Recording a "covers special" has been on my to-do list for a few years now. Quite happy to finally get around to it after debating some very tough choices with myself. I think all serious music lovers have a love and hate relationship with cover versions. It just either really works or can be the absolute most cringe-worthy musical moments.

So here we go! This is a two-part special featuring my favorite versions. Part 2 will be out this week as well. One day I will probably need to revisit the concept since I left out many versions I adore.

The sound of dreamland this week comes from a collaborative effort between multi instrumentalist and producer William Yates aka Memotone and Glasgow via Brighton based Soroosh Khavari aka Soosh. The pair have are set to release their atmospheric yet perfectly musical, Memoosh LP on Monday 6th October via Project Mooncircle and now deliver your mid-week lullaby exclusively for i-D. Memtone delivers the first insomnia-battling 31 minutes, followed by a meditative ending courtesy of Soosh. Press play and drift away.

"I have collected a small selection of music which, in my mind, is a perfect tonic to insomnia. There are enough imaginative ideas in the first half of the mix to tire your brain out, walking across the many wonderful and stange landscapes of your inner environment, before slowing lowering you into the deeper, more solidly rooted, sleep enducing tones. However, I feel it would be a shame to actually fall asleep as there is just as much to pay attention too in the latter half of the mix. In Hour 2 it's DJ Khalab from Italy (another Black Acre artist), who has collaborated with Solid Steel 2014 Mix of the Year winner Clap!Clap! He had this to say about his mix;
"The beat tape is divided in two parts. The first one is the pure beat tape, with tracks totally unreleased, and it most represents the beatmaking aspect and field recording. It's the more instinctive and it's all made by the sampler (sp404), which is the central hub of this part.
The second part is made integrally by unreleased tracks and remixes composed with some friends of mine (clap clap!, mo kolours, ninos du brasil). It's the part that more represent the job of the producer, it was made in the studio with several softwares, sequencers, synthesizers."

Solid Steel Radio Show 5/6/2015 Hour 2 - DJ Khalab

Typesun, aka Luke Harney, is a Bristolian producer more well versed in music's avant-garde than might be expected from his break out single, The PL, a slice of minimal underground soul, that for all its echoes of Chet Baker's lonesome jazz still found its way onto Radio 1, becoming something of a hit for an artist who often treads more experimental ground. Typesun's work though comes from that Bristol tradition; trip hop, dub, and rave, which he attacks with an obvious appreciation for good-time sound-system soul that cuts through the city's sometimes sombre tone.
