Lux a Duo

Symphony Nº2 is, abstractly speaking, Hemofiction in one single movement with a solid orchestration endowed with a powerful internal energy. The music has its roots in one of my older chambers works based on the novel “The Vampyre” by John Polidori. I have launched myself in search of unusual sonorities making several very worthy inner discoveries along the way, having as a result a second symphony, a powerful work with clear dramatic profiles where the piano takes the main role. 
Symphony Nº2 was premiered in 2012 by the Philharmonic of Mexico City as part of the festival Foro internacional de música nueva “Manuel Enríquez”. I am presenting the revision from 2021, a perfect example of the orchestral sound of MúsicaHemoficción.

Premier in 2009 as a part of the festival “Red Sound” at De Doelen Expohall in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
And in June 2009 at the Gaya-Hellene de la Societe Generale in Paris, France.

Trio Ritmato 1

Trombone concerto and ensemble (rev. 2023) was finalist of 2023 Call for Scores of Lowell Chamber Orchestra on its third composition competition.

Commissioned and premiered by trombonist Faustino Diaz and the Ensemble Instrumenta at the “Instrumenta Oaxaca verano”, conducted by Jose Luis Castillo as part of the closing of the festival in the theater Macedonio Alcala in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Trombone Concerto

Piece for Flute, Clarinet, Percussion, Guitar, Piano, and Double Bass.

Inspired by Franco Donatoni’s philosophy that any articulated material can serve as the basis for new music, Septeto was born from his piece Nidi and is dedicated to his memory. In Nidi, Donatoni uses three notes, from which I derived three fundamental chords. I then took the first 18 figures of the original work and reinterpreted them, creating a new articulation of the material.

This process of treating and reshaping the material resulted in new accents, gestures, and figures, offering an almost unlimited range of possibilities. A key aspect of my approach was assigning a distinct color to each chord, with the guitar playing a central role—almost as a soloist—in shaping the piece's character.

The composition is based on three specific pitches and the first 18 figures from Donatoni’s Nidi. By reimagining these pitches and figures, I generated three distinct chords and developed new rhythmic interpretations of the original material. What began as a miniature evolved into a fully developed work, nearly 10 minutes in length.

Septeto consists of seven sections, all unified by rhythm, the primary driving force of the piece, and the prominent role of the guitar, which serves as the centerpiece of the ensemble.

Septeto in memoriam Franco Donatoni

Partita is a piece for solo violin in three movements, representing the past, present, and future—three distinct narratives connected by the hierarchical presence of a single pitch. This unifying tone weaves through the piece, accompanied by the characteristic folkloric elements intrinsic to Alex’s musical language, particularly prominent in the third movement.

Partita for solo violin - 3rd movement

Diana cazó cabeza en el circo is an orchestral suite inspired by the play Diana cazadora de cabezas by Juan Trigos S. Conceived with a cyclical structure, the work is built from chords derived from the octatonic scale, enriched with external notes that introduce tension, contrast, and a distinct expressive quality. Its musical language moves fluidly between diatonic and chromatic fields, using transpositions that intensify harmonic roughness and create a continuous, ever-evolving rhythmic and harmonic flow.

The piece stands out for its technical clarity and for the incorporation of controlled aleatoric elements that reinforce its internal cohesion. On an evocative level, the music resonates abstractly with the figure of Diana and her imaginary flying heads, exploring themes such as lineage, family, self-destruction, and horror. These ideas take shape through a dynamic interaction between musical gesture and choreographic energy, inviting the listener into a space of reflection and inner discovery.

Dedicated to Olga Shevchenko, Diana cazó cabeza en el circo received third prize in the First Morelia Orchestral Composition Competition and was premiered in 2025 by the Symphony Orchestra of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (OSUANL), conducted by Maestro Eduardo Díazmuñoz.

Cuarteto de Cuerdas No 1

Rather than quoting Hispanic American folklore directly, Alex allows its echoes to resonate abstractly, shaping his unique sonic language. Central to his artistic vision is Hemofiction, the literary aesthetic developed by Juan Trigos S., which inspired Jiménez Ruanova to create MúsicaHemoficción, his own musical interpretation of the genre.

His music has been performed by leading ensembles and orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, OSEM, ASKO|Schoenberg Ensemble (Netherlands), Onix Ensamble (Mexico), Duo Luxa (Germany), and triO+ (France). His works have featured in international festivals such as the Festival Internacional Cervantino, Foro Internacional de Música Nueva “Manuel Enríquez,” and Dni Muzyki Kompozytorów Krakowskich (Poland).

He has received numerous awards, including Second Prize in the 2025 Art & Violence Composition Competition (The Secret Drawer), and Third Prize in the Primer Concurso de Composición Orquestal de Morelia (Five Pieces for Orchestra). He has also been a finalist or semifinalist in competitions in the U.S., Mexico, and Europe.

Jiménez Ruanova holds a Master’s degree from Codarts (Rotterdam), where he studied with Klaas de Vries, and has participated in masterclasses with composers such as Steve Reich and Brian Ferneyhough. He has held residencies at the Camargo Foundation and Dora Maar House in France. He is a member of ASCAP and publishes with PromoMusica International and soon in Universal Edition.
