I call this a little Christmas miracle because between babies in the background, recording equipment messing up, everyone fighting colds, and just the normal holiday chaos... it's a miracle we were able to get anything recorded! I didn't plan on sharing this (it was actually a gift for my Mom for Christmas) but I just felt like I should. My brother Jonathan and I have not recorded anything since high school and his wife Lacey and I have never recorded together. So I'm pretty happy that we were able to do this! Besides virtually all of the major artists from the 80s and 90s, Tutko worked on six records with Rod Stewart and Jim Creagan on six records. While Tutko was in the hospital and unconscious due to cancer, Rod and Jim left this message on his voice mail, which when played helped bring Tutko back out of an unconscious state for a bit longer before passing from one world to the next. The voicemail may constitute a short summary reflection of with his time this side in terms of vibe. Cheers to Tutko.

Everybody's Talkin'

This song was the reason I decided that I needed to find back up singers. I wrote it in a cabin in western New York . I’ve stayed in that cabin several times while on tour heading towards or away from NYC. It belongs to some great folks who attend a church in Jamestown where I almost always stop in and play a quick Sunday afternoon show while I’m on tour in the area. This particular time I was enjoying the beautiful reds, yellows, oranges and browns of the trees across the lake in mid-October when I realized I needed to write a song for my friend Greg. He had just moved away from Chicago to Brooklyn and I wanted to tell him how much I missed him. We’d known each other since high school in the small town in Northern Michigan where we grew up- and he LOVED a good country tune. So, I wrote him this one. It was finished within a few hours and is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. I sang it for him when I got to Brooklyn. It’s a beautiful moment when you get to sing a song you’ve written FOR someone TO them for the first time. 

When it was time to leave town to finish up the rest of that tour, driving away from New York with the black clouds of Hurricane Sandy in my rearview mirror was one of the hardest drives of my life. When I got home I immediately reached out to my little sister Rebecca, and a girl from church who I barely knew- Charity Luce. I knew they both had beautiful voices and the first song I taught them was Last Night. Hearing their soulful harmony, seeing their chemistry, and feeling the elation of a song I already loved becoming something much more enthralling and delicious, changed my life. I am so thankful for each time I get together to sing with these ladies. 

Recording this tune was a complete delight. I knew that of the 5 songs on this record- this was the vocal jewel. This is where ‘Abbi Rajasekhar TRIO’ would shine the most. So, we kept the arrangement simple, taking cues from (recurring theme for Jordan and I) The Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton, and Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Our good friend, Todd Seely, was able to pop by the house and record a pedal steel feature on this song that I’m completely enamored with. I had no idea how fiendishly difficult that instrument is and I’m no longer surprised that so few people know how to play it and even fewer can play well. Its an incredible skill that I will always admire when I an expert technician.

03 Last Night

I must have written 15 versions of this song. Most were terrible; some were emo some, were R&B, one even sounded like a circus. The pressure was mounting and I didn’t end up with a final version of the song until the day I had scheduled a rehearsal with the girls. They had been waiting to hear this song I had told them about for months and I would have been mortified to show up to rehearsal and not have the song finished. 

Early in the day I had all of the lyrics finished, but the music was ghastly… it was a really emo song in ¾. I was starting to panic when, out of desperation, I took out everything complicated from the guitar line and switched it to a swinging 4/4 time. It was like flipping on a light switch and everything suddenly worked. The song was adorable and memorable and right. The last thing I had to figure out was how to fit together the last line of the verses- but luckily that weight was taken off of my shoulders and Charity and Rebecca came up with that lovely descending melody “I haven’t heard from you in days…” and that was the final twinkling magic the song needed. 

Recording this song was a much more pleasant experience that writing it. The romantically sweeping string parts came quickly to my mind, the fluttering clarinet was instinctual, and Jordan’s electric guitar work fit cozily into the arrangement instantly. Figuring out the ending was a bit tricky- I really wanted it to rile up into a temper tantrum. Jordan really shined here orchestrating and arranging the last minute of the song to sound like an explosion in slow motion- shrapnel of themes and sounds floating away. 

The story Trash My Heart tells is about the sad festering ache of being in love with someone who doesn’t love you, they never will, and you just can’t get over them because unfortunately – they aren’t jerks. That guy or gal is a lovely person who it was natural to fall in love with. They keep dragging you behind them because every time you almost work up the strength to walk away they do something sweet or fun that makes you fall for them all over again. It’s the worst; a wound that lingers and doesn’t heal.

Broken Heart

a scratch take from tonight..
it's chilly out.
outside in the dark i startled two beasts...
i froze.
once my eyes adjusted to the night i realized it was only two deers.
they had been eating the dewy field grass.
we stared at each other for awhile.
no one moved.
i could feel my heart.
i could almost feel theirs.
but who really was the inferior one?
i walked back inside of the music studio
and quietly shut the door.
it's October.
my favorite month.
and it's almost gone.
and i'm getting older.
and i can see it in my face.
time flies and sweet things die.
and i know there is life within death..
but it racks my brain..
and downright immobilizes me at times.

anyhow,

i'm messing around with what will be "short piano interludes" on my album.
and here's a sample tonight...
it's a super scratchy take w/ crazy reverb.
i just re-listened to it in my bedroom & i like where it's going..
although it's a bit messy, i like where my high range could take this piece.
really i probably should end this audio post with "Trick or Treat!" since it's not polished.. but you are getting skeleton bare bones tunes sung from my guts wich seems appropriate for the coolest time of the year... Halloween!!

October Dream Howl

i went out to the studio the other day.... it had been a long time...
and i recorded this on my MIDI keyboard.
it's a work in progress.
i wrote this simple song during a really difficult time last summer on the old piano in my parents house.
i was experiencing some spiritual confusion, self doubt &amp; desperation to the point of becoming physically ill.
it was one of those times where i realized i just really, really NEED a Savior.
not only need, but want.
i think it's certainly a good thing to be a free-thinker..to think outside of the box, but sometimes it feels like a curse, the struggle to find your ground.
it is times like those when we need revelation.
