Alexander Warenberg was born in Kharkov, in 1952. Tracing five generations of musicians in his family - his maternal grandfather was a student of Leopold Auer and Rimsky-Korsakov and a friend of Glazunov, and both his parents were first violinists in the Leningrad Philharmonic under Mravinsky, his father on front desk as second concert-master (1951-1977) - He studied piano at the Leningrad Conservatoire with Pavel Serebryakov. A national prize-winner in the USSR, revering Sofronitzky as his 'absolute' god, he emigrated to the West in July 1977. Formerly a professor at the Utrecht Conservatoire, he was until quite recently active as a recitalist, concerto and chamber music player, his CDs including Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Tchaikovsky's Seasons. In February 2002 he appeared at the Concertgebouw playing the Tchaikovsky B flat minor with Kuchar and the National Symphony Orchestra of the Ukraine. Damage within his right arm diagnosed since has, however, halted his career. Living in rural Belgium, he works now mainly as a composer and arranger in film and television.
