Written in autumn 2022 as the first project of my undergraduate degree in composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, this piece displays an early interest in minimalism and limited material.

This recording was done in Guildhall's studio and was performed by Tianyu Shangguan.

Solo For Alto Saxophone - Alexander Cann

This piece was written during the autumn of 2023, as the first project of my second year undergraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, for wind quintet. It conceptually explores breath, as well as experimenting with movement structure and speech.

This piece was written for my good friend Fergus Butt and performed at the Guildhall New Music Society's ClingFilm event in late spring 2024. It was written for bassoon and fixed media (video) so is best enjoyed as video, which is available on YouTube. 

This recording is taken from a live performance and therefore the audio quality is not spectacular. Still, bassoonist Fergus Butt did an incredible job, and the sheer skill involved in executing this music is commendable.

CAL9000 - Alexander Cann

This piece for string quartet and actor was written in the summer of 2024 as part of a project run by Olivia Underwood. It takes the fairy-tale Hansel and Gretel as a dramatic vehicle to explore tunings from Pythagorean to extended Just Intonation.

This quartet was comprised of members of the Guildhall Session Orchestra and it was narrated by Bethany Wooding.

The Piano Is Out Of Tune (and I am OK with that) is a piece written for solo piano in the summer term of 2024. It was recorded by Ben Smith at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

The name comes from a common phrase among microtonal and tuning enthusiasts which points out the inharmonicity of 12TET. This piece is all about making the difference between 12TET and the harmonic series front and centre in a slow, dreamy landscape.
