The essence of psychedelia is disrupting expectations and altering perspectives - what better place to do so than in the vortex of the rave? 

It was an incredible honor to be a part of the inaugural edition of System Activate. The entire weekender campout rave was an exercise in intentionality, a generous labor of love with visionary execution. Anchored by a single stage with a pristine sound system, brought to life by a seasoned, die-hard-DIY team, and animated with an incredibly unpretentious, open-minded, and imaginative crowd of ravers, System Active was truly a novel, eye-opening adventure that struck real sparks of psychedelic inspiration. 

I believe this is one of the finest sets that I have played to date. Completely at ease in the booth, I played fervently and completely from the heart. This is a totally honest and unrestrained rendition of my creative screwball sensibilities as a DJ, conjuring a propulsive rhythmic tunnel and peeling away into moments of whiplash slack-jawed surprises. Rooted in wormhole-traversing techno but stretching well into psychedelic sludge, shameless sentimentality, poignant lessons, heaving bass-weight, and references to formative personally-precious material, this is a completely earnest translation of my psyche that also incorporates the work of friends and peers. 

It was a deep joy to be in the company of so many brilliant and clever dancefloor scramblers and dear friends as I landed us in dawn's first light. I am deeply grateful for this experience, and excited to share this transmission from the vortex.

Furtive live at System Activate 2025

Have I been to Amara? Like anyone who has, I’ve no way of knowing for sure. 

I am told she is wrapped in a blue-grey fog that extends like an aura for miles in all directions. As certain kinds of fog have a way of doing, it only makes itself known to you when you are already well within its grasp. At best, the traveller may remember entering and exiting the hazy periphery of this city, but whatever comes to pass within is impossible to recall, and one can only recognize signs in the traces it leaves behind in the mind and body. This may be as subtle as a change in the way you speak, as disquieting as an unaccountable bruise or scrape on the skin, or as drastic as a sudden change in the length of your hair. 

Recently, lovers have told me that my way in bed has somehow changed, that the color of my eyes has grown cooler and softer. Flavors that I once detested are now among my most cherished. Certain objects or images — a marble figurine, a drop of blood hanging from a small cut on my finger, a glass bowl shot through with broken sunlight — have stirred up in me the faintest and most curious ecstasy. It is as though, by some association conjured in these moments, I behold not a memory in itself but the effects it has on everything around it, the lines of sentiment that ripple across the waters of my mind from the invisible impression of an unknown stone.

A city will change you, slowly in time, in ways you may not notice as they set in. But what if the city that changes you is not so much a place as a strange and beautiful void, one that quietly haunts the heart, and from which no memory can escape?

"City Diaries" is a refection on our city lives, a daily imaginary journey that invites us to
introspection. Te world of sound that surrounds us is experienced in a unique way by
each and every one of us, yet we all share it.
Each stroll is unique, each moment unique.
It's up to us to make these situations our own, to build our own dream cosmology.
Considering the creative power of what surrounds us as a tool for inner construction, as
poetry, is a response to our materialistic lives and can help us better apprehend the
modern world.
True to Gaston Bachelard, the aim here is to give free rein to daydreaming, while at the
same time giving full artistic expression to the noise of our times, an essential concept
developed by Luigi Russolo.
City Diaries was composed from sounds collected at night in my city (Chalon sur
Saône), which gave rise to an imaginary vocabulary for this acousmatic piece.
Our sound context is a refection of our times, and it's up to us to seize it and, like
modern alchemists, appropriate one of the last things that is free - noise - and transform
it into a work of art. Fortunately, it's one of the last things we have free access to.

City Diaries a été composé à partir de sons collectés de nuit dans ma ville (Chalon sur
Saône) qui ont donné naissance à un vocabulaire imaginaire permettant de construire
cette pièce acousmatique.
Notre contexte sonore est le refet de notre époque, à nous de nous en emparer pour, tels
des alchimistes modernes, s'approprier une des dernières choses qui soit gratuite -le
bruit- et le transformer en oeuvre artistique. C'est heureusement une des dernière chose
qui soit nous accessible librement.

Description:
Dodecahedrons, frequency modulation (FM) networks, free tuning of hardware synthesisers and the sounds of a forest at dusk all come together in this suit, Dusk.

The title is inspired from that magic time when daylight begins to give way to darkness -- dusk. The insects begin to sing,
the forest becomes alive with other sounds. Dusk is an imagined journey into the forest at dusk.

1: Dusk Movement 1
The sun has set, the wind has calmed down, insects and creatures of the forest come out to sing. A normally quiet time except for the chorus from the forest that is slowly building up. A time to reflect on life. In German, we call it the Dämmerstuendchen, a time to sit in semi darkness as light from the sun fads, complemented by sip of a good Australian red wine with a friend. The nocturnal creatures begin to wake and say hello to each other, the bats, owls and possums. 

2: Dusk Movement 2
A distant rhythm of drums are heard, the Cicadas. The birds from tree tops have their brief say. The crickets decide to join in again. Possums scurry from tree to tree. A sugar glider sweeps past.

3: Dusk Movement 3
A breeze picks up, the din of the insects give way to singing trees.

4: Dusk Movement 4
The wind stirs some more, swirling into the caves, awaking the bats, emerge from the cave, flying into the forest.

5: Dusk Movement 5
The wind dies down. The crickets emerge again, the owls fly past. The trees cover the forest in a comforting blanket. Nocturnal marsupials looking for morsels. All settle back to their nests before the sun rises again.

This project has been on the building books and sketch books for a while now. It all started with someone posting an article on the "Mathematical Tiling and Tessellation" FaceBook group about five side shapes (Pentagon) in nature. I was then curious about networking several of these Pentagons for a tuning system, turns out you can connect twelve of these to form a closed surface called a dodecahedron. A very common musical scale in Western music uses twelve notes equally dividing the octave. I started a music project using a scale based upon twelve notes printed on a paper dodecahedron, the notes you would see as you rotated the dodecahedron, that project is still ongoing. This led on to thoughts about how such a shape could lead to a physical instrument -- more trials, more ruminations during my exercise walks. Now, fast forward to Nov/Dec 2025, the pentagon was reduced to a triangle and the closed surface of the dodecahedron was reduced to an open surface triangulation with one pocket.

Eight triangles, eight vertices. My Push2 midi controller, has eight main rotary encoders and eight columns of note pads. An FM synthesiser at it's core has three inputs, a carrier frequency, modulation amplitude and frequency of modulation. Can you see the pattern? The triangles form the topology of the FM synthesis sound generation, the surface the human machine interface. The Push2 as the prototype.
