In the days when we were radicals

I might as well be blind
Because I can’t see through the stage lights.
I only know you’re there from the sheer lack of your applause.
Because my song is uninspired,
Not too deep, a bit oblique,
Lacking in perception
Or a wry laconic twist.

The rhyme scheme is a little weak
The rhythm is unsure
The melody could use a tweak
And it’s mostly “borrowed,” so to speak.

If I had something to say
I’d make an effort to refine it.
I could pretend I’m wallowing in waves of schadenfreude.
But I can barely say that word,
Let alone define it.
You’d think by now my intellect would have some force behind it.
But that thought brings me ‘round to other thoughts I should avoid.

Like how I’m working 40 years to fund my final ten
And instead of helping orphans, I’m at this open mic again.

But let me say at this point
I’m not prone to introspection;
Men my age would rather wage
a war of self-deception.
Some guys get a motor bike
A sports car or a trophy wife.
I got a ukulele as my object of affection.

This song is almost over 
And I’ve still said nothing new.
Maybe 58’s too late to be a folk song ingénue.
But here’s a little secret I’ve been keeping for some time:
I’m really 57 but it didn’t fit the line.
I know these lyrics make no sense
But let me say in my defense
Who needs a good reason
when I have a decent rhyme?
Now this song is over; I thank you for your time.
