Jay Reatard - Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle

In the punk-rock prime of his youth, Ryan Rousseau (aka Elvis Wong) saw himself cutting his teeth as the drummer for the Wongs, eventually hooking up with Jay Reatard to play in the Reatards, and dividing his time between the former band in Arizona and the latter in Memphis. Ryan soon recorded the first Destruction Unit 7”, a blistering slab of synth-punk, which eventually led Ryan to Tuscon’s drony, synth-heavy Digital Leather. Ryan in turn filled in from time to time on drums for Jay and Alix’s Angry Angles, and eventually found himself recording two more LPs under the Destruction Unit moniker with help from Jay and Alicja starting up the southwestern punk act Tokyo Electron, and exploring his more melodic, post-punk roots with Earthmen and Strangers. After the death of Jay Reatard in early 2010, Ryan resurrected Destruction Unit, this time emphasizing more psych/kraut/desert rock influences on their first LP, Eclipse, in FDH Records. For their second LP, Sonoran, due out in April from Volar Records, the group has almost completely stripped away whatever synth-punk leanings they were holding on to, creating a purely “desert-at-night” psych/kraut/space-rock album best enjoyed on the long nightly drives through the barren wastelands of the Southwest.

Upset the Rhythm and M’lady’s Records are very pleased to be teaming up for the first time to release the debut record from one of America’s most exciting groups today. VEXX, living in and playing out of Olympia, Washington, have been devastating the Pacific Northwest music hubs for the last year now. Their self-titled mini-album is explosive, vital, and many leagues deeper than it has any right to be in this wicked epoch.

Recorded by esteemed engineer, Dave Harvey (who also recorded both HYSTERICS 7”s issued on M’lady’s), this record originally came out in a small edition on the Grazer label late last year, which sold out instantly just through word of mouth. The very excellent Jason Ward (of Chicago Mastering Service) has since worked his magic re-mastering the recording, and now it’s even more wild and vibrant than ever. 

VEXX hit the ground running like punk hasn’t happened yet! Blazing through the first three songs on side one with a fury rarely seen in the modern underground. ‘Clairvoyant’ is equal parts jagged as inventive, twisting out of reach at all the right moments. The song captures the band perfectly, raging headlong with unmatched momentum. VEXX also know how to write a powerful slow burner, as evidenced by  ‘Strength’ and the first half of  ‘Ocean Shores’.  Maryjane’s lyrics and vocals are a clarion call of intent; on fire with possibility, whilst wrestling with the power of everything. She’s such a force of nature as a frontwoman that you’re left stunned as much as amazed. Meanwhile, Mike and Corey’s guitar and drum fireworks have left almost all spectators breathless (note: bass guitar duties on this recording were handled by Aaron, who has since been replaced by the very capable and excellent Ian). Each song is a maelstrom, whipping band and audience alike into a whirlwind. Pushing forward, thinking harder, striking home. 

This is also a first for us, in that Upset the Rhythm and M’lady’s will be co-releasing this mini-album (UTR handling distribution for the UK and Europe, and M’lady’s overseeing things in the USA).

Sauna Youth and Monotony are an evolving band of future humans making truly irregular punk, not quite comparable to anything else. 'Weird' is a meaningless platitude, and 'art punk' is a classifier that shouldn't be required. 

In the prelude to their album release, Sauna Youth have teamed up with themselves in the form of their sister band Monotony to send forth a colossal split 7” into the world on May 11th. Sauna Youth offer up their headrush lead single called ‘Transmitters’ from their forthcoming album, whilst Monotony proffer two exclusive tracks called ‘Human Troll’ and ‘Luxury Flats. 

Sauna Youth formed sister band Monotony, while writing their forthcoming album ‘Distractions’ in 2014. Later in the year, they did two sessions over two days as both bands for Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music, and both Sauna Youth and Monotony were invited to play DRILL Festival by Wire. As well as playing in Monotony, members of Sauna Youth are also in the bands Tense Men, Primitive Parts, Feature and Cold Pumas.

Consisting of Richard Phoenix, Lindsay Corstorphine, Jen Calleja and Christopher Murphy, Sauna Youth and Monotony are both punk bands that are happy to embrace all of the contradictions that go along with that notion. On paper both sound considered - live they can barely be contained. They are at times furious, unstoppable and severe with the sampler wailing like an alarm coming from a parallel universe – then chugging, poppy, harmonious and fun. Forever loud. As Kurt Cobain once asked "Why can't we be both Black Sabbath and The Beatles?" Sauna Youth consistently pose the question, “Why can't we be both The Ramones and Steve Reich?” Monotony prefer to keep things simpler and more direct and go straight for the jugular.
Sauna Youth’s side races off at full pelt, its guitars pulsing and chopping in a terse manner before the chorus crashes in like a wave. By singing every word at the same time, Ecke (Calleja) and Boon (Phoenix) create a unified voice of no specific gender, allowing the songs to be sung from multiple perspectives, from a place of shared experience. The song’s lyrics branch out of ideas of Transhumanism; looking for a way to live forever, for something that makes us last, like recordings – “I want my thoughts scratched into plastic/hear my voice on an endless loop/I like persistence” they sing in unison.

Monotony kick off their side of the 7” with ‘Luxury Flats’, a stomping slab of head-first primal punk. “Acquisitions, no ambition. Jumping off the balcony” they intone over the swaggering rhythm. In the song Monotony come face to face with Ballard’s high-rise nightmare set upon rapidly gentrifying London out of all reason. Second track, ‘Human Troll’ is a boldly brash song lodged with sloping riffs and hollered vocals. “Human Troll lives in the river, cement mattress making him shiver!” 
Upset the Rhythm will be releasing Sauna Youth’s long-awaited second LP Distractions on June 8th.

Since 2008’s ‘Wave Like Home’ debut album on Upset The Rhythm, Future Islands have gone from strength to strength, writing two classic albums of romantic yet melancholic synthpop for Thrill Jockey as well as exhaustively touring Europe and America to frenzied devotion. This new 7” on Upset The Rhythm ‘Tomorrow’ / ‘The Fountain’ sees the band at the top of their game, releasing some of their most compelling and sophisticated songs yet, building on the aching themes and poignant focus of their last album ‘On The Water’.

‘Tomorrow’ is a soulful swoon, its light tread is mesmerising amongst the slow burning synth cycles and relaxed bass progress. Samuel T. Herring’s ever-impressive vocal has never sounded more akin to Sam Cooke as he smoothly laments “I’m saying sorry every time we talk” before careening into a flight of sustained, arguably uncontrollable emotion. Some choice, additional vocals from Jenn Wasner (of Wye Oak), Lexie Mountain and Elena Johnston only make the song seem more impassioned; its ardent nature perfectly rendered into melody.

‘The Fountain’ meanwhile is a luscious narrative sunk into a slow dance. It’s a song that tells a tale of courtship, heady rush and leaps of faith. It’s a beautifully descriptive lyric, full of “shady groves”, “hanging gardens” and “human loam”, nodding a head to both Genet and Rilke as it passes. “I know my lines, and there’s a lot less space and a little bit of time… I know the way – It’s fine” sings Herring tenderly. Gerrit Welmers keyboard work here is stunning, the blooming chords and fluted air soaring across a landscape of crushed cymbals and quivering ambience, peaking with William Cashion’s deeply expressive, echoing bass ascent.

‘Tomorrow’ / ‘The Fountain’ was recorded and produced with long-term collaborator Chester Endersby Gwazda and mastered by Sarah Register (Talk Normal). Tyler Weeks provides the liminal, colourscape cover and the vinyl is heavyweight, white and limited to 1000 copies worldwide.
