Filmed over the course of a year at a High School in South Carolina, ‘American High School: Straight Outta Orangeburg’ is a landmark six-part series for BBC3 that follows a charismatic principal and his students, including star football players, Ivy League hopefuls, male cheerleaders and young mothers as they prepare for the next step in life.

The series reveals life through the eyes of young African-Americans, from Homecoming to graduation; from dates at the diner to senior Prom, and captures life-changing moments on the journey to adulthood. This is a High School as you’ve never seen it before, and a unique insight into how it really feels to be young and black in America today.

Grayson Perry’s Dream House charts the creation of Grayson’s riskiest and most personal public artwork of his career: a loving tribute and celebration of his homeland of Essex inspired by his life and the people he grew up amongst. This is his tribute to Essex Women in all their glory and a powerful challenge to the reductive myth of the ‘Essex Girl.’

It is also Grayson’s biggest project to date, a creative collaboration with Charles Holland of FAT Architecture, that also involves a team of engineers, builders and crafts people. It’s taken three years to build and has involved hundreds of man-hours.

This First Cut documentary from director Marcus Plowright allows unprecedented insight into the clandestine gay Asian or ‘Gaysian’ community in the UK which provides a haven for young men who are unable to publically reconcile their sexuality with their cultural identity and traditions. Homosexuality is widely deemed to be forbidden within Islam and the exhibitionist nature of drag remains one of the ultimate taboos for many British Asians – forcing the entire scene underground. This sensitively-made film focusses on the stories of three of the 100-150 Muslim Drag Queens who face the seemingly insurmountable challenge of gaining acceptance and tolerance within their own wider communities.

In the US, life chances for students who graduate high school are often starkly different to those who don’t, a disparity even more marked for African-American pupils.

A selection of my cues from the 90-minute feature-length documentary In Cold Blood, for ITV's Bafta-winning Exposure strand 

The film examines the biggest treatment disaster in NHS history. In the 1970s, a new treatment for haemophilia known as Factor VIII was prescribed on the NHS. It infected over 1,300 people with HIV and more than 4,000 people with Hepatitis C. 
 
In the same week the long public inquiry looking into this scandal re-opens, In Cold Blood offers a window into a tragedy which killed more people than Grenfell, Hillsborough, 7/7 and the Birmingham bombings combined. Yet its scale and impact has until now been relatively understated in Britain.
 
With access to hundreds of previously unexamined documents from inside the government, In Cold Blood  explores the full story behind the scandal, and investigates claims that warnings were systematically ignored and subsequently covered up. In the wake of Covid-19, this landmark film tells some shocking truths about our Health Service’s past - at a time when, perhaps more than ever, we are looking for it to function properly.

Alexander Parsons is a musician and composer based in London. He has composed original scores to many BAFTA and RTS-winning films, with credits found regularly on television productions on most of the major broadcasting channels. He also plays the electric violin and modular synthesiser as part of Miro Shot, who have undertaken residencies across Europe and are currently touring their multi-sensory live show, CONTENT. They are currently working on a debut album, signed to Believe and published by Warp. Alexander has been a member of the jury for the BAFTA craft awards.
