Kerrie started a label called Dark Machine Funk, a name which hints toward the kind of music she plays. And while the Irish artist might be a capital-T techno DJ, her idea of "dark" is a little different than the black-clad legions of her generation. You won't find whiplash-inducing BPMs or racy pop edits in her sets. Her idea of techno is more classicist, without veering towards the stuffy or the retro. Her DJIng and her productions bridge the divide between Euro and  American styles. Hints of breakbeat or other broken patterns bring in ideas from the UK techno that she loves so much, such as the pivotal label Blueprint, where she's become a regular  as of late.

With her, the devil's in the details (listen to those deliciously twisted hi-hats in recent track "Transient Belief"), and that comes down to mixing records, too. Her RA Podcast is a fast but measured run-through of 90 minutes of techno by artists like Exium and Tensal and from labels such as Token and Soma. Though none of her own tunes make the tracklist, this mix perfectly captures Kerrie's style. She's someone who appreciates that the real power and force of techno comes from its groove, not just the impact of the kick drum or pure speed.

We premiere new music from Cork native Kerrie as she returns to her Dark Machine Funk imprint for its 4th release. We feature ‘Low End Behaviour’, a trembling bass-heavy techno weapon that leans cut-throat modular synth work and stomping percussive grooves.

Cork native, Manchester based Kerrie returns to her Dark Machine Funk imprint with a four-track EP in her analogue techno style with industrial sounds and dystopian atmosphere. The latest release follow’s up two releases on James Ruskin‘s Blueprint label.

Already a respected DJ who plays regularly across Europe and other parts of the world, she has played everywhere from Berghain in Berlin to the Freedom Medellín festival in Colombia. Kerrie has also been showcasing her art is a live capacity as she swaps the decks for hardware synthesisers and drum machines.

We premiere ‘Low End Behaviour’ from her latest offering on Dark Machine Funk. The brooding techno tool see’s Kerrie go deep into her modular set-up, creating kaleidoscopic resonant leads, syncopated shuffles and jerking percussive hits. This teeth-grinding techno groove is made for murky basements.

2hi2 is a Pakistani Drum ‘n’ Bass vagus-nerve-scratcher that comes as a collaboration between underground DJ and producer, MALIK. and indie alt-pop singer, musician and ethnomusicologist, Natasha Noorani. The title of the track is a phonetic pun: in Urdu, the words “Tu Hee Tu,” loosely translate as “Only You,” and serve as the track’s hook and thematic center. 

The track leads in with the vocal hook, fuzzy synths, and a distant woodwind warble, establishing a dreamy and textured space at the top before a low pass breakbeat kicks in propelling the song forward. This rich surge of stimulation then cedes to give way to a jittery bassline and supplicating verses to a beloved, sung in Noorani’s smoke signal of a voice. 

MALIK.’s signature glitch-ridden, stimulant production style is soulful here for all its frenzy, drawing comparisons with Nia Archives or Machinedrum. He blends the sinewy smoothness of old school Jungle, the frenetic energy of D’n’B, and the stimulating glitchiness of modern breakcore on the track. Noorani’s pleaful vocal melodies evoke old-school and contemporary Urdu pop alike; she often references these styles in her own alternative electro-pop work (she refers to it as Lolly-pop, a nod to old film music from Pakistan’s film industry, casually referred to as Lollywood).

2hi2 swells and tapers dramatically, keeping listeners on their toes. With its flourishes, lavishly layered sound, and surprising turns, 2hi2 is a club-floor-shaker-upper that encapsulates the unique timbres of two of the strongest artistic voices within the Lahori underground.
