Fields Of Our Hearts

It was in 1542 when Portuguese sailors, on route to Japan, stumbled upon an island not plotted on their maps. As their fleet approached, the sailors beheld vast mountains, cloaked in dense green forest. The cry that went up on board became the island’s name: “Ilha Formosa!” – beautiful island. 
Today, one can easily understand the sailors’ reaction when gazing at the island’s resplendent coastline. Ilha Formosa is now called Taiwan.

This piece is for solo piano and a pre-recorded tape cassette. It explores the relationship between the gradually changing presences of two sounds. It was written for and premiered by Rachael Ueckermann.
