Once widespread across the whole North Atlantic, the Great Auk had the misfortune to be easy to catch and useful to humans. As a consequence, by the beginning of the 19th century it had vanished from all but a few remote holdouts.
A large, flightless seabird, it was known by early European seafarers as the 'Penguin' (possibly from the Welsh or Breton 'pen gwyn'/'penn gwenn', meaning 'white head') and the unrelated Southern hemisphere species were later named for their resemblance to it.
On 3 June 1844, the last two confirmed specimens were killed on Eldey, off the coast of Iceland. A previous Icelandic sea stack stronghold, Geirfuglasker, was submerged during a volcanic eruption in 1830. Stac an Armin in the St Kilda archipelago is the last known location of a Great auk in the British Isles - it was caught, kept for a few days, then killed as a 'witch' in 1840. Funk Island, off the coast of Newfoundland, was home to tens of thousands up until the late 18th century.
