The theme 'More Than Human Communication' inspired me to stitch together a soundscape containing my field recordings of noises of moments of nature within the various cities I've lived, a synthesizer composition, and sounds of animals calling and singing. The field recordings bring our attention to the bits of nature acted upon, acting out, and noticed within the city environment. For example, we bring our attention to rocks as we hear them falling onto one another at a demolition and construction site in New York. A waterfront metal gate, blocking access to the water, is heard creaking as the bay waves crash upon the shoreline in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Sounds of planes and birds flying overhead remind us of the various natural and technological sounds heard in the background within cities. The sound of a fan outside a 7/11 "convenience store" in Koreatown, Los Angeles adds to the ambiance of the chaotic yet meditated upon isolated sounds of a city. Symbolic church bells in the distance in Ghent, Belgium, once activated by a human, are now left to their own temporal repetition and the sound waves from the motion of the bell communicate with the city. The technology of synthesizers and their sound waves communicate the unspoken and untranslatable infinite spirit in the form of musical tones and rhythms. The sounds of whales in the faraway ocean are the dreams of animals and nature, and expansion of awareness, as we remember and dream worlds beyond our immediate location and environment. The projection of a dream in the form of the soundscape of a sound city concludes as the reel on the projector reaches its end. The sound piece brings the sounds of these objects, water, wind, and the fuzzy connections and communications to our attention; it highlights nature within cities, which often lack, destroy, or cut out the potential for an abundance of these untouched connections, flows, and experiences. Yet upon listening, we may realize that the entwinement of nature within and around man-made constructions is ever-present.
