Full Circle - Back To Knowhere (GMT 44) a.k.a. The Other Side 50

I was first turned on to Goa music in the early 90s, young and innocent, discovering the communal state of trance for the first time. Back then I wasn’t interested in its roots or it’s origins and preferred to get lost in music not thinking of the days to come or those gone by.
When it all became formulaic and a genre as such, things started to lose their magic and I begun to explore sounds of the past, turning my nose up at something which for me had lived it’s course…
I dived into a whole new sonic horizon, old relics which sounded new to me and more interesting than a lot of contemporary releases. Unconsciously, I was drawing a map which covered many seminal dancefloors worldwide. I would later find out that the distance between most of these tracks had no boundaries as they could just as well have been played in Chicago, Manchester, Gent, Ibiza, Baia Degli Angeli, or Goa…
This mix can be listened to like a GPS directing you towards those places, somewhere in the mid 80s, with Goa as the meeting point and final destination. Funnily enough it is also very close to the first mixes that helped put my name on the map almost 20 years ago…

Ok, this is a special one we have been holding on to for over 10 years. Yes that's right this mix was recorded over ten years ago but only came out on Good Morning Tapes last year... Only a few people heard it before, can you believe it? 
Now things are coming even more Full Circle as it was aired live for the first time last week on Crimson's "Pink Eyed Blue" show on https://radiozora.fm/ I thought this was fitting as I will also be playing with him this summer at THE Ozora Festival! Those who know, know ;-)

The empty longings of nostalgia exist as a far cry behind taking from the past with a view to understanding a new place it might hold in the future. Now - with the 90’s revival in something of a full swing - Good Morning Tapes finally gets the chance to release a pivotal 10 year old mix that didn’t just ignite a curious wave of reflection and appropriation, it marked a culmination in the shifting sonic sands for its creator Mr. Alexis Le-Tan. His name needs little light trust upon it in these hallowed cosmic halls, with his enduring and ever present mixes being a staple for those that know. Back to Disco Valley is arguably his most important mix - it both recontextualised a dirty and forgotten sound of the past, and facilitated a wave of new freedoms for those wishing to look backwards in order to move forwards. Most importantly it planted the seed for everything Full Circle to come.

Back to Disco Valley is above all else a personal reckoning for Alexis and Joakim, it marked a moment when many problems inherent in a trapped older sound - with a sublime yet dated history of its own - could breath fresh life in the present day; a new slower realm was born. The slowing down of dance music is nothing new, and certainly where peak time beats have existed a spiritual shadow that revels in a slower ethereal space to dance has never been far away. Stylistically on one level, Back to Disco Valley might seem to build on what Baldelli or Loda were doing many years ago, and it certainly has that effortless charm, but it goes much further, not just in its re-appraisal of the frenetic fast paced sounds of Goa, but as a signifier of where many wanted to head on the dancefloor - towards a slower oasis - incorporating new releases and modern sounding rarities along the way. Indeed, in selecting the 33rpm dial rather than that marked 45, Full Circle at once opened up the new space inside a music some of us went bananas to 30 years ago, and at the same time made sense of a crucial yet forgotten heritage; a confession became a badge of honour.

Coming back to Full Circle and its genesis: it was only a matter of time before the old Goa records would come back down from the racks and spawn a new life, and perhaps whilst Le-Tan cemented something a lot of us knew, Disco Valley somehow liberated many of those early records from their stylistic shackles initiating a creative project that - along side the collaborative work with Joakim - has released a wave of inspirational edits and re-imaginations. Full Circle - in all its conceptual & metaphorical majesty - really has come to represent the most stylish of takes on past sounds, both in the realm of selection and re-working. It is certainly true that Back to Disco Valley - sounding now as it did then (to the select tuned ears that got to listen) - reflects a perfect meeting between an off-tempo past, present and future, being more than a functional assemblage, it revives many a lost memories, inspiring a new batch of ideas. There is nothing wrong with looking back, as long as it has a purpose.

Always trying to kick things off in a peaceful manner, whilst keeping the bigger artillery at bay. Moving from slow to fast to slow to fast and slow again, an emotional rollercoaster guaranteed to take you higher all the way. This mix of two halves, where the second can be found on 432Hz, is a trip which once segued together will guarantee maximum enlightenment.

Full Circle - Further Knowhere (GMT 61)

Every month I ask myself the same question: have I not played this before? Although the music is always different, I tend to be drawn to similar sounds over and over again. Having said that you will never hear the same tracks in any of my mixes. It might've happened once or twice but no more... The challenge is to create something new every time that is influenced by an idea or current mood. To distil and filter these releases, weaving them together unexpectedly so they resonate within each of us through an infinite journey to The Other Side.

Exploring different forms of pace through speed and half time, tribal rhythms colliding with industrial dub, bridging a new form of subconscious trance. Sensory overload, never ending delays for the first couple of tracks: what goes up must go higher. Cut once noticed, bring it down a notch and build again... 
Sometimes a wrong start can be turned around to ones advantage. In this particular case the ending definitely makes up for the bad beginning, but it could also turn out the other way round...

The call of duty or is it a double date? Either way, this show, also known as Arco Spettro, is a pre-recording made many moons ago for Arpa, my dear friend Barnabe Fillon’s perfume brand. B kindly asked me to record a series of mixes representing each scent from its first sequence. One of the main inspirations for his collection was the documentary Sisters with Transistors, which focuses on female electronic music pioneers. Bearing this in mind, it seemed like a good idea to feature only female composers in these recordings. Sometimes you are on a roll and everything just flows perfectly. In and out, fast and slow, the rhythm weaves its own tapestry. Sounds overlay in harmony and it all falls into place naturally. This feels like one of those magical moments: you are in the zone and nothing can stop you. The story unfolds just how you want it to and when it has to come to an end you just wish it could keep on going forever…

Exploring different territories or walking down a cul de sac can be refreshing at times, it can even be necessary to find THE way. It is our pleasure to share our latest podcast, this time from Full Circle’s Alexis Le-Tan.  The mix is a live recording taken from Bakk Heia at The White Hotel earlier this year. Alexis began playing around 3am, just as the club had reached capacity. Energy that was simmering under the surface began to be released, the initial hustle and bustle was over and people had found their place on the floor. As such, this mix expertly demonstrates Alexis’ ability to hook dancers in, giving them a playful push before engaging them into full mind melt mode. Starting with genre defying mid-tempo dubby sludgery, it moves into angular strains of new beat adjecent trancers before unleashing the Goa dragons on the rapturous mass of entranced bodies.

Bakk Heia Podcast 006 - Alexis Le-Tan (Live from Bakk Heia @ The White Hotel)

This is the first recording of me entering a new decade and it happens to be at one of my favorite parties: Buka in Milan. First show of the year or last show of 2018? For this occasion, let me treat you to an extract of my set from the last Positive Education Festival. Veering away from the chill zone and diving head first into the rave… A Christmas gift which would’ve aired on the 25th December had the holiday season been postponed. No tracklist for this one but featuring some new music by Shadi Kries, Nick Mackroy, Otta Karawane and our forthcoming Full Circle remix of Die Orangen to close things off!

Depth charge punctures the rolling soul, Chaotic mess on high.
Clash trash in the sands of man, The acid precipice and staggered fulcrums.
Wooden marionettes and broken names, Rotation symbols on the dawn line.

The lizard comes with a muscimol grip, The spotted king of old.
A sacred grip that he foretold,The rush today is ours, a bliss of the ages.

The Other Side 32, Lyl Radio 28/04/20

As we approach the end of year and Christmas celebrations I thought I should share this mix we released with Good Morning Tapes earlier this summer. 

The 'Trip to Knowhere' is a new mission. Our sounds haven’t changed, but as this tide spits us back out on to an uncertain shore, our knowledge and ambitions realise the potential of a world where No can become the New Know, and it’s a place for us all to find. It could be infinite locations, where the dust from a Goa beach in '92 takes you beyond the covid highway to a beauty-fuel path, or just that imaginary journey liberating us with an elsewhere of possibilities. Out hear in Knowhere we are the patchwork harmonies, we are the fluorescent heros of an old trip. For now, Full Circle is a destination to Knowhere.

Full Circle - Trip To Knowhere (GMT 33)

Initially recorded as a mixtape for my dear friends https://soundcloud.com/pammix in 2017 and aptly titled "Those Were The Days", who would've imagined such a pun could ever ring so true? When things as simple as seeing friends, traveling and dancing used to be taken for granted, an ancient reality which seems more like a distant memory today. This audio artifact is an ode to those times where one could freely roam from one party to the next, not worrying what tomorrow will hold, no strings attached, just the sheer joy of hedonism. As we turn the page of a year which will surely be remembered as the most challenging we have known yet, one can only hope that the future will start to look brighter from now on...

The Other Side 40, Lyl Radio 05/01/21 a.k.a. "Those Were The Days"

After stumbling into some fluoro drapes and mad psychedelic music somewhere in a field around 93, the path to becoming a Goa Trance DJ was inevitable.
Before the turn of the millenium and after having lived the dream, I realized there was maybe a bit more to life and sailed towards a different journey. Meeting many friendly music heads along the way who always helped broaden my horizons... Spinning round the block and back a few times... Carrying on my mission to spread the music or the word, I eventually came back to the sound of my youth and gave it a new twist. 
In life, things always come Full Circle and you will find a good representation of that here… 
Been trying to slow things down as much as I can in these modern days where we all live in the fast lane!
