"It's Been A While" is a recomposition and rework of the song by Alev Lenz. I took the original a cappella melody and re-harmonized it for my felted Yamaha upright piano, Fender Rhodes, Prophet '08, and Juno-106.

"It's Been A While", a song originally written and performed by Alev Lenz in her album '3', re-composed and re-imagined for acoustic piano and sound design for SA Recording's "Recompose" competition.

This track was created for a competition hosted by SA Recordings and Alev Lenz.  The competition called for participants to recompose a track off of Alev Lenz's a cappella album "3" into a new piece of music.

The Runner (Recomposed by Salvador Lopez aka Cavalier) - Alev Lenz

This is a re-imagined version of "It's Been a While" from the album "3" by SA Recordings artist Alev Lenz.

The original is a capella, and since I can't sing my way out of a wet paper sack, I thought this may be a good reason to use a few of my favorite instruments: a baritone Telecaster, a cheap fretless electric guitar, and my new French horn. Since the original recording is a single voice, I kept things organic and didn't rely too heavily on sample-based instruments.

Like most projects, I wasn't entirely sure how this would turn out when I started, but when building a house from the roof down, there are bound to be surprises.

With the original "Fishermen" being all vocals (but with SO many with that "in the round" style!), I tried to go with an intense, but fun synthesizer approach. Thus, my "Synth Explosion" genre! I just tried to make something fun, but with a big sound. Many thanks to SA Recordings and especially Alev Lenz for putting her work out here for us artists to give it a go. I had a lot of fun creating my version of "Fishermen" - and I hope that comes across to those who take a listen. Thank you. #alevlenzrecompose

(Volume Up. Beginning is subtle.) This song is for the ReCompose contest by SA Recordings. The original version of “It’s Been a While” by Alev Lenz is a short, but bittersweet song. It’s very vulnerable and fragile, yet not broken. It’s just her voice. Honest and organic.
For my version of the song I didn’t want to use a bunch of synthetic sounding sounds. I wanted it to sound more breathy and real. My approach was to be minimal and not over-produced. The song opens with just the sound of the sustain pedal being pushed and the echo of that inside the piano (an old upright) fading to nothing before the melody begins. The horn section is to add that breath factor. There is a subtle, synthy sound echoing in the background just to add another texture. A few almost off notes dip down to represent the clashing of a distressed relationship, like the lyrics in the song: “It’s been a while since we have not fought.”  The piano quickly recovers to continue the main melody and move the song forward. There is also an upright bass to fill the bottom end. The first part ends with the release of the sustain pedal.
I wanted to add something orchestral at the end that started out very sparse, but built into a more complete and full moment. Some strings followed by a distant singer, a Harmochord (in the Accordion family of instruments), a glockenspiel, and some cymbals bring it to a close.
The song has a deconstructed feel with a light of hope. Kind of a reflection of the times we’re living in.

This is my re-imagine, recompose of Alev Lenz's Aimee Mann for the Spitfire Audio Recompose Competition.

I tried different versions with synths and different elements but ended up with this version, because at the heart, I felt this song is blues. 
I tracked this song with acoustic and electric guitars and electric bass over a beat I've manipulated kick and percussion sounds. First I tried to sing, but the the vocals on the original track were so perfect, I didn't use vocals. Instead I played the vocal melody with guitar. But I didn't want to leave the lyrics aside. And recently buying Anne Clark's vinyl from a local record store, inspired me to read the lyrics as a poem over the melody played by guitar. And this is the short story of how I recomposed this beautiful song.

I've reimagined Alev's take on her scenario with the runners.  In this instance instead of feeling inferior to the runners, this is a battle march! one vs the speeding oncoming crowd.  The one's anger and resilience far outmatching the superficial superiority of the many.

Alev Lenz is a is a German-Turkish singer, songwriter, composer and producer. Lenz's rich catalog of compositions fuse distinctive musical worlds into something that is authentically hers - compelling songs for both record and screen.

While working on material for her latest record '3', Alev composed her breakthrough track 'Fall Into Me' for Charlie Brooker's Netflix series 'Black Mirror'. Her s single 'May the Angels' from '3' featured on season two of critically-acclaimed Netflix series 'Dark'. 'Splendid Soldiers', Fall Into Me's album version, has also been featured on the third season of 'The Rain' (Netflix) while 'Pieces' of the same record has even been prominently featured twice on SKY's brand-new series 'Funeral For A Dog'.

'3' was released 2019 on the label arm of music tech company Spitfire Audio, SA Recordings, alongside a 20 patch Alev Lenz - '3' best selling and five star reviewed sample library, the first in the acclaimed music tech company whole new series of artist-led sample libraries.

Since 'Fall Into Me', her voice and writing have been in steady demand. Alev recently finished work on her debut feature film score, a commissioned piece for Grammy-award winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus and contributing vocals to Oscar nominated composer Volker Bertelmann's scores for the US-drama 'Downhill' and Netflix-blockbusters like 'The Old Guard', 'Stowaway' and 'Against The Ice'. Alev is frequently working in close collaboration with other artists, most famously with Martin Phipps who called her in to write the original song for "Black Mirror" and renowned sitarist and 7-time Grammy-Nominee Anoushka Shankar, with whom Alev co-wrote the title track for the Grammy-nominated album 'Land of Gold' as well as co-writing and co-producing Shankar's latest album 'Love Letters' - which culminated in three sold out shows with Shankar at London's Southbank Centre in December 2019 and a Grammy-nomination for the 63rd GRAMMY Awards in 2020. In 2021, on occasion of the gala concert at Krakow Film Music Festival, her composition for the Netflix-series Black Mirror was performed.
