Based in Baltimore, M.C. Schmidt is one half of the acclaimed electronic duo Matmos. As half of Matmos, Schmidt has worked with Terry Riley, Björk, Kronos Quartet, Peter Rehberg, INA-GRM, Rrose, Marshall Allen, Horse Lords, People Like Us, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Antony Hegarty, William Basinski, and many more. Batu Malablab, his first solo album, works a dislocating magic, indulging in a tradition of western fantasy of non-western music. Recalling gamelan-inspired experimental classics such as John Cage's prepared piano work, Can's "Ethnological Forgery Series," and Jon Hassell's "Fourth World" ambient music (GB 019CD/LP), Batu Malablab is imaginary global music made in the Baltimore basement studio pictured on the back of the album. Features appearances by Wobbly and Thomas Dimuzio.

"It's not a mix, not a release, not a snippet, not a podcast, not my last live performance... It's one of my LOGBOOK recorded during the end 2015 and beginning of 2016, the second of a series to come. It's a pleasure to share that with you thanks to Berceuse Heroique.
LOGBOOK 02 It’s some sort of diary that I’ve recorded on tapes. It gathers materials of all kinds and summarize these impulsive and thoughtless recordings leading to the definitive pieces. Some were given full result since, others were left unchanged. I’ve accumulated lots of tapes containing such material. I’ve decided to share the first batch of a series to come. It won’t be produced by any label and has no vocation to exist as some kind of release. It’s just for those interested by my musical approach — tapes that I could eventually bring with me on forthcoming gigs. Above all, it’s one of those important steps leading to the finished products; I mean the tracks you might have already heard on my various releases. I guess it illustrates my desire to make an extraordinary piece of work out of dull and vapid material.
