum, Battery, and various other VSTs for mixing (mostly Ozone.)
