MAUGLI (@mauglimau) made loads of friends during his past travels, outputs & thoughts on global beat music. Arguing about cultural reconstruction is something we do not leave in the comment areas, we prefer to deal with it in our studios. So did MAUGLI with his genre-bending "Alba" release of the year 2021. Six ambitious musicians were hired to reconsider the organic sounds of "Alba" from yet another background.

There’s just something about stringed instruments that touches our shaken souls, embraces them, lifts them up and tosses them around until we lose track of time and space. Some people experiment with psychedelics to reach that effect, you really just need ears though. Not to say they won’t subsidize, but that’s a matter for another time.

Put those strings into context, give them space to breathe, support them with a rhythmic backbone, throw in a metaphorical surfboard and they will call themselves “ali dada”.
The swiss/intergalactic formation consisting of Orlando Ludens, mfjaeger and Max Licht join our little trip sitting outlet with their soothing “empa nada” EP.

Reminiscent of surf rock and shoegaze from the golden days, taken into the future with some modular goodness and further musical machinery, the trio delivers four timeless pieces of cosmic proportions. Nothing seems rigid here, rules don’t apply, a sense of improvisation hangs in the room, even after the last bar fades. Music for melting into your couch, or getting your first sunburn of the season, as well as putting another log into the fireplace.
Timeless, as I mentioned earlier.

And if that wasn’t enough, we’ve added four ingenious takes on those originals, ranging from even dubbier shores right onto the dancefloors. The bands own mfj goes first with a mind bending extension of “lauf”, handing the torch over to beat breaking Chewlie who deconstructed “empa nada”, followed by a weird house take on “sofaul” from our dearest Fereinwonung Koratien, who contributed the wildly trippy artwork as well, finished off with a definite stomper twist of “late” by IroniMo who wouldn’t take any chances.

Cosmopolitanism is creeping into the bedroom studios of producers worldwide.
Romanski is another agent evolving transcultural hybrids, which blend from retained folkways to modern aged club grooves.
A mixture of electronic beats in a rigid machine order and handmade organic moments woven together to form an eclectic sound. With a bit of drama, the hamburg based dj & producer Romanski, invites you on a diverse journey with his unique vision of club music.
Balearic groove patterns accompanied by repetitive bongo motives & dimmed synth themes flow along the 4 tracks (2 of them featured on 7" vinyl) of this EP. The title track "Karma Calling" is a passionate homage to Mulatu Astatke, "Tagh Tagh" is surrounded by an Iranian children’s song, "Gaugin" features a Tahitian vocoder line about the french painter and on "Ants" Romanski reflects on lyrics that came to him when resident at a sanatorium years ago.
Romanski is using his custom sound range & tools to express his downbeat grooves in this well balanced release. Hide below or turn around the umbrella with devotion and delight.

After sampling him on my track Ekara Po, here is an edit of one of my favorite songs of african electronic music pioneer Francis Bebey. He is one of my heroes, a true inspiration, and his "Sanza Tristesse" is a song that can literally make me cry from melancholy and sadness. But it is at the same time a heartwarming tune calling for love and joyful memories of lost ones, a soothing song for our fragile human hearts. And it made me think, why not bring these ambivalent emotions on a dance floor, as dancing puts you in special receptive moods? I hope you will hear my love for this song, enjoy!

Wieviel ist dir Zivilcourage wert?

In Basel wurde eine Aktivistin zu acht Monaten Gefängnis verurteilt, ohne Bewährung. Unter dem Motto «Basel Nazifrei» stellten sich damals rund 2000 Personen einer rechtsextremen Kundgebung in den Weg. Der Aufmarsch konnte so vereitelt werden, ein wunderbarer und wichtiger Erfolg gegen rassistisches Gebahren.

Verurteilt wurde die Frau nun wegen «Landfriedensbruch» sowie der «passiven Teilnahme an mehrfacher Gewalt und Drohung gegen Beamte». Dabei hatte die Staatsanwaltschaft ihr selbst kein gewalttätiges Handeln vorgeworfen; bestraft wurde sie dafür, dass sie sich nicht rechtzeitig von der Kundgebung entfernt haben soll.

Das ungewöhnlich harte Urteil gegen eine junge Frau ohne Vorstrafen markiert den bisherigen Höhepunkt: Gerade werden rund um «Basel Nazifrei» Urteile fast im Akkord gefällt. Insgesamt laufen derzeit sechzig Verfahren gegen mutmassliche TeilnehmerInnen des antifaschistischen Protests.

Etliche Demonstrierende wurden nachträglich kriminalisiert. 
In der aktuell laufenden Prozessreihe in Basel sind bereits abschreckende Haftstrafen, Geldbussen und hohe Gerichtskosten verteilt worden. Viele Prozesse sind noch ausstehend. Für einige Angeklagte bedeutet dies eine Gefährdung ihrer Existenzgrundlagen.

Meet the Jones brothers. At the turn of the millennium, producers @leejones (Hefner) and Russell (Victor Malloy) were living and working closely together in London. Lee eventually moved to Berlin, became a resident at the Watergate club, and focussed on producing dance music. Russell founded a multi-sensory marketing agency; an experience which formed the basis of his recently published debut book, "Sense".

The pair had collaborated on various projects for Russell’s clients, creating sonic identities for concept cars by Bentley and Aston Martin, but in 2020, between their London and Berlin studios, they embarked on a new musical voyage which updates their earlier cinematic, jazz infused sound.

"Pablo" and "Dead Man" are odes to the brothers’ shared love of cinema, the 70’s and Ennio Morricone. Their palette is richly defined by dulcimer, distorted organ, harpsichord, tremolo guitar, whistling, wailing waifs, Wurlitzer and Tijuana brass, all slouched casually over steady downtempo rhythms.

Berlin's @mrux is known for an artistic whimsy that sees him stray from tough beats to downtempo Balearic psychedelia and even leftfield soundscapes. This time he provides "Pablo" with a cheeky groove and new melodic elements which grin menacingly like an outlaw revealing his golden teeth.
