Directions by Dj Essential-i is a valiant comeback and solid mission statement backed by American songstress Samantha Faison and SA's Vuky J and Nativeroots. This cut changes hands three times with the Nativeroots Main Vocal Mix, Vuky J's Soulful Vocal Mix and Nativeroots dub with the charm of Samantha Faison flowing without sounding gimmicky. 

The EP is too heavy and provides an optimistic jolt to the contemplative proceedings and also fits well within the nostalgic premise. An instant classic supported by the likes of QB Smith, The Advocate and Vinny Da Vinci. A great job well done of setting a high standard to the South African House scene with cascading drums, funky guitars, gentile piano keys and soothing strings to the mix, establishing an unexpectedly classical and groovy blend. It all adds up to one impressive EP, especially since Essential-i has been in silence for the past 2 years.

Essential-i has done great things after all.

DTR018 Essential - I Feat Samantha Faison - Directions (Nativeroots Edition)

High energy 80s synthwave dance track! Main idea is an F minor chord progression with 80s synths like the Casio CZ. I wanted it punchy but not too bottom heavy, dynamic but predictable enough to dance to, optimistic but not cheesy. Get in the spaceship and explore the Hidden Planet!

F Minor. 124bpm. -8.5 LUFS.

Production notes:
- 909 kick for a bit of a techno foundation
- Bass is an Oberheim SEM emulation
- Not many drums going on. A snare, fast hat, and an open hat. There are so many synth layers, I felt like additional drums weren't needed
- The leads come from a Casio CZ emulation. A cult 80s pop sound!
- There is a fast midrange bass that comes in later in the song, which is a Sylenth (a modern virtual synth)
- Background pads come from a Synclavier emulation, another early digital synth
- Throughout, loads of saturation, tape delay, etc for a vintage feel

Hidden Planet

Melodic techno track with orchestral and trippy vibes. Evokes the feeling of being in a dark forest. Things seem tense, brooding. Rain sets in to clear the mist. Thunder comes to release the energy! 

What I love most about this track: it tells a story, evokes the forces of nature, and is unapologetic.

What began as a post on Facebook of a brief snippet of a song that I started became a true labor of love. DJ Basil after viewing the video came up with the hook, and the lyrics followed. An international labor of love inspired by our friend, mentor and muse...the great DJ Frankie Knuckles. The collaboration process was truly inspirational, it included our sister Taclan Gorgun in Istanbul. Basil across the country 3,000 miles away in California, and myself in New York City. The song is entitled "Frankie's Heaven" and 25% of the proceeds will go directly to the "Frankie Knuckles Foundation".

Ali has shared the bill with more than 250 DJ’s including: Francois K, Nicky Siano, DJ Spinna, Kamala, Justin Carter, Spinderella, Hector Romero, Eli Escobar, Justin Paul and many others. 

A NYC Nightlife Advocate along with a motley crew of New York’s creatives from many backgrounds, organized and brought historic change in 2017; helping to repeal the NYC Cabaret Law.

Ali has dedicated his life to being a positive community connector with a flair for bringing people together.
