The Danish singer-songwriter, autoharp player, violinist, streetartist, poet and citizen of the world, Alice Rose, has played on everything you can imagine, from cello to ukulele, from big stages, like Roskilde Festivla to the streets and markets of Berlin. IN the past, she used a lot of samplers and drum machines as instruments, but is now ready with a 100% pure, handmade, handplayed, acoustic album.

„What To Do In The Rain“ is soft, harmonic, ambient and raw, a well done album where 12 songs weave a pattern of music and lyrics.

Alice Rose lives in Berlin. Here she makes a living playing on the streets. Torn and united, calm and wild, rich and poor, grey and colourful, metropolis and village, big and small. You can find it all here! Contrast meet, and the city is her mirror and at the same time her unruly, chaotic base, and the music is the place where she rests. With her clear and pitch-perfect voice, heartfelt lyricism and minmal sound, she has created a harmonic and inspiring while of music(not sure you can write that), in a world full of chaos.

When she moved ot Berlin in 2016, she began to play on the streets to pay for rent and connect with her audience, she got invited to play concerts, weddings, pubs, composed for modern dance pieces and festivals, tested her new songs in the thriving, international singer-songwriter community of the city. 
The easiset for her was to bring an acoustic instrument, the autoharp. Autoharp is an american instrument, used mainly in bluegrass and country music, and with it's angelic chord progressions, Alice has learned to play it beautifully. Together with her scandinavian voice: soft, raw, angelic, and her profound lyrics, she touches the listener straight in their core.

„What To Do In The Rain“ is played entirely with handmade instruments, and mastered on tape.

Bio:
Alice Rose is a Danish singer-songwriter, cosmopolitan media artist, viola player and tech nerd. She grew up playing the violin and singing in choirs, her favorite toy was an old tape recorder that her uncle gave to her and her siblings, and they would spend hors composing their own songs and radio showss.  She left her native Copenhagen at age 19 and lived Berlin, Prague, San Francisco and Amsterdam. At one point she settled in Cologne, where she got involved in electronic music and has been a featured artist on many techno collaborations, and is a skilled producer and DJ herself. She is also a producer of indie-pop 5 albums, has released several singles and Eps, and collaborated with musicians from all over the world. Now Alice has her musical base in Berlin.

I woke up and heard the atrologer, Pam Gregory say, in a podcast, "love is a fire", and it inspired me to record this.

The song unfolds as a poignant narrative, with the ALICE navigating the emotional aftermath of a breakup. Riding her scooter home from a lively party, she makes a pit stop at a 7-11 on a quiet night, seeking solace in a familiar comfort—rice noodles. In an unexpected twist of fate, she encounters a friend at the store, prompting a heartfelt conversation.
As the friend inquires about her well-being, the floodgates of emotion open, and she tearfully confesses the pain of her recent breakup, a raw and honest admission. With noodles in hand, she hoped to find temporary solace in their comforting familiarity. The friend, however, imparts a gentle wisdom, insisting that healing cannot be found at the bottom of a noodle bowl but rather within oneself.
In a tender moment, the two share a meaningful heart-to-heart, where the friend encourages her to embrace self-love and resilience instead of attempting to eat away her sorrows. The exchange is underscored by a compassionate hug, a silent acknowledgment of shared struggles and the strength to face them. As they part ways, the convenience store becomes a backdrop for a bittersweet chapter of their lives, each carrying their own burdens but now equipped with the understanding that true healing comes from within.
The music video was shot in thailand with Alice's friends as dancers and featuring the vocals of Cacao King. Acting in the video is Bill Parfit.

When I entered the S-bahn, I saw rows and rows of ladies with the same kind of hair and earrings and thought, “we don’t have these kinds of women in Denmark”. It was a small culture shock. This song is about growing up.

This is the first song I wrote for the album. I woke up one morning and it came out in one piece. It set the precedent for the autoharp sound, the instrument on which all these songs were written. It’s dealing with feeling stuck in the past. Being sentimental. Taking an honest look at what we as humans do. A song about being grateful for life and for what we have.

I noticed at one point that I was texting more and more with a friend, as opposed to actually meeting up. We increasingly text, instead of talk. I noticed all the misunderstandings that occured. This is a song about communication. About connecting, meeting, sharing. In real life.

I went to a Vegan supermarket and picked up a random magazine about the Berlin fashion week. It had all these interviews with fashion people telling why they chose to move to Berlin, with all their dreams and goals, they see this city as place to make them real.. It was so beautiful and to read!

Berlin is a magnificent metropole with many facets. People from all over the world come here to live out their creative dreams, it’s what makes this city a fantastic and inspiring place to be. But it’s also competitive and stressful. We love it, sometimes we hate it. Opposites meet and enrich each other. This song is an ode to Berlin, a celebration of art, creativity and freedom. We want freedom, we crave connection.

What to do when things fall apart? Personally, globally, emotionally. A melancholy, reflective mood. Personal to the universal. The small to the big. Courageously throwing yourself into the unknown, despite the fear.

01. What To Do In The Rain

About the song:
I started writing this song while travelling in India. I met a psychoanalyst who told me: “Alice, Life is a walk”. This sentence stuck in my head, and I started writing about that walk. So many questions. Trying to fathom, what is this life actually? It’s also a kind of mantra that I use sometimes, when I feel that the world is too crazy. I come back to the breath. Remind myself that I am alive. And grateful for this gift.
