‘Humble Star’ kicks the EP off, slowly luring the listener into a futuristic, shimmering atmosphere of potentiality.  It adds several complex rhythms that quickly build up some light tension and get things moving, continuing to build and build, as though you’re speeding through a futuristic city in a hover car at dusk.  The tension is released when the drop comes in, immediately creating an air of warmth and spaciousness, as illanthropy masterfully uses pauses and spaciousness to empower the synth melody.  Those warm synths carry this section, gradually adding subtleties that drive the song forward and keep it dynamic all the way through.  ‘Humble Star’ demonstrates that you don’t need over-the-top heaviness to get a crowd moving, and that simplicity can end up being the most powerful.  This is a song that you can listen to over and over on repeat, and find something new that hooks you each time.

“When I was writing ‘Humble Star’, I was in a strange transition of success.  I went from being a completely unrecognized DJ to releasing songs on @MalLabelMusic in less than a year, and it was easily the biggest leap I had ever made.  I am deeply humbled by my recent successes and that is not a feeling I want lost in my ego somewhere down the line.  This song is about relativity in terms of us (human beings) and our relationship to the external and internal.  Everything in the universe is made up of elements created by stars, stars literally create the universe. I believe at any given moment we are both the most significant and least significant beings in the process of reality.  We create our external realities by imposing our internal realities on them.  We create the universe, but we should never lose the feeling of being humbled and taken away by the great mystery.  This applies to my experience in the music industry, seeing all of these prima donna, self-absorbed DJs who promote getting wasted and partying non-stop.  I don't want to speak badly of anyone, AND I love to party (obviously) but these visceral experiences allow us to re-center ourselves and focus on our intellectual endeavors, whether that be making music or running a food co-op.  There is a balance here, just as there should be with our perceived significance/ego.”
