This piece was broadcast in a BBC Radio 3 Live Lunchtime Concert for International Women's Day on 8th March 2018, following a nationwide call for scores, and was performed by Francisco Sanchez Diaz (soprano saxophone), Adam Hall (cello) and Monika Palsauskaite (piano) at the BBC Maida Vale Studios, London.

Delicate granite rock, crumbling apart in my hands (BBC Radio 3 Live Lunchtime Concert)

This piece was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 as part of the 'Seven Ages of Woman' project for International Women's Day 2020. It was performed by the BBC Singers, with conductor Grace Rossiter, at St Peters' Eaton Square on 27th February 2020 and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 8th March 2020.

I chose to set a poem by Welsh/Breton poet, Heather Dohollau. For me, Dohollau's statement that 'Since the body tends to rise to the surface of the water, one should resist and try and swim to the bottom' seems to embody female independence and also the need for challenge and to look at issues
deeply, especially in a modern culture which sometimes seems centred around superficial representation.
The poem I have set in this piece is called 'For Ilaria del Caretto' and it was inspired by the statue of Italian noblewoman, Ilaria del Caretto, who died at the age of 26, during childbirth in the 15th century. The idea of young woman in her 20s being in a state of 'eternal waking' resonated with me, especially in this age of technological advances.

A young woman sleeps
or, by fluke of the times,
faces down what's in store
the pantings of death and life
share that absolute face
and dictate a sweet repose
in an eternal waking
