1988 The History of House Music

The Hot Mix 5 are an American DJ team originating from Chicago, Illinois, who were chosen by WBMX Program Director, Lee Michaels in 1981. The founding members were Farley "Funkin" Keith (later known as Farley "Jackmaster" Funk), Mickey "Mixin" Oliver, Scott "Smokin" Silz, Ralphi Rosario and Kenny "Jammin" Jason. In 1982, Scott Silz was asked to leave the group and was replaced by Julian "Jumpin" Perez in 1984, as the winner of a HMF sponsored DJ Battle. Another DJ, Jeff Davis, was supposed to be a sixth member, but Silz mentioned in an interview that he never showed up, leaving just the five members.[1]

Created to act as the resident DJs on Chicago FM radio station (now defunct) WBMX's Saturday Night Live Ain't No Jive mix show hosted by Armando Rivera, the members quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Soon Friday Night Jams, Mini Mixes and specially edited remixes were added. The Chicago house music scene exploded as the Hot Mix 5 show and WBMX became the #1 Radio show in Chicago, by airing a new sound called House Music that was presented by their unique style of turntablism. Mickey Oliver became known by his editing and Turntable skills, and Farley, Ralphi and Kenny each had their own incredible unique styles. Soon the Hot Mix 5 Radio show became known all over the world as their mixes were recorded on cassette tapes and sent across America and aboard. Their Turntable skills together with this new genre broke about every Chicago House Music Record and many Italo Disco track, as Million of listeners in Chicago waited for their weekly mixes. Together, the've became legends as their mixes are still being sold today on the likes of Ebay and other outlets. Many of the Top Djs in the world have recognized the Hot Mix 5 as their mentors, as to setting the bar of what a DJ can be.

The City of Chicago, Illinois recognized the Hot Mix 5 members contribution to the creation of the house music genre and honored them by presenting each member with an individual street named after them and in addition a street named after them as a whole called "Hot Mix 5 Way", which is located in downtown Chicago on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Balbo Drive. 

Today, The Hot Mix 5 members continue to perform globally individually and sometimes as a team. 
Mickey has had a TV show called Intensi-T, a live stage show at the Planet Hollywood complex on the Las Vegas Strip, and mentioned as a Grammy semi finalist in 2012. Ralphi was a Grammy finalist in 2013 and has produced recordings for many Major recording artists with countless charting hits. Farley has continued his legendary DJ career by performing all over the world to huge crowds. Kenny's Addicted to Radio station has been nominated as one of America's top Radio stations.

Belgian New Beat and trance influenced tracks by Betonkust, Innershades, Robert D and Deris. ‘Familly Matters Vol.1 is a 5 track EP that counts as the start of a new series on the 9300 Records imprint. It’s the proper result of combined forces by these trusted beat suppliers and freshman ‘Deris’. Each of them delivered their own personal homage to the thriving Belgian nightlife in the late 80's and 90’s, when clubs like Boccaccio and later Zillion acquired an almost legendary status. To this day, their iconic neon-signs are still etched in our collective memory. In a decade where serious scandals, that even involved bribery, lead to heavy political disputes and a huge health-crisis (the Dioxine crisis) predominated Belgian media, people were searching for a way to escape reality and these clubs helped them to leave this world behind through music and entertainment. At the end of 1999, a point of no return was reached for the federal government, but a musical legacy was built…

V.A. - Family Matters Vol. 1 Previews

Meo, pseudonym of Daniele Mei, is a cosmic dj from Rimini, Italy. Fine Corsa was his first record, released in 1985. In those days Meo was active in what was later considered to be the most famous Afro Dance Club in Italy: Melody Mecca. This release is an intensely creative hybrid of many styles and many colors. Even up until the present day this record continues to be very important in some preeminent European clubs. Now remastered by Brandenburg.

Recorded in an ageing holiday park during off-season, Center Parcs is the debut LP by Dutch artists Betonkust & Palmbomen II; a conceptual, musical-tristesse full of lo-fi harmony, and fanciful, psychedelic-coloured modulations, with an undercurrent of saturated, outsider-house beats, all recorded to tape. With a shared passion for experimental music, and gnarled Dutch electro, the duo have crafted an LP of esoteric-electronic-pop, reflective of the time the two spent holed-up in isolation, in the out-of-time Center Parcs setting. 

Palmbomen II a.k.a. Kai Hugo, is the electronic-focused, alter-ego of Palmbomen. Existing in his secondary iteration, Palmbomen II gained notoriety for his alternative, warped style, having released two LPs, both receiving critical acclaim. Originally from the Netherlands and now living in Los Angeles, his musical relationship with Betonkust stretches back several years, leading to a unique live, and studio-working symbiosis. Meanwhile Betonkust — hailing from the westerly Dutch shores — has been notching up kudos points with his Detroit-like analogue sound. Having found their studio-synchronicity, the duo have already notched up a couple of select EP releases, plus a featured track on Dekmantel’s 10 year anniversary series.

“It’s a weird environment, but we like it,” Palmbomen II says about Center Parcs, where the album was recorded. Originally built in the 70s, Center Parcs De Eemhof in Zeewolde provides a pseudo-tropical environment for vacationing families, with an ageing, ersatz jungle; its faux decor gradually fading to grey. Recorded during the winter, the two Dutch men took-up home in one the park’s chalets with select hardware — predominately synths and drum machines — and recorded all of their progress to tape. Being the only occupants in the melancholic, somber settings, the duo made an LP that was reflective of the unpretentious surroundings. “Some people think it’s ironic, but this is not a tongue-in-cheek joke,” Hugo says about the record. “There’s sadness here that people try not to hide.” 

Everything on Center Parcs was recorded on hardware, in the moment; “real jams” as the guys describe them. No computers. It was through this in-the-present-process that led to the recondite, lo-fi shoegaze record, reflective of their shared influences — from the likes of I-F. through to Cocteau Twins. Opener ’24x33’, has a reverberated VHS aesthetic; 'De rust die je zocht' ('The peace you were looking for') sounds like an angelic score to a forgotten family game show; 'Nintendo Pantera' a solemn, upbeat Detroit-retroffited-vapourware melody. The album is a follow up to the Center Parcs EP - the producer’s debut cassette release on Canadian label 1080p in 2016. This will be the first time that these tracks have been made widely available, and on vinyl release, and is seen by both artists as a chance to expand on the moment that they captured together - to share the beautiful-tristesse with all.

'To Leave This World Behind' is much more optimistic in terms of sound palette than its title may suggest. No despair or regretful sighs on the horizon, but Betonkust's gleaming synth arrangements and subtle touch of Sino-friendly faded melancholy here tied to a steady propulsive groove.
