His music was influential to many and has been played on Solid Steel ever since the show started. We look at his early work from the 70’s with classics ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ and ‘Home Is Where the Hatred Is’ right up to his latest album ‘I’m new here’ from last year and ending on the full 13 min live version of ‘The Bottle’.

Solid Steel Radio Show 3/6/2011 Part 3 + 4 - DK - Gil Scott-Heron tribute mix

Solid Steel (26th December) The votes have been counted and the listeners choice of Solid Steel 'Mix of the Year 2014' goes to Clap! Clap!, with runners up Maribou State, Catching Flies and Matt Berry. Congratulations to Aanand Davé, who was the lucky winner of the Ninja Tune prize and here once again are the most popular mixes.

We start with Clap! Clap! from March and this mix showcases his musical style of researching and sampling tribes, bands and singers originating from the African continent with unreleased tracks, collaborations and remixes. Plus there's music from Italian film score legend Piero Umiliani, H-Sik, Debruit, DJ Earl and new Ninja Tune signing, Romare.
Maribou State also appeared in March with a beautiful mix and although no tracklist at the time, listeners soon worked out that it featured Andrew Ashong, Bibio, Jungle, Four Tet remix of Grimes and Maribou State confirmed that it included one of their unreleased tracks.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
