MIXED SIGNALS II represents the next chapter of Fax and Braulio Lam’s collaboration, which started with their first EP in 2020. Across four tracks, they navigate creative exploration, and wander among the textures, colors, and sizes that sound can possess. 
  
Much like its predecessor MIXED SIGNALS, the sequel EP delivers a meditative ambient swirl, dedicated to finding balance while still moving. And yet, if the first album was to be considered grounded and earthy, MIXED SIGNALS II is determined to challenge gravity—it creates spacious cinematic landscapes that stretch out and up.  

The four tracks are distinctive in their progression: The airy subtleties of the field recordings in ”Fragmented” take off and open up into an expanse of drone, with echoes of feedback further off in the distance. “Porta” twinkles in a dark sky; it wavers slightly in a liminal space of gradual transformation. In “Visions”, there is a hypnotic revelation, with an underlying heartbeat that gently draws one into its ascent. Finishing with the title track, “Mixed Signals II” is a docking; it rotates as it revolves, slowly considering what lies beyond its own orbit. 

This meditative soundtrack is like a hazy black and white image, captured by a telescope or transmitted by a satellite, hinting at what lies far beyond our own limits of perception. The arrangement of acoustic instruments and electric guitars layer with field recordings and synthesizers to create a hypnotic reflection on sound—how it reaches out in the space around it, how it rises, how it looks, and how it feels.  

MIXED SIGNALS II was recorded between Tijuana and Mexicali, in Mexico by musicians Braulio Lam and Ruben Tamayo (a.k.a. Fax). Together, the artists built upon their first collaboration to pass beyond the horizon of instrumental music.

“Fluid Meditations” marks DJ Gigola's debut album, set to be released on the 3rd of February 2023.
In eight tracks she explores shared aspects of meditation and the dance experience, fusing them into a new form of introspective practice. Gigola expresses her approach through the lens of guided meditation with spoken word. Lyrically, she traverses three aspects in particular: awareness of the now, embodiment and unfolding of the ego. Her work presents these themes chronologically ordered in a continuous mix. The very personal compositions deliberately juxtapose leading themes of a virtual world, such as anonymity, the restlessness of online interaction, and the physical disembodiment.
We are guided through this process by her voice, which DJ Gigola places against a background of low-pass frequencies, field recordings, breathing techniques and ASMR. These are synthesised with a warp of organic percussions, goa, and psytrance - creating a meditation practice that goes beyond traditional methods by decontextualizing elements of rave as a catalyst for Gigola’s own exploration of escapism. Quite fittingly, she will debut her album in a live set at the 18th birthday of Berlin escapist club “Berghain” on the 11th of December.

Melbourne based producer, DJ and co-founder of Sumac Records, Jon Watts delivers his Butter Sessions debut, Music for 3 CDJs. With over 10 years experimenting as an artist, Jon has an established history with the Australian underground scene. Music for 3 CDJs, showcases two contrasting sides, revealing his ability to seamlessly navigate manifold sounds.

The A-side presents three distinct tracks, thread together with restless percussion and a propulsive force. The introduction to the EP, Prohaasation, is a medley of techno and electro fabrics which progressively build before abruptly halting -- generating suspense for the track to follow. The feverish William gasps and screeches in tones that peak and fall, accompanied by audio maintained throughout; reminiscent of a malfunctioning fax machine. Now It’s Done is a choppy and disjointed piece yet coherent in its structure that makes for a rewarding conclusion to the release’s first chapter.

Subtlety and minimalism prevail for side B, as Jon gifts us with loops that swirl and churn. AMB 4 marks the first deviation from the narrative of Side A; sounding like hypnotic swelling from the bottom of a deep well. AMB 5 follows suit, divulging more of the picture. Carved out of a sound bed of field recordings, the nine and a half minute piece enchants with its repetitive arc, a spaciousness mirrored in the EP’s farewell. The last track Piano 1, is an intricate study of a singular piano chord, examining the layers of the chord’s sustain that are disclosed. A testament to Jon’s unadorned restraint and confirmation of the old adage that less is really more.
