'From The Understory' is an exploration of our relationship with plants and our role in the ecosystems with live in. Created as part of my artist residency at the Eden Project, this collection of songs brings together the human voice, electronic textures created with plants and field recordings to tell the story of civilisation at a tipping point.

Separation

Over the last couple of years, Dutch artist Mitchel van Dinther has slowly but surely been picking up a cult following as Jameszoo. His releases on Rush Hour’s daughter label Kindred Spirits have been inventive affairs that marry jazz, electronica and hip hop aesthetics together into a fresh new style. In the club, he is a stellar DJ who already played Dekmantel Festival twice and paired up with The Gaslamp Killer. Next to that he is a performer who cooks up wholly improvised shows teaming up with the likes of Dorian Concept, Julian Sartorius, Binkbeats, and Gideon van Gelder while he also played together with The Roots frontman Questlove as part of the RBMA in New York. 

Jameszoo’s sound is curious and compelling and the world is keenly awaiting on his highly anticipated debut album. For a taster of what to expect, the Dutchman made a selection of recordings that inspired him in making his first LP.

For our first podcast I sat down with radio host, Dj and Open Access Zone member Simkin to discuss the state of radio in London at the moment, his DJ collective and their most recent booking Eris Drew. 

Some really interesting points were raised about the role of radio in supporting emerging artists, as well as giving a voice to marginalised communities. This is followed by a Simkin mix: tinges of techno, house and UKG, accumulating to an hour of that unique Open Access Zone sound.

Zaatari Radio 01: Simkin

Hunee stopped by Brilliant Corners on a cold Sunday in February for an unannounced six-hour set. Decked out with hanging ferns, floor cushions, an oil lamp and visuals by Cherrystones, the East London spot was even cosier than usual, and Hunee started out playing some of his favourites field recordings and experimental records, before slowly building the dance floor with his collection of music from around the globe.

Poltergeist Theatre are an emerging theatre company catching lot of attention at the moment, and winning all sorts of awards with their play Lights Over Tesco Carpark. They are a New Diorama Emerging Theatre Company, travelling around the UK at the moment with their play, eventually taking it to The Fringe this August, 2018.

Their accolades speak for themselves, and we’re very honoured to have been given the chance to speak with an incredibly talented emerging theatre company. Asides from their current play, and the forthcoming Fringe, it was very interesting to hear about their experiences in establishing a theatre company at a young age.
