«Strange dreams» was composed for C Barré ensemble in frames of Composers Lab of «reMusik.org» festival. This piece explores transition between conditions of being awake and falling asleep. I tried to recreate some thoughts and images emerging at this moment, which are extremely chaotic and elusive. Rhythmic structure is inspired by Myoclonus phenomenon – irregular twitching of muscles when person is falling asleep. This element creates ostinato background for brief phrases and passages, which improvisatory nature reflects the main idea of irrationality and unpredictability of this boundary state of our consciousness.

Сказка для флейты, скрипки, альта и виолончели (2010) – первый опыт работы с камерным ансамблем.  В пьесе выделяются два пространства, первое – мир реальный, в котором мы наблюдаем за тем, как мама убаюкивает малыша, и имеем возможность бегло окинуть взглядом маленькую уютную комнатку, услышать тиканье каминных часов, второе же пространство – непосредственно мир детского воображения, в котором оживают образы из маминой сказки.

'Fairy tale' ('Skazka') for flute, violin, viola & cello (2010)

Во время работы над "Четырьмя монологами на стихи Поля Верлена" для баса и фортепиано (2010) автор был заинтересован атмосферой декаданса, столь ярко отражённой в творчестве французского поэта. Результатом стал цикл, намеренно лишённый светлых образов, подчёркивающий состояние одиночества и изнеможения. В качестве литературного источника использованы переводы с французского, принадлежащие Б.Пастернаку, А.Гелескулу, А.Ревичу, В. Брюсову.

Драматургия произведения основана на контрасте двух образов — глобальной катастрофы, приводящей к гибели человечества, и Вселенной, оплакивающей его в тишине. Тема Вселенной, изначально представляющая собой изолированный надличностный мир, в процессе движения к кульминации неотвратимо включается во взаимодействие с миром человеческим.

"Плач Вселенной" для фортепиано и симфонического оркестра. Проект "Симфония Сибири". Исполняет Красноярский Академический Симфонический Оркестр. Дирижер - Владимир Ланде, солист - Алексей Логунов.

Lamentation of the Universe (piano & symphonic orchestra, 2014)

Соната №5 для фортепиано (2012) - Отличительной особенностью Пятой фортепианной сонаты является соединение архитектоники классической сонатной формы и импровизационного начала, выраженное в форме «диалога стилей» и получающего разнообразное преломление в процессе развёртывания музыкальной ткани, становления музыкального целого. Узловым моментом драматургии является противопоставление полярных образных сфер, обозначенных авторскими ремарками leggiero - marcatissimo, которое становится импульсом для жанровых и фактурных преобразований материала, кульминационной точкой которого является раздел фугато.

Piano sonata (piano, 2012)

Михаил Квадри (1897-1929) – русский композитор, ученик Н. Я. Мясковского и близкий друг Льва Оборина и Дмитрия Шостаковича. В 1929 году расстрелян как «участник контрреволюционного заговора», после чего почти на 90 лет его имя было стерто из мировой музыкальной истории.

Mikhail Kvadri - Piano sonata №1(performed by Alexey Logunov)

«Человек в желтой рубашке» (2011) - произведение написано по мотивам картины К. Малевича «Сложное предчувствие (Торс в желтой рубашке)» и представляет собой некую предысторию живописного полотна. Художник посчитал важным оставить на обороте холста следующие слова: «Композиция сложилась из элементов ощущения пустоты, одиночества, безвыходности жизни», что, в сумме с общим настроением картины, подтолкнуло композитора на развитие темы противостояния личности и агрессивно настроенного общества. Камерный балет «Человек в желтой рубашке» состоит из четырех частей, первая и четвертая – инструментальные, они призваны создать атмосферу, соответствующую краскам на холсте – изнеможение, палящее солнце, напряженное предчувствие роковых событий. Вторая часть – характеристика главного персонажа, создающая контрастный общему настроению балета залихватский и удалой образ русского молодца. Третья часть наиболее насыщена событиями – здесь происходит столкновение главного героя с противодействующей силой, неравный бой, оканчивающийся его «духовной» гибелью.

Man in a yellow shirt (after K. Malevich, chamber ballet, 2011)

Apophis is a 0.230-mile-diameter asteroid discovered in 2004. Its orbit is characterized by close approaches to our planet which caused a period of concern about possible collision with Earth and the following global disaster. In this regard, the asteroid was named after the ancient Egyptian deity who embodied chaos. Apep (Apophis in Greek) appears in art as a giant serpent who tries to swallow the sun during its nightly journey through the underworld but each time he is defeated by the sun-god Ra. This catchy name was the main reason why observations of this asteroid (which in fact is only 6th on various risk tables) got a noticeable resonance in mass media and generated a lot of rumors. Though according to recent research the possibility of collision with Apophis in 2029 or 2036 is excluded, there is still some small chance of this happening in 2068 or later.

Apophis (ensemble, 2019)

VV Cephei is an eclipsing binary star system located in the constellation Cepheus. The supergiant primary of this system (VV Cephei A) is one of the largest known stars, with approximate size varying from 1050 to 1900 solar radii. The fact that VV Cephei A fills its Roche lobe causes the flowing of matter from star to companion VV Cephei B. It probably makes the space around the system one of the deadliest places we could imagine. However, if there was the smallest probability to survive on a hypothetical planet revolving around VV Cephei, it would be possible to watch one of the most spectacular sunrises in the Universe. “VV Cephei” was composed in 2019 as a part of the “Hammer & Nail” collaboration between band and composition departments of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; represents an attempt to create a musical image of this stunning event that we are unlikely to ever see.

The piece was premiered on 12 November 2019 at concert Sacra et Profana by IU Concert Band and Jason Nam, its conductor and Assistant Professor in JSoM.

VV Cephei (concert band, 2019)

For a long time, I have been concerned about what humanity treats the Earth. Such things as the Great Pacific garbage patch, air and water pollution, and deforestation destroy our environment which is so precious to our lives. Considering this, it doesn’t really matter how much we contribute to climate change (as some scientists argue if we create any influence at all). What is important, is that we need to revise our attitude to ecological problems. This belief became an idea of my new composition for fixed media.

I used passionate speech by Greta Thunberg as starting point (she pronounced it at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York on September 23rd). Greta is probably the most discussed child on our planet in 2019. Despite all controversial opinions, she became a symbol of the environmental movement. 

“GRETA” also includes fragments of speeches from different years by Severn Cullis-Suzuki, Harrison Ford and Prince Charles. In this music I attempted to recreate my feelings about ecological problems. I intentionally used soundscape elements mixed with artificial sounds, which corrupt initial calm and quiet scenery turning it at some point into a lifeless desert.

Fragile World (piano & live electronics, 2019 DEMO)

"Les Quadrantides" for flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello and piano (op. 13) – created in February, 2013 represents the first part of the cycle devoted to the space phenomena. Time-lapse videos of a meteoric shower, and also created by experts of NASA sound reconstructions of magnetospheres of various planets and stars served as material for inspiration. Composition recreates the moment of emergence of a meteoric shower against various changes of a space perceived by the person. The premiere took place on March 16 in a chamber hall of the St. Petersburg conservatory of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov.

Les Quadrantides (ensemble, 2013)

Russian composer and pianist.

Alexey Logunov was born on 26th of January 1990 in Leningrad, Russia. He graduated from Saint-Petersburg State Conservatory of Rymsky-Korsakov in 2014 where he studied composition with Professors Vladimir Tsitovich and Gennady Banshchikov, and was later assistant to Professor Sergei Slonimsky. Alexey studied piano performance at Saint-Petersburg Conservatory mentored by Professor Ekaterina Murina from 2016-2018. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (Bloomington, USA) where he studies with Professors P.Q. Phan, Eugene O’Brien and Tansy Davies.

Alexey’s music has been performed at numerous Russian and international festivals, such as “From Avangard to present days”, “Children’s Earth”, “Sound Ways”, “Musica Futura” (Minsk, Republic of Belarus), “New music-new reality” (Ekaterinburg), “Composer 2.0” (Yaroslavl), Midwest Composers Symposium (Indiana University, USA). He collaborated with artictic groups “Musica Futura” and “Dialectic of Sound” in 2010-2011. In 2016 Alexey participated in the “Roche Continents” program in Salzburg (Austria) by Roche. In 2017 he took part in a concert tour of the Atlantic coastal cities of France as part of the festival “Dinard réunit les jeunes virtuoses”. Alexey participated in workshops with Matti Kovler, Klaus Lang, Peep Lassmann, Robert Paterson, Jeffrey Mumford and the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (MCME).

Alexey Logunov is a laureate of the IV International competition of performing musicians and composers “Romanticism: sources and horizons” Franz Schubert’s in memoriam (2013, Moscow), VI and VII young composer’s competitions at the International festival “Three centuries of classical romance” (2016, 2018, Saint-Petersburg), II young composers competition “Siberia symphony” (2017, Krasnoyarsk).
