State of Jazz

Within Without, the expansive string laden centre of Scrimshire's 2021 album Nothing Feels Like Everything, receives a beautiful rework from long-time friend and collaborator Emanative. 

Scrimshire and Emanative appeared in the London Jazz scene around the same time in 2008 and in fact in 2010 Scrimshire remixed song Illusions, from Nick Woodmansey's debut record. Now the prolific producer and writer returns the favour with a meditative and uplifting take.

The bonds on this rework are many and deep as both artists have worked extensively with Jessica Lauren over the years. In this remix, Nick brings more of his own collaborators along for the ride, with additional saxophone and vocals lifting this peaceful "optimistical" version.

Issued on BBE Music, “Reflections” is the new album by London-based harp player and composer Alina Bzhezhinska, alongside her HipHarpCollective.

Following up her critically acclaimed debut album “Inspiration” (Ubuntu 2018), Bzhezhinskaputs together a second long-player, collaborating with British jazz stars Tony Kofi(Saxophones), Jay Phelps (Trumpet), Julie Walkington (Double Bass) and vocalist VimalaRowe, strongly supported by international talents Mikele Montolli (Electric Bass), Joel Prime(Percussion), Adam Teixeira (Drums) and Ying Xue (Violin & Viola).

Alina creates a unique sound on the harp with layered effects and electronics, combining original works and covers to pay homage to some of jazz, funk and hip-hop’s greatest innovators. Throughout the record, she draws from a variety of influences, including the likes of Dorothy Ashby’s ‘Afro-Harping’, Alice Coltrane’s spiritual outputs, Joe Henderson’s free-form jazz experimentation, 90s Acid Jazz and Trip-Hop.

“This album is very vibrant and reflects directly on London’s multicultural community. We had so much fun making this recording – it truly built up our morale in the middle of the pandemic and I hope our fans will feel this energy too.

For ‘Reflections’ I tried to break from any stereotypes and limitations – what you hear is my own choice of sounds and influences, taken from the many mixtapes I’ve been making since I was a teenager. I put together the music I like to listen to when I am happy or sad when I feel like dancing or meditating. The tunes we play are my own reflections on what I love the most – a free spirit, courage, innovation and all the beautiful things life gives us.

The second of ‘Three Singles’ from David Marston, Mirror Gazer & Dan Izco's new trio project has arrived – this time featuring guest vocals by legendary Reggae founding father and Dub Music inventor, the late great Lee "Scratch" Perry himself.

We are thankful to have had the honor of working with Mr. Perry during his lifetime, and we are grateful that he was able to give us his blessing for the song while he was still with us. Our thoughts and love go out to his family – may his soul rest in peace and his music live on forever.

Warsaw’s U Know Me Records introduce us to drummer, improviser and producer Teo Olter, on the infectious jazz composition, “How am I doing? Where am I going?”, the opening cut on forthcoming compilation, ‘Portrety 2’.

The eight track album is the second in the series of ‘Portrety’ (meaning ‘portraits’) compilations, curated by U Know Me boss, Marcin “groh”  Grośkiewicz. Marcin tells us that “the idea for ‘portrety’ was simple’: to invite esteemed drummers to record a song for release under their own name. 

There was no strict musical framework, they could invite guests or record everything themselves, and no requirement to feature drums. ‘Portrety 2’ follows this same structure, and alongside Olter features contemporary soul from Wiktoria Jakubowska, drummer for the stars, DnB patterns from Immortal Onion’s Wojtek Warmijak, and a beatless symphony from Zbigniew Robert “Inferno” Promiński, drummer for renowned extreme metal band, Behemoth. 

Active across Warsaw’s improvised music scene, and a member of various groups, Olter previously released the album ‘Mir​ó​w’, showcasing his talent for not only improvised drumming but also electronic production. Olter tells us “at a point where music felt as far away as it ever did in my life, getting to be a part of the ‘Portrety 2’ record and composing my own music was a fantastic experience and great opportunity”. 

“How am I doing? Where am I going?” features frequent collaborators Tadeusz Cieślak on saxophone, Aleksander Żurowski on piano, Kamila Drabek on double bass, and Tymek Bryndal on double bass.

‘Portrety 2’ is released on U Know Me Records on May 31.
