3 Shades is a collective of musicians (and guests) that one could call a "Supergroup". Based in and around Munich/Germany the group was founded 9 years ago. Famous for their rare but exciting live performances it was just a question of time before they released their debut album. And they had time. But now the waiting is over and "Thank God For Beatniks" is ready to enter/penetrate your ears.
Maybe it's some kinda jazz. But spelled wrong and with other results. Maybe it's a quest for all the promises made about music and freedom.
"Thank God For Beatniks" is not an answer to all these subjects, but 3 Shades asks the right questions.

With his latest record, Notwist singer & guitar player, film soundtracker and label boss Markus Acher, aka Rayon, offers up a sparse, intoxicating LP of instrumentals.
As the name suggests, the spaces between notes here are treated with as much gravity as the notes themselves – arpeggios spiralling upwards, conflicting yet interlocking in a dizzying overlap of time signatures.
An obvious reference point is Javanese gamelan, with its ensemble of hand-beaten metallophones and bamboo flutes, pulling in all directions at once and yet, like a starling murmuration, maintaining shape as one, rippling whole.
Eschewing electronic equipment, the title track sees marimbaphone, piano and vibraphone appearing to mimic a delay pedal, giving the effect of rain falling with odd regiment into a singing bowl.
This melancholy but weirdly uplifting arrangement surfaces throughout the record, punctuated by mossy synth hums and subterranean rustling. Like much of Rayon’s work, “A Beat of Silence” beams across like a soundtrack for some forgotten documentary: dusty archive footage of cities being built and eroded in time-lapse seeming to flicker across the screen.

Closing tracks “To the Quiet”, a tentative, almost impossibly fragile ballad, and “Kona”, a stretched and mangled wash of orchestral drone akin to Plinth or Edmund Finnis, leave the listener fully enveloped, as this incredibly sensitive work draws to a close.

Our friend Misha Shkurat introduced us to Florian Zimmer, the musician behind Driftmachine and Saroos (currently working on new albums in both projects) living in Berlin. The man has a great record collection and the mix he recorded for us is inspired by the nights at now-defunct Neu Bar in Berlin where he played alongside Monique (Sonic Pieces) and Erik (Miasmah Records) the widest range of music: Japanese weirdos, cosmic kraut, gaze haze, whiskey hits & more. «It’s a very mood-driven mix featuring some records I came back to quite often this year like You Have Already Gone to the Other World by A Hawk and a Hacksaw or African Skies by Kelan Phil Cohran And Legacy as well as some new discoveries like Illtet (Mike Ladd has one of those voices I can listen to forever) or Köln – February 23, 1975 a stunning recording by Don Cherry, Terry Riley and Karl Berger, which has been very inspiring while working on new music».
