Police In The Sky

Alien Nation is a four-piece band from the Bromley area of Greater London. Their music is a culmination of various personal influences and a desire to make totally original music that bears no similarity to current music trends. Their music is, at the very least, progressive.

Alien Nation began as an idea in guitarist/vocalist Luke Tomkins’ (Inertia, Eliminator Jr., Militant Flower, Star Machine, Interpret) head. After leaving punk/alternative group Militant Flower, Luke was lacking a musical outlet. In October 2008, Luke called together guitarist/vocalist Joey Flanagan (Highway Child, Star Machine), bass player Sean Lynch (Downward Spiral, The Awakened, Interpret) and drummer David Williams (Inertia, Eliminator Jr., Militant Flower) and proposed a new band be created. With the target of playing the University of Greenwich Battle of the Bands as a deadline, the four got together and began writing. Alien Nation was one of the many names supplied by the four, but was chosen for its ambiguity in meaning. It came from the word “alienation” which at the time described a lot about Luke’s life among other meanings (i.e. American's refer to immigrants as illegal aliens). The name settled on, the four came up with 5 songs in their early forms, and worked on them for weeks on end. As it turned out, they didn’t play the Battle of the Bands, so with the pressure lifted they went to Antenna Studios and recorded live demos of the 5 tracks. These demos were taken home and mixed for weeks. The vocals were recorded on top and mixed in, and these tracks culminated Alien Nation’s eponymous EP.

With these tracks and more new ones coming out of the wood work, Alien Nation set about booking various performances. Their debut show was at Catch club in Shoreditch. They then played at Dialekt’s (local/national MC/DJ) Bank Holiday Birthday Bash supporting the almighty metal/funk group Silas who have since gone on to win a slot at Bloodstock 2010 festival. After these performances, the band had established its explosive and energetic stage presence and is known for being unpredictable and very entertaining. Unfortunately, this was their last performance with bass player Sean, who left on good terms. Luckily, help was at hand as Luke’s brother Krist Tomkins filled the position very well. After self recording, mixing and producing their debut album "No Phun Intended", the band went on a mini tour in support of it, playing their first headline show at The Railway Hotel, Bromley, and releasing it on their own imprint Star Machine Records. After playing shows such as The Comedy Pub, Leicester Square, and Tunbridge Wells' The Forum, the band had accumulated newer material and it was time to go into the studio for real.

The band met with mutual friend and producer Alex Eyers with 5 new songs and they spent the next year cooped up in Shrewsbury Road Studios, emerging only to play a show or two. Also during this period, Luke took it upon himself to completely revamp "No Phun Intended" by re-recording parts of it and fully re-mixing it. The new "No Phun Intended" Deluxe Edition garnered some attention and Newcastle indie champions Maximo Park hailed it as "very cool". The 5 new tracks were worked upon and over the course of a year's work, the recordings came to fruition and a name was given to what was being called a mini-album as opposed to an EP. "Hypernova" is Alien Nation's take on what an EP should actually be. They themselves have described it as a concept EP. "Hypernova" is now in it's post-production stages and will be released during late June/early July 2010.
