Quaraçá (2022)

This piece is the culmination of a collaboration with biologist Professor C. Loren Buck from Northern Arizona University. Together, our goal was to musically depict the annual cycle of arctic ground squirrels, remarkable creatures that hibernate for over half a year with body temperatures below freezing. Through this composition, we endeavor to encapsulate the essence of their existence and shed light on the growing threats they face due to global climate warming.

In Extremis

Today we live on a planet that is changing fast so drastically that it is becoming more and more challenging to connect with nature. Most of our lives boil down to city life, with a nearby park as the only connection point with nature. Sometimes, however, we still get a chance to see stars in a clear night sky or listen to the twittering of birds while walking in the woods.

The following composition takes its inspiration from all the above; From birdsong, fleeting moments of synchronicity with nature, and the ever-growing dichotomy between nature and humanity. 

Birdsong are particularly important in this piece; In all the soloistic passages, most musical ideas come from the songs of a common nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos) and a Kaua'i 'o'o (Moho braccatus). Their songs were adapted to blend in with the musical context in which they appear, but they have remained unchanged in structure and gesture.

Reflections, Second Movement

Decibel 271 is the second collaborative project between scientist C. Loren Buck and composer Alexander Liebermann. The composition aims to structurally portray the life of a female bowhead whale, from her birth in 1754 to her death in 2025—reaching the remarkable age of 271, one year older than the projected bowhead whale.

Each measure in the piece corresponds to a single year in the whale’s life, with each measure lasting just over one second. The work is divided into distinct sections, reflecting key phases of the whale’s biological development.

De Poeta is the title of the Wessobrunn Prayer, sometimes called the Wessobrunn Creation Poem (German: Wessobrunner Gebet, Wessobrunner Schöpfungsgedicht). Believed to date from 790, it is among the earliest known poetic works in Old High German.
