For our 35th podcast we welcome Dschen - a Munich based DJ, composer, modular synthesist, improviser and music lover.

Dschen caught our attention through his soft and dark soundscapes that cross paths with ambient, deep techno and a deep and hypnotic halftime, all of which focus on the organic features of sound. 
 
For this podcast, Dschen explores the depths of ambient and provides a soothing and caring mix.

Excerpts from Wire and Pine (2025).

Wire and Pine pays tribute to the small, homemade Celtic harp that was fashioned, without any plan or blueprint, by my grandfather. Guided only by his intuition and knack for woodworking, he created an instrument that fostered my love of harp folk music and ultimately set me on my future career path (albeit in an indirect way).

Made from the materials he had to hand - soft pine wood and fishing wire – the instrument can no longer be tuned; the hard metal tuning pegs (read: washers and bolts) having sunk into the pale wood. However, its musical life has taken on a new dimension in Wire and Pine.

One recent summer in my childhood garage (not the most pristine of recording conditions), I sampled each of the harp's strings, naming the pitches one by one as I plucked and recorded. These recorded notes - transformed, re-tuned and for the most part transported from the context of that dusty garage – comprise the backbone of this electroacoustic work, which aims to set free the music inherent in this beloved little instrument. Now and again, the sonic dust of the garage makes it into the tail of a harp note. The sounds cannot be clinically separated from their real-world context without losing some of their spirit.

The work moves from exploring its recognisable sound source to a dense and reverent sound world. The harp’s plucks and scratches are joined by a chorus of morose voices. Finally, fishing wire flies as the notes become unbound from any semblance of Western tuning.

A god shaped hole. The barren desolation of a fallen and failed creation. You see the light of long dead stars. Your existence is nothing but an echo of a dying god's screams. The unseen converges. Surrounds you. And it tightens like a noose.

L’Heure Bleue : renaître du silence is a commission from the Groupe de Recherches Musicales. 

The work addresses the re-awakening of the human being and its environments which are illustrated through acousmatic sound.  The barely audible beginning represents the human perception of the re-awakening of the senses and the recognition of surrounding life and civilization as it also comes to life at l’heure bleue.  The re-awakening of the physical body takes place through the simplicity and happiness of solitary play, and this joyous energy later expands to a societal level.  Following, is the perception of the larval stages of nature which unfold to herald the re-awakening of nature.  The work concludes with the psychological and, finally, spiritual re-awakening of the human being.

L’Heure Bleue : renaître du silence was realized in 2015-2016 in the multiphonic studio at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris and at the Métamorphoses d’Orphée studio at Musiques & Recherches in Ohain (Belgium). The work was premiered on October 8, 2016 in the series Multiphonies 2016-17: Akousma: Concert de créations at the Auditorium Saint-Germain — MPAA, Paris, France.
