The extensive new record ‘Café Kotti’ by Nick Klein & Wilted Woman arrives on Alien Jams as the first collaborative release from the duo. Recorded in one session, the 50 minute piece is the culmination of a long working relationship between the two artists. Berlin-based Wilted Woman - who previously released her ‘Home Listener’ EP on Alien Jams - collates her signature analogue electronics and glitch-ridden intricacies to the new explorative piece. Pairing up with Brooklyn artist and Primitive Languages co-founder Nick Klein (L.I.E.S., Alter, BANK Records), ‘Café Kotti’ was recorded during the performance ‘Program: Etc.’, an exhibition by Domingo Castillo on November 10, 2018 in Berlin. Broken up into two parts, the haunting A-side skews eerily under-surface melodies that interlace with feedback, winding loops and noise, whilst the B-side teases in dark rhythmic patterns and pulsating synths to create an intriguing atmosphere. As a result of the exhibition, the collaboration explores various themes:

The new release on Alien Jams is from London-based YAWS, titled ‘The Hollow Hum’, arriving as a follow up to his label debut last year. In opposition to the minimal aesthetic of ‘NEW’, the latest release takes a more chaotic approach, using noise, frenetic raw sounds and experimentation. Sonically representing the experience of time in various mind states, memories are used as if they were a graphic score. 'The Hollow Hum' navigates a history of phantasmagorical experiences, existing somewhere amidst lucid dream and skittish jam-out.

Another Café – the sophomore Café – following last year’s ‘Café Kotti’ tape sees Wilted Woman and Nick Klein back as a live electronics duo. Their second freeform performance took place at London’s Café Oto in September 2019 during an Alien Jams night. With more preparation but the same amount of looseness, the pair steer away from genre definition and self-importance, manipulating recordings from jam sessions, skillfully altering samples from various sources alongside modular synths patterns. The result ‘Cafe Music 2 : Werewolves Of London’ is a spellbinding flow of meditative drones, beatless rhythmic explorations and unsettling melodies.

Central to the duo’s process is carving out space to play and laugh with (and sometimes at) each other. The two friends have developed their own communication tactics for remote idea generation and exchange – Nick Klein is based in the Hague, with Wilted Woman in Berlin. This also allows them to perform live without imposing rigid structures onto the project.

The pair build upon each performance to create a world of their own which, in turn, should lead them to many more Cafés.

London-based Swedish producer aircode’s debut EP on Alien Jams is ‘basically a very tired EP’.

Written throughout a year of sleep deprivation, “Effortless” reflects a period of disorientation, social claustrophobia, and the unbridled feeling of a loss of focus. A navel-gazing introspective struggle of feeling apathetic and drowsy, yet simultaneously restless and constantly moving. Fractured machine fragments and riddled sleep-deprived speech alongside manipulated drum samples, distorted guitar, are symptomatic of her captivating work in electronic experimental music so far. Using self-generated ‘logical’ melodies, unexpected rhythms, and phone and vocal recordings, the EP offers a challenging, melancholic and ever-changing aesthetic.

Piecing together spontaneous text, and moments of glitch, like an anxious machine, or someone on auto-pilot; “the tracks represent this mixture of apathy and a scattered mind,” she explains, "On the verge of hyperventilation with constantly changing rhythms as you feel your heartbeat and breath loud and out of sync. The melodies are also somewhat dipping in energy," never reaching the whole way up, but giving up and falling down.
