In the past I've shown people my dance and video production side...but there's one more piece to my artistic expression...and that is music production. Happy to have completed my first instrumental...I'll now continue to move forward and better my craft in the mix of movement, music and visuals.

...But back to music production.

This is my first ever fully produced instrumental. I learned a lot from this mix, it holds a special place in my heart. It was amazing taking this all the way through production and learning new things along the way. I'm excited to continuing growing as an artist.

The track itself is atmospheric and is influenced by synthpop, electronica & ambient style hip-hop beats. I created this instrumental with the mindset of someone rapping over the verse parts and singing over the chorus. So there's a contrasting elements of hip-hop and electronica. It makes for a interesting listen with various soundscapes and sounds together in the mix.

The Voice That Got To Flow instrumental is a hip-hop beat with a catchy verse and interesting chorus. Using unique vocals sounds and some nice 808 kicks.

This beat came about in session where I was exploring and experimenting with vocal sounds. I was looking for a bit of eerie yet smoothly interesting vocal sound. I also wanted this beat to have a hip hop feel, so I added a 808 kick and then went about incorporating a snare that I felt had a hip hop feel. What the session ended up resulting in was me creating a minimalistic yet catchy beat with some good bass and chorus that'll catch you by surprise; it's something a rapper could flow on.

I had this chord progression in the pocket for some time, it had a nice feel and knew I wanted to craft a beat around it.  I waited till I had time to come up with right sound for the progression that would fit the feel I wanted for Mellow Vibes . From the get go I wanted the instrumental/beat to sound atmospheric and mellow. I wanted Mellow Vibes to sooth and relax. When I got the overall tone I wanted, the rest came easy. It was just a matter of adding sounds that complemented the established feel I was going for. I enjoyed adding the harmonies, kicks and percussion that brought this piece together.

The Mellow Vibes instrumental/beat produced by Alex Gomes is a new soothing ambient r&b/hip-hop beat. The instrumental/beat has a big smooth filmic sound.

The instrumental "That Speaks To Us" came about from me redesigning samples from three songs; I asked someone what their favorite songs were at the moment, and in particular telling them to choose the three favorites with the production in mind. When She told me the three songs she chose; I then listened to them closely for a couple of days and pulled some samples from the songs. Figuring out what key and tempo I would produce this piece in and what samples I would use along with my own instruments and sounds.

I wanted most of the samples to sound different to give the instrumental its own sonic character. I tuned and then tweaked the samples just a tad to make them unique to this piece. Besides the one sample that will be instantly recognizable, the rest would take some thinking. But it's ok I'll add the sample credits and further production notes at the end of this post, but listen to the piece first before, to see if you recognize some the sounds without me telling you.

At first I had a little trouble figuring out not only how to mix together the various samples but also mixing those sounds with my own sounds. Though once you get in the groove and do what it feels right, it all comes together beautifully.

Once I laid out the foundation and song structure, I looked to add fills to spice it up and add sonic variety.

I was in love with this instrumental when the full composition was done going into the first few days of mixing. It had a warm chilling vibe that evolves and progresses as the song goes on.

I learned that sometimes it doesn't take that long for a piece to feel complete, I bounced back from a lot different ideas, but you have to go with your gut and not force any changes that doesn't serve the message and feel of the song, and I'm happy for the experience producing this beat and what I learned from it.

Additional Details:

“Dreams Money Can Buy” came out a while ago and is one of my favorite songs by Drake (with production by 40) its lyrics and sonic quality are inspiring and uplifting. Though it wasn’t chosen out of three songs, there was a sound in the song that I knew would fit perfectly with the instrumental. 

“Girl with the Tattoo” which was sampled by one of the chosen songs also wasn’t of the three but it was a lot cleaner getting the sample from the original song (Miguel’s vocal work on this piece are out of this world by the way) rather than from PartyNextDoor’s song, though I loved what he did with the sample. 

The third song was “Persian Rugs” along with “Break From Toronto” By PartyNextdoor; while not sampled, was though looked to for reference and inspiration to makes sure the instrumental had the sound of those songs and of course also of “Cameras”.

The instrumental “You’re Riding With A Young Legend” is a follow-up to the idea of creating a beat based off musical taste and favorite songs or in this case song because this time I asked someone for one song and they told me one song and the samples from the song they wanted to me use to create something new with my sonic library and skills I have.

So this time around continuing on the modern sample production practices, I took a tiny bit of direction and feedback further expanding on the collaboration that goes on in producing music; which is something I want to continue to do and dive deeper into. Collaboration is the heart of what I want WGP to become.

So yes along with the song the person gave, I added two more songs to grab a sample and take cues from some of the sonic characteristics of the track; a concept I call the three song fusion technique. With one sample being a foundation and the following either harmonizing with it or adding fills to the track.

I’m getting better and better with each production. I’m finding ways of doing things my own way to develop my sound and techniques along with added versatility and the openness to experimentation and push forward the culture of sound and music. I look forward to the next production. This brings the instrumental count to 8 and once I reach 10; I will be looking to collaborate with vocal artists. The next instrumental I produce will not be sample focused; I’ve used the sample style production and now have a great grasp on how to use that style of production if needed or if I want to. I want to return to using more original sounds and also want to do a track with that is acoustically focused. It’s exciting to learn different production techniques. It’s all the part of the process to learn, grow, and improve my artistry while also making great music. Two more instrumentals to go then we move on to collaborations that create songs.

 Additional Notes:

This song has bigger dynamic range then my previous works; it is of course mainly due to the kicks. I learned a lot about gain staging, balancing, punch in a track, and mixing and mastering. I loved the feel I got from the kicks hitting hard along with bass when it drops and changes notes. Though with that said, I’m grateful for lesson it taught me about peaks, clarity, EQ and dynamic range. I could have squashed the kicks and bass to get a louder sound but I love the feel and sound of the middle ground I was able to find as I did make it clearer and louder in the mastering stage than what I started with when I finished the mix. All in all I love the lessons I learned when taking this piece through the production process and hearing it on different systems. Looking forward to the next instrumental I produce as move towards the ten mark goal and thus begin to work with vocalists.

The "Vintage Soul" instrumental was built around a certain theme and sound, being the whole idea of vintage and contrasting it with modern and new age sounds. It is influenced by film scores, edm, neo soul and electronica. I experimented more than usual in this piece and felt my self grow as an producer and artist.

The idea evolved and progressed as the arrangement was improved upon. I paralleled the concept of vintage; using vinyl/tape noise and warmth with with the time; clock percussion and a reverse piano with also modern techniques; sound sculptuing effects and new age sounds. So the whole idea of vintage meets modern meets the future. At our core we want to be timeless but we want want part of ourselves to be in tune of what's happening in the world around us and we also want to set trends and be ahead of our time. That's what the concept of this instrumental was inspired by; our soul being in tune with different wavelengths or time-lengths if you will. Remember timelessness is the foundation, modern is the flare and future is the style. Time tells all and time is a wonderfully interesting topic to think about.

The “You Get What You Give” instrumental evolved a bit from its original inception. It came about from a lush warm synth sound and the certain rhythm it had in a chord progression parallel to another smooth synth sound in a slightly different chord progression. Then going on to bring in some choice samples here there before having it climax towards the end with some cool arrangement choices to bring it all together. I felt a ton of growth finishing up this track.

I’ll be including this music idea in a full length project. The line “trust me you get what you give” drove the vibe and inspired some cool sound choices. I reached the goal of creating 10 instrumentals. I told myself after that I reached that number I would feel at one with the production process and I would start contributing to full length projects, loose tracks and thus tracks with the full works that included the lyrics and vocal performance, and collaborations (other artists included).

Looking forward to putting out more sounds. I experimented a little with a full concept on this track with a hint of chorus with vocal sounds by musical artists Drake and Laurent, but the space in this track is left open for the artist. The next instrumental you might hear before you see a full on song released, might just be a track with a full chorus performances and open verses; to play with that part of production on a track or maybe I might just go ahead and put out a full song; we’ll see.

I know I’m passionate about taking my growth with production further and forming stories with not only composition and arrangement but also vocalists and song writing now. And I’m glad I reached that instrumental goal, I was close to going all in this track with vocals, so I guess now is the time to further the exploration. But now I understand where a vocal fits in the spectrum, So I feel confident I can create beats for an artist to hop on, Instrumental only tracks, beats with a concept behind for a hook/ chorus, and now we’ll see how I do with full songs. Additional Notes: In terms of full on mastering I was judicious with it this time around  because I want to have other people start mastering and also some touches on mixing on tracks until WGP gets an in house engineering. I know some engineering and like to touch up tracks with some mixing because I feel that contributes a lot to the sound and vision (I'm a producer/artist) but as of now I take tracks through the full mixing/mastering process and look forward to having some help in that area on my and collaborators and projects.

Developing Ideas

The "Moments In Joy" instrumental is a beat that had some memorable stages of evolutions and new ideas. It was amazing experience to make and I can say that I felt a bigger growth than previous productions on this sound piece. It was about finding the sound and pocket and how it related to the full arrangement.
The original beat looked a lot different from the final sound and it wasn't so much that I didn't like the prior sound..I just felt it was not at a certain level or evocative sound scape I wanted. When I added a new sound and chord progression the vision where the beat would go made sense. And that happens sometimes, you'll add a certain sound and it'll be a vital part to pushing the sound further; a real game changer.

(Side note: listen to the instrumental before reading the blog post and production notes on the piece. It makes for a better experience for the ride the music takes you; it's the same with films

Furthering The Arrangement and Vocal Sessions

From there the chorus parts came and I had Laurent who added vocal layers for the "You Get What Give" beat; add some layers to this piece as well. Laurent also introduced to Shantel Biston; a singer from NY who laid some vocal parts as well and took some of the lyrics writing I have in mind for this beat and filpped a little for a bridge part. The vocal instrument session were a dope time of just feeling things out and seeing where it goes. The ending arrangement idea came from when I posted a snippet of the beat in the pre-mixing stage on snapchat and I was swiping through filters and landed on the slow mo filter and I wasn't sure what to think at first, at first but after replaying I was like this sounds cool and transformed the vibe to a new place. That's the crazy you can stumble across ideas in the sound world in unexpected ways.

Moments In Joy

I remember being up till dawn at 7:00am morning doing the initial sound session and feeling a great joy of wow!..I like where this going. Making the melody progression and then added sound design choices. To then later revisit the beat months later and rearrange certain parts and add the culminating instrument to the piece was an amazing moment. These experiences creating art bring me closer to who I am and how I connect people through what I do as a creative producer of visuals, sound and movement. The lyrics for the piece relate to the title from different an experience, but the memories creating this instrumental relate all to well. Those are the best moments, the one's you remember..that you can almost bring yourself back to that moment in joy and smile and look forward to the next moments like that ahead.
