This travelogue grazes across sonic neighborhoods that might resemble Tbilisi, Batumi, Toronto, Havana, St. Petersburg, Ulyanovsk, Strasbourg, Marseille, Naples, Reggio Calabria, Lisbon and Barcelona. Or at least, the sound sources, the original copies, were first heard there.

What a relief to arrive at last in this new city. Your feet are restless, they take you across bridges and underneath construction sites, under the river even, where you embrace views that make you feel like you have ears all over your new body.


Most of the recordings were made in 2018-2020 with Tascam DR-05 recorder and clippy EM172 omnidirectional microphones.

Recorded at around 06:20 (ACDT) near Long Point, Coorong National Park. Singing Honeyeaters (Gavicalis virescens) are one of the first species to call before dawn, often in duet. (The vehicle heard in the distance to the right is the fisherman who can be heard in the following recording.)

No processing. 96/24 wav to 48/24 flac. (The constant low frequency background sound is the signature sound of the Coorong: the sound of the open ocean as filtered by a 130 kilometre (81 mile) barrier of high and wide sand dunes enclosing a saltwater lagoon of equal length. The Coorong lifeworld exists within this incessant enwombing sound. Recorded on land of the Ngarrindjeri people that is now a national park.

It's impossible to overstate how completely blanketed by propaganda distortion the Ukraine war is. US spooks saying they're leaking disinfo to the press, Ukrainian war propaganda, the blackout on Ukrainian losses, the uncritical media acceptance of allegations against Russia, etc. This war is a propaganda campaign wrapped in a psyop.

The Forêt des Cedres (cedar forest) is one of the most unusual of the forests and green spaces of the Luberon massif, given the oriental origin of these large trees. At an altitude of 727 metres, the cedar forest was originally planted with seeds from the Algerian Middle Atlas, back in 1861.

Due to it's altitude and distance from major towns and roads, the forest is very quiet and makes for a perfect recording location. I arrived an hour before sunrise intending to record the spring dawn chorus. As I approached the entrance to the forest I heard a nightingale singing so I slowly approached, getting as close to the bird's song post without disturbing it. I setup my mics using the "tree ears" technique: spaced omnis with the tree trunk acting as a natural baffle.

Common Nightingale - Forêt des Cèdres du Luberon, France

(Please note: The following description was added one day after this track was first posted, and after a few listeners had liked it. In all fairness, since the description wasn't there when those listeners liked it, it should be said that they may not necessarily agree with what I've expressed below...)

This recording was especially made as a contribution to the Northern Hemisphere's ''International' Dawn Chorus Day'. Personally, I prefer to call it 'Northern Hemisphere Dawn Chorus Day', because in the Northern Hemisphere it is Spring and the days are long, while in the Southern Hemisphere it is Autumn and the nights are long. For that reason, I would prefer to celebrate a complementary 'Southern Hemisphere Dawn Chorus Day'. The complementary polar date would be the first Sunday in November.

However, here where I live, a human-concocted curse called 'Daylight Saving' is inflicted (for human economic reasons) on much of Nature from the first Sunday of October every year until the first Sunday in April of the following year. One of the most significant consequences of this curse is that, in most places, First Light, and the Dawn Chorus (also known as The Hour of the Birds), are never truly free of the contamination of human economic activity and the vast noise that goes with it. Nature is never given time to be itself, to hear itself, except in its remotest parts (and even then, of course, there are the jets, carrying busy little humans to and fro across the skies). Even so, I believe it is good and wholesome to seek out, be immersed in, absorb, enjoy, and celebrate the dawn; and perhaps, in this way, inspire others with a sense of the importance and value of giving Nature some genuine time off from our noisy human ways. Imagine an International Day of Human Silence for Nature...

2022.05.01 Dawn. Rural Pastoral Region. Autumn.

The main goal of my trip to Lorraine in the east of France was to record Common Midwife Toads. The location was an old disused quarry just outside Lérouville and knowing the toads begin calling after dusk, I arrived early to have time to scope out the location. I was immediately greeted by a group of very vocal Pool Frogs and Edible Frogs, their calls echoing around the quarry. I captured this recording much later that night, just after midnight.
