here comes a very personal plea, which is not meant to be personal at all:

don't make AI a tool for deception, fraud, and fake. 

that's massively unfair to all the artists who invest 1000 times more effort, time, and talent in their work to earn respect and get paid on platforms like spotify & co. and it's disrespectful to every listener who celebrates you for something that wasn't created or performed by you but by a machine: whether music or lyrics or images or all of the above.

over 20% of all music uploaded to spotify and others is now AI-generated, and this figure is rising rapidly. that's fine, as long as it is clearly marked. but I doubt anyone will be willing to pay even a penny for music in the future without clear indication of whether it came from a machine at the touch of a button.

there are plenty of free AI detectors on the internet that anyone can use to check in seconds whether a song is AI-generated. but do we really need these control devices and an 'authenticity police force' that only fuels mutual mistrust? way better:

stop cheating! be honest with people. be honest with yourself.

being transparent about your use of AI makes you much greater than AI will ever make you – greater than the illusory bubble with which you try to shine on the social media stage, like wearing a superman/wonder woman costume at carnival until you start believing you really are wonder woman/superman.

just as synths, rhythm machines, samplers, digital recording technologies, and stuff, once did, AI is opening up entirely new possibilities for creativity. it’s up to you to make it an art form, or just artificial.

I am at an age where “back then” is really a long time ago. an intangible eternity. a period of time that was beyond abstract when I was in my mid-20s and understood the future to mean the next 5 years. interestingly, I also had a very different understanding of the past. even my youth, just a few years ago, felt far away – comparable to the phenomenon that music was called an "oldie" if it was more than 10 years old (probably due to music was developing way more rapidly at that time and was constantly coming up with something innovative, surprising, and completely new). 

during this time, I met my wife, carina. we had both been through extremely chaotic first relationships. with all the wild excesses that go with them: massive parties, any kind of drugs, crazy trips, the entire range of juvenile madness, intense emotional ups and downs, and both paths with a really nasty ending.

in our early days, we loved spending nights telling each other about it, preferably in my band's rehearsal room, where we often spontaneously made music out of our experiences.

this resulted in, among other songs, a piece with the plain hook “looking back at you, looking back at me, looking back and all I see’s absurdity” and a super simple chord progression of Fism/D/E/Bm, which repeated itself the whole time without any variation. 

we could sing all sorts of different things to it, and it always worked and sounded funny. I kept coming back to the subject with countless recordings (as I did to many others). until today, more than 40 years later, in a future that was unimaginable back then and that held experiences for us that made our retrospective view of that time seem like a piece of cake.

now, after all, I combined some text fragments from '83 with new lines, made them a little more english (hope so) and briefed my virtual singer along with a playback. 

you can't imagine how it feels for us to hear this song interpreted like this today, on our 41st wedding anniversary this weekend. or maybe you can. and will smile.

even at the risk of annoying you by constantly harping on about how incredibly stupid and uninhibitedly destructive we humans are towards our planet and all life around us, here is another piece of work. 

I wrote the original 12 years ago after a rainy walk around hamburg's alster lake (just google it and see how beautiful this place in the middle of the city is). me and carina, we enjoyed the unique atmosphere, gazed at the sky with its colossal cloud formations and 1000 shades of blue and grey, the diverse play of colours and textures created by the millions of raindrops, the rainfilled leafy branches of the trees, the bushes, the grasses...

while seeing and hearing and smelling and feeling all these unparalleled wonders, roy batty's iconic monologue from the film blade runner came to our mind: ‘I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. attack ships on fire off the shoulder of orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the tannhäuser gate. all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. time to die’.

we concluded that we also have some very nice motifs on earth.

at that time, there were still a few hopeful signs that humanity would manage to preserve all these magnificent phenomena on our planet and courageously commit to a future worth living.

Alex Ingram has a BA in Sculpture from Glasgow School of Art and a MA in Fine Art from Saint Martins School of Art and Design.
A Matter Artist, he uses photography, video, poetry and painting and is interested in the ideas of “Nothing”, tactile interaction and the physical nature of thought. As a continuing process the pieces he makes are moments along the journey with meaning being a fluid commodity.

Alex has exhibited his work both in Britain and abroad in galleries, festivals and as site specific work. He has also published four books and completed three.
