Jazsalyn is the creative and curatorial Director of black beyond, a radical space for artists and activists to define alternate realities for Blackness. As an anti-disciplinary artist, she combines new media and community organizing practices to reimagine Black futures and to decolonize and re-indigenize social and creative practice. Her work has been featured in CULTURED Magazine, Vogue, The New Yorker, and Huffington Post.

Jazsalyn was interviewed for today’s episode by Michelle McCrary.  Michelle is a daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin, mother, wife, and friend who lives on occupied Duwamish land in the Pacific Northwest.  She has roots in Coastal Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.  When she's not leading the Communications team at Esalen, she's training to become a facilitator with the Healing and Reconciliation Institute, tending to her winter garden, reading her way through a massive pile of books on her nightstand, and working on the screenplay for her horror anthology.

A New Way To Experience Esalen

I AM A DOPE MC came out the Cypher Workshop series I organized at Hi-Arts in East Harlem. The participating MC's were not only doing the Freestyle Union Cypher Workshop exercises but developing as performers for our first Rap Recital. I wasn't sure how they would respond to the idea of affirmations but they loved it. Before that, I was always hesitant to niche my niche so specifically but I ended up creating a series of meditations for artist development. I'm looking forward to sharing them with the world. Hip Hop artists need support and tools to help them in the process of identifying their own voices and staying true to them.

I AM A DOPE MC - Toni Blackman Affirmations

Inspired by and in collaboration with the work of Isabel Friend, my soul-sister and Earthkeepers Wisdom School visionary Carolyn Griffeth invited me to catch a song for a ritual to bless, enoble and restructure  Water.  The words of this ceremony are inspired by the work of groundbreaking Japanese water researcher Dr. Emoto, who discovered the words water likes best.   

"We thank you water.  
We love you water. 
We respect you water. 
You are Life!"

So I went for a hike to Kickapoo State Park and asked the waters there (a pond, post coal-mine) for a song. This simple mantra came as a response ~ a basic matrix to hold the embellishment of your harmony and the power of your prayers.  May our attention and our love support the restoration, vitality, & healing power of living Water.
