ALTC (aka Alexis Le-Tan & Tom Colebrook) - Social/ist/ Edits For The People

I was first turned on to Goa music in the early 90s, young and innocent, discovering the communal state of trance for the first time. Back then I wasn’t interested in its roots or it’s origins and preferred to get lost in music not thinking of the days to come or those gone by.
When it all became formulaic and a genre as such, things started to lose their magic and I begun to explore sounds of the past, turning my nose up at something which for me had lived it’s course…
I dived into a whole new sonic horizon, old relics which sounded new to me and more interesting than a lot of contemporary releases. Unconsciously, I was drawing a map which covered many seminal dancefloors worldwide. I would later find out that the distance between most of these tracks had no boundaries as they could just as well have been played in Chicago, Manchester, Gent, Ibiza, Baia Degli Angeli, or Goa…
This mix can be listened to like a GPS directing you towards those places, somewhere in the mid 80s, with Goa as the meeting point and final destination. Funnily enough it is also very close to the first mixes that helped put my name on the map almost 20 years ago…

This set was recorded during the launch of Oddity Radio, which happened in Paris on the 2nd April 2022. A new project initiated by yours truly which is not a radio in the true sense of the word, more a collective hub which gathers a selection of our favorite record labels, showcasing playlists from each of their back catalogues and occasional exclusive mixes. These independent labels are some of the finest of their kind, filled with artists and attitudes that we believe exemplify a creative spirit for the future. Carving a niche in anything from the esoteric to the leftfield, global dance or laidback ambience alike. We strive to open a path into their psyches through sounds, words and visions. Bringing these like-minded folk together for the first time, allowing their tunes to breath harmoniously side by side in a continuous mix of complimentary aural delights.

Sometimes things just click. It can happen in many different ways and for lots of different reasons, but when it does the feeling is always great. Some ingredients are made to match and others aren’t, however it is often the unlikely combinations which make the most interesting mixes. Often related to our senses it can be sounds, smells, tastes or even feelings. Since its inception The Other Side is a melting pot where any of these encounters can happen or at least we hope to provoke those unexpected connections whenever you tune in.

Distant melodies from another time chime away whilst the occasional MC has something to say. Blaze it, blast it and let it boom whilst you groove to the rhythm and it takes you away.

Ok, this is a special one we have been holding on to for over 10 years. Yes that's right this mix was recorded over ten years ago but only came out on Good Morning Tapes last year... Only a few people heard it before, can you believe it? 
Now things are coming even more Full Circle as it was aired live for the first time last week on Crimson's "Pink Eyed Blue" show on https://radiozora.fm/ I thought this was fitting as I will also be playing with him this summer at THE Ozora Festival! Those who know, know ;-)

The empty longings of nostalgia exist as a far cry behind taking from the past with a view to understanding a new place it might hold in the future. Now - with the 90’s revival in something of a full swing - Good Morning Tapes finally gets the chance to release a pivotal 10 year old mix that didn’t just ignite a curious wave of reflection and appropriation, it marked a culmination in the shifting sonic sands for its creator Mr. Alexis Le-Tan. His name needs little light trust upon it in these hallowed cosmic halls, with his enduring and ever present mixes being a staple for those that know. Back to Disco Valley is arguably his most important mix - it both recontextualised a dirty and forgotten sound of the past, and facilitated a wave of new freedoms for those wishing to look backwards in order to move forwards. Most importantly it planted the seed for everything Full Circle to come.

Back to Disco Valley is above all else a personal reckoning for Alexis and Joakim, it marked a moment when many problems inherent in a trapped older sound - with a sublime yet dated history of its own - could breath fresh life in the present day; a new slower realm was born. The slowing down of dance music is nothing new, and certainly where peak time beats have existed a spiritual shadow that revels in a slower ethereal space to dance has never been far away. Stylistically on one level, Back to Disco Valley might seem to build on what Baldelli or Loda were doing many years ago, and it certainly has that effortless charm, but it goes much further, not just in its re-appraisal of the frenetic fast paced sounds of Goa, but as a signifier of where many wanted to head on the dancefloor - towards a slower oasis - incorporating new releases and modern sounding rarities along the way. Indeed, in selecting the 33rpm dial rather than that marked 45, Full Circle at once opened up the new space inside a music some of us went bananas to 30 years ago, and at the same time made sense of a crucial yet forgotten heritage; a confession became a badge of honour.

Coming back to Full Circle and its genesis: it was only a matter of time before the old Goa records would come back down from the racks and spawn a new life, and perhaps whilst Le-Tan cemented something a lot of us knew, Disco Valley somehow liberated many of those early records from their stylistic shackles initiating a creative project that - along side the collaborative work with Joakim - has released a wave of inspirational edits and re-imaginations. Full Circle - in all its conceptual & metaphorical majesty - really has come to represent the most stylish of takes on past sounds, both in the realm of selection and re-working. It is certainly true that Back to Disco Valley - sounding now as it did then (to the select tuned ears that got to listen) - reflects a perfect meeting between an off-tempo past, present and future, being more than a functional assemblage, it revives many a lost memories, inspiring a new batch of ideas. There is nothing wrong with looking back, as long as it has a purpose.

The beginning of a journey is never the same. Sometimes what happens in between can direct you to a similar path however it is those incidents that take you off course which make things more exciting. Not knowing what to expect and where you might end up can be challenging but if you follow your intuition and feel your way to the right place, the final destination is always worth the wait.

Moving from slow to fast to slow to fast and slow again, an emotional rollercoaster guaranteed to take you higher all the way. How in the dusty old name of Anjuna Beach did it ever get so fast..? So ponder Trance loyalists Alexis Le-Tan and Tom Colebrook as they reflect on their past exploits. Pace wasn’t an issue back then; Soho, Somerset, Ibiza, Goa.. all were the unified stomping grounds of these two old muckers. Bound together back then by the depth and breadth of psychedelic music, the endless parties, and of course the wondrous hilarity of it all… The naughties saw their paths wind off in different ways, but as the wise traveler returns to his beginnings, so too was a re-melding of mature minds inevitable... A re-appraisal of the past saw a yearning for a slower pace. Colebrook joined Le-Tan on his hitherto hugely influential half speed mission, and so, with the pure gusto of Now, the ALTC project was born. A living archive where old flames find a fitting new purpose at a different speed. ALTC is on a quest to uncover, adapt and rearrange past glories, making them more in tune to their common vision and goals.

Full Circle, also known as Alexis Le-Tan (Wonders Ovze World) and Joakim (Tigersushi, Crowdspacer), a long term project with close friends Le-Tan and Joakim music project and “concept band born from loving ears that want to re-process our electronic past.”

They’ve delivered some amazing edits of obscure Goa tracks and remixed the likes of Die Orangen, 10Lec6, and Tapan and released on Good Morning Tapes and Vladimir Ivkovic’s Offen.

“To complete a journey is to learn and to slow down and re-imagine is to enrich – Full Circle hears the hedonistic sound of the 90’s in a light that reflects a different space for our current time and beyond. Many of our close knit will be gathering today in Berlin to celebrate the life of our dear friend Jamie Tiller who left us too soon. Being unable to make it for various reasons and also held up by The Other Side I wanted to dedicate this show to him and Music From Memory. The label Jamie created with Tako 10 years ago has been instrumental in the development of a musical scene which today spans across the world and so many different genres. Introducing people to forgotten gems of the past and future heroes of tomorrow it was always a big influence on what you can hear here. Thank you Jamie for opening so many people's ears and hearts, you will be remembered forever.

Bringing things down a notch and opening the fractal gates into the chill zone, again... Everything is floating around and coming together in unusual compositions. The textures absorb every drop as they fall from above. All these entities intertwine into a visual sound clash, a different path that leads into a similar direction where the destination is always the same.

The visions slowly turning into fractals whilst exploring the unknown. These diffracted sights are nothing but your inner reflections, they are within all of us it just depends how far you can look or see. Sometimes a wrong start can be turned around to ones advantage. In this particular case the ending definitely makes up for the bad beginning, but it could also turn out the other way round...

First show of the year or last show of 2018? For this occasion, let me treat you to an extract of my set from the last Positive Education Festival. Veering away from the chill zone and diving head first into the rave… A Christmas gift which would’ve aired on the 25th December had the holiday season been postponed. No tracklist for this one but featuring some new music by Shadi Kries, Nick Mackroy, Otta Karawane and our forthcoming Full Circle remix of Die Orangen to close things off!
Here is what Tom Colebrook had to say about this sonic delivery:

Depth charge punctures the rolling soul, Chaotic mess on high.
Clash trash in the sands of man, The acid precipice and staggered fulcrums.
Wooden marionettes and broken names, Rotation symbols on the dawn line.
Even my hands can’t place lost dripping, The morph of a memory.
The lizard comes with a muscimol grip, The spotted king of old.
A sacred grip that he foretold,The rush today is ours, a bliss of the ages.
His memory fades inside the tube, Instructions are given.
On the sound box he stands, Waving discordant flags.
Punctured melodies of the night,
This is the broken sound of our past.
Sounding the drums are a troupe of misfits, Leathery rasps of the primate line.
Back in the water strong is the pulse, Such is clarity through the chaos.

As we approach the end of year and Christmas celebrations I thought I should share this mix we released with Good Morning Tapes earlier this summer. 

The 'Trip to Knowhere' is a new mission. Our sounds haven’t changed, but as this tide spits us back out on to an uncertain shore, our knowledge and ambitions realise the potential of a world where No can become the New Know, and it’s a place for us all to find. It could be infinite locations, where the dust from a Goa beach in '92 takes you beyond the covid highway to a beauty-fuel path, or just that imaginary journey liberating us with an elsewhere of possibilities. Out hear in Knowhere we are the patchwork harmonies, we are the fluorescent heros of an old trip. For now, Full Circle is a destination to Knowhere.

Full Circle - Trip To Knowhere (GMT 33)

After stumbling into some fluoro drapes and mad psychedelic music somewhere in a field around 93, the path to becoming a Goa Trance DJ was inevitable.
Before the turn of the millenium and after having lived the dream, I realized there was maybe a bit more to life and sailed towards a different journey. Meeting many friendly music heads along the way who always helped broaden my horizons... Spinning round the block and back a few times... Carrying on my mission to spread the music or the word, I eventually came back to the sound of my youth and gave it a new twist. 
In life, things always come Full Circle and you will find a good representation of that here… 
Been trying to slow things down as much as I can in these modern days where we all live in the fast lane!
