Calling Rain Dry Drop

The exhibition Re-Membering Generation: 1990's LA Chicana/o/x Music is a multidisciplinary exploration that documents SHG's vibrant music scene and history in the 1990s. The exhibition will remain on view at The Boathouse Gallery at Plaza de la Raza from April 6-June 8, 2024. The gallery is open weekly Monday-Thursday from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and Saturdays, from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. 

Curated by Quetzal Flores, a Grammy award-winning musician/community historian, the exhibition pairs eight duets (a visual artist with a musician) to produce original songs and serigraph prints inspired by their conversations, reflections, and memories of the LA music scene of the late 90s. "For generations of musicians, Self Help Graphics has served as a rite of passage. A collective space of retreat, experimentation, re-membering regeneration," said Curator, Quetzal. 

The exhibition will feature ephemera serving as a window to this period alongside serigraph prints and music created by Rachel Negrete Thorson and Alice Bag, Marisol Torres and Gustavo Avina, Yolanda Gonzalez and Lysa Flores, Margaret “Quica” Alarcon and Quetzal Flores, Usen Gandara and Randy Rodarte, Wenceslao Quiroz and Raul Pacheco, Omar G. Ramirez and Tylana Renga, Jose Ramirez and Yaotl.

English Singles are a staple of Sacramento, CA's excellent DIY pop/punk scene. Featuring members of local legends The Bananas, Nar and Bright Ideas, English Singles mine a rich tradition of DIY pop that stretches from Swell Maps and The Television Personalities through to The McTells and The Sea Lions. Scratchy and home-made (but NOT lo-fi!), English Singles take pop back to the basics of catchy tunes, urgent guitars and sing-along choruses. Their live shows are frenetic and impassioned, with lead Single Scott Miller often seen wading into the crowd for some quality face-time with the fans.

Following up two fine singles on Slumberland and Squirmy, English Singles are back with this excellent three song EP. "Ordinary Girls" is a fine mid-tempo tune with a stick-in-your-head vocal melody and ace 12-string guitar leads. "Bitter End" is one of the band's earliest songs and live favorite, full of jittery guitars and rough-and-ready drums. The EP is rounded out by "Rain," a perfect slice of power-pop that clocks in at a brisk 1:53 but doesn't sacrifice anything in terms of energy, melody or excitement.


English Singles - Ordinary Girls

For everyone celebrating Cinco de Mayo, a song about heartache, seeing a former lover suffer and the sweetness of revenge. All you need is a bottle of good tequila. My punkchera version of Cuando El Destino by the great Jose Alfredo Jimenez.

Recorded at the Cold Cave studios in Philadelphia and produced by Wes Eisold.
