One year had passed since the devastation of mankind. All life ravaged by the undead plague, a tide of death sweeping across the planet mercilessly, as the ever-growing mass of the lifeless swelled in its wake. The sentient population of the globe was reduced to pitiful numbers, hiding in the wreckage of once vibrant cities, long since destroyed in the futile battle for survival. Where once there was hope for survival, now remained only the ember of a desperate memory of a different future. The cycle of the dead was ever in motion, their ragged forms roaming in packs, haunting the urban desolation. Ever-dimming senses of their terminal animated corpses constantly ready to consume the living. An endless yearning to feed drove them relentlessly onwards through the desolate shadows of civilization’s end, whilst the earth below those skulking feet continued its galactic voyage obliviously. Above one such horde, a celestial alignment was unfurling in the cold depths of space. As the sun burned blood red against the horizon and the moon slid serenely across its infernal face, the light dimmed as heavy shade drew across planet. The shuffling of the horde paused as distant poured their anguish into the sky at the early arrival of night. Rotting faces raised to the heavens, the light of that unholy corona spilling across their putrid features. The dying rays of a bleak sunset penetrating their rotting sockets, as the SOLAR ECLIPSE leveled darkness upon the earth with raging eternal might.
 
Hungarian neurofunk legend CHRIS.SU returns to the EATBRAIN label in full force, following up his ‘Underground Culture’ label anthem and State of Mind Collaboration ‘Chariots’ with his first full EP – SOLAR ECLIPSE. The signal had flickered into existence without warning, a sudden complex sequence that almost filled the awaiting databanks within moments and laid out an array of schematics beyond comprehension. For years they labored, first to understand and then to build the machine it described, a craft that could finally escape the outermost reaches of the solar system and carry a single human beyond the limits of their star, to the point of the signal’s source. They picked the passenger with care - their most capable pilot, linguist and scientist, ascribed beyond the limits of fear through overwhelming curiosity… The journey was swift, covering that most immeasurable of distances in human terms within days. As he drew close to the origin, far from the sun and beyond the influence of the system, it appeared as a speck in the distance but quickly grew into a sight of overwhelming complexity, a vast silent ship, and static in the darkness, blotting out the light of distant stars. As the shuttle drew close, it shuddered into life, internal lights hesitating before firmly illuminating and colossal vents purged gases into the yawning nothingness of space. The vessels nestled together, extending appendages and exchanging code. With a sigh the airlock opened and sequential lighting ushered him within the vacant hulk, a faint trembling of power running through the hull and beneath his feet. He entered the endless chamber with wide pupils, so big that it receded into blackness, the overwhelming mechanism before him filling his vision – a vast sphere engineered to an impossible configuration… a pathway to the stars… the WARP DRIVE.

MALUX is an artist who surged into the drum & bass sphere suddenly in 2016, delivering a tight selection of releases on some of the leading labels in the genre and making his mark on the European live scene with rapid success. With the release of his WARP DRIVE EP on the label at the epitome of the neurofunk scene, EATBRAIN, 2017 sees him firmly open up a new horizon with a selection of 5 powerful tracks designed to utterly atomise the dance. It’s time for another release from Kosen Productions – the French label who’ve shown an undeniable penchant for releasing high quality music at a staggering rate. And it’s not just scene heavyweights such as Signs, The Clamps and Nickbee who’ve paved the way in recent years for the imprint. It’s also artists like Machine Cult, who Kosen have spent time identifying amongst the tide of emerging newcomers. And he leads the charge for their next release, a four track EP which will surely be the turning point for a blossoming production career. 

With first track ‘Deepmind’ serving as a climatic entree, Machine Cult lets you know exactly what he’s about. Weighty pads and a zig-zagging bassline characterise the artist’s signature, pushing forward on sub-heavy kicks and punchy sonics. Machine Cult gives his own take on the neurofunk vibe, with pitched up instrumentals and a drop which throws you straight into a dancefloor-lead set of hooks. ‘Conduit’ is your second helping, a track which shakes you to the core, building up on dark atmospherics and carefully strung arpeggios. Layer by layer, the intensity rises, with the pace quickening alongside an explosion of beats. ‘Conduit’ runs like a freight train, unstoppable in its driving power and leading you on top of a colossal mix.

For the EP’s second part, ‘Data Husk’ features a more minimal approach. Flickering drums and distorted LFO orchestrates a dark, aloof feel to the record. Humanistic overtures act as synths, peaking between each cautiously manufactured segment. Orchestral undertones are also made identifiable, pushing forward between each twisting loop of bass. ‘Data Husk’ is a nod to Machine Cult’s moody underbelly, proving just how deep the producer can go. ‘Tech Priest’ is the final cut on the EP’s track listing. With pulsing bass and clinking, metallic breaks, diced up, robotic samples are planted at articulated intervals, helping to open up the track’s menacing backdrop. Reminiscent of the old-school, darkly lit rollers which made drum & bass so infamous, Machine Cult proves he knows his history. Not only is this another pivotal signing for Kosen, but it’s also an exciting new installation for the whole drum & bass community.

IBENJI makes his OTHERCIDE RECORDS debut with the BLAST OFF EP as he brings a set of diverse halftime selections to the label. Hailing from Moscow, IBENJI’s history spans nearly 10 years of two step influence, marked first by dubstep releases on labels such as Rottun Recordings and Section 8 and followed by more recent halftime works on labels such as Uplink Audio & LA90 Music. Throughout this diverse history of releases IBENJI’s sound has been marked by a unique hip hop influence, a trend continued on the BLAST OFF EP across its four powerful tracks.

The titular BLAST OFF opens the EP in collaboration with SHIIRU as the pair set the sounds of a sinister hip hop vocal provided by T3ARZ to a halftime beat that lumbers with absolute bravado. MODEL 315 then experiments upon its electrified bassline, warping it between an array of drum fills and devastating kickdrums interspersed with vocal interjections. SHIIRU returns to collaborate with IBENJI once more on SHINOBI, which rises from inauspicious origins to produce the razor sharp slices of a well honed bass that cuts through the track’s shadowy atmosphere with exacting precision. Closing the EP is the energetic FLOW, which leaps its way through a landscape of chopped vocals, rumbling basses and explosive percussion for a final summation of the EP’s focal qualities.

With BLAST OFF, IBENJI brings his uniquely accented halftime to OTHERCIDE RECORDS, continuing in the growth of the label’s ever expanding horizons within the larger drum & bass scene.
