Bradford Market

Spatial Drone is a synthesiser improvisation which excites the resonant frequencies of the Legroom space. This is an improvisation which aims to subject a stationary audience to a range of body-listening experiences by putting the room into contrasting resonant vibratory states. During this experience, the audience becomes explicitly bound to the space through vibration. The audience both hears and feels the materiality of the space. Performed at LEGROOM Manchester as pat of my Listening to Architecture residency on 22/11/2017.

In this game, people move around the space blindfolded and make contact with others by using the sounds of their voices and listening to the voices of others. In order to move, each individual must sing a single sustained pitch. They may only move as long as they are singing. It does not matter what the sung pitches are, just that they are within the comfortable singing range of each individual and that they are sustained for the duration of the time that any individual is moving for.

Astamae, translated from Arabic means ‘to listen attentively, to harken, or to pay attention’. These sound recordings are extracts of a an installation that was shown at the National Science and Media Museum as bat of 'Above the Noise. The work foregrounds listening as a practice that connects members of the Islamic faith. Drawing on the sonic experiences of a group of community members and a product of close collaboration with members of the Bradford Grand Mosque and local families, it guides the listener through elements of Bradford’s Islamic soundscape. It tracks devotional practices of sounding and listening – such as the Dhikr, recitation of the Quran, or Naaths – through the acoustic spaces within which they resonate: the mosque, the home and the car; and the technologies and media through which they propagate: azan radios, smartphone apps and live streams. Unfolding locally, on the level of the diaspora, and in relation to global centres of Islam, this sounding collage of acoustic spaces, technological media, and demographics is drawn together by common practices of sounding and listening.

For Someone Who Has Never Performed a Resonance draws attention to how architectural spaces shape the voices within them. In this sonic intervention, singers conduct improvisations in four locations within the RA in which — through a process of sounding and listening — they tune their voices towards the resonant properties of each of these architectural locations. Through this act, each singer turns the usually implicit relationality between voice and space into an active interrogation: an aural meditation on the architectural environment. These improvisations are recorded, arranged, and played back into each of the spaces in which they were conducted via loudspeakers. Visitors are able to listen to the acoustic characters of these spaces as revealed by the singers.
