Gullible Girl (Acoustic)

This is my favorite song of all time.  At the time I wrote this, I was feeling very lonely.  I hadn't found true love, and I compared the long wait for love to an Alaskan winter, cold and dark, with only a few hours of daylight per day. My sister was an overnight disc jockey at a radio station, thus the line "sister, play me some good ol' rock and roll,"  

The winter finally ended when I met my future husband, about four years after I wrote this song. 

Long Cold Winter

This sweet little song really captures the beauty of the sea and the washing of the waves.  I wrote this at the beach, of course, during a time when I thought I had found true love.  Well, true love it wasn't, but the happy feel of the beats in this song captures the happiness that I felt at the time.

Sand

This is the demo version of a song that I have re-recorded in the studio.  It is a dance of love, hope, and joy.  

Sunset Dancer (Demo)

This song is infinitely stronger in a live setting.  It should feel like the kind of song you should have sex to, but this version is a bit rough around the edges.   I do hope to re-record this song. 

Thrill Me

This song attempts to capture a Latin feel with a single looping conga reel.  Doesn't really help the song too much, but it was helpful for me to teach my band members the feel of the song by providing this recording to them.

Break

An improvised jam session put this beautiful 12/8 song into motion.  The song was never really completed, so I hope to one day re-record it and capture the feeling that this jam has.

With The Sun Is A Brighter Day

I once dated a man 8 years younger than me.  I was 29, he was 21.  He was so sexy.  In the dictionary, next to gorgeous, would be his photo.  Suffice it to say he didn't turn out to be the one.  Too temperamental.  But he did inspire me to make this song, a song of lust.

Boy Like 2 Love

This great acoustic song is really powerful live, and I was really thrilled that we could capture quite a bit of that live feel in this recording.  

The song was written while I lived in a studio apartment in Chicago.  I was working as an Intern at the fabulous Steppenwolf Theater Company, and since I was an intern, I was broke as smoke.  I had nowhere to go and nothing to do except play my guitar in my room and sing.  

And then something funny happened.  My neighbors knocked on my door.  I thought I was bothering them with my playing.  Instead of asking me to keep it down, they asked to come in and sit and listen to me play.  I was more flattered than I had ever been in my life.

Killing Time

This fun, bluesy song was totally based on a joke.  I know you want to know what joke, so here it is: 

There's 3 women sittin' on a bench, talkin' about their men.  
The first one says, I like to call my man slow and smooth, 'coz that's what he is, slow and smooth. 
The second one says, I like to call my man fast 'n dirty, 'coz that's what he is, fast and dirty. 
The third one says, I like to call my man Drambuie. 
The other two women look at her and say, Drambuie?  What the hell's that, some kind of fancy liquor?
That's my man.

My Man

This fun little poppy song was conceived within months of our wrapping up recording on the album. The band thought it was such a fun, catchy little tune that I really should include it on the album, so I did.  This is a lot of fun to play live, and we get the audience to sing along with the chorus nearly every time.

Tonight

This ballad needed to be written at a time when, yet again, I had thought I'd found the one, but it was only lust.  I wanted it to be so much more.  I knew we couldn't continue the affair we had been having for two years. It was a hopeless situation that was bound to end.  Still, I begged him not to go.  After all, he was all I had.

Stay

A live acoustic version of a powerful song of mine, plus what amounted to the bonus track off of the album.  The first song was a product of my (accidentally) falling in love with a gay man.  No future there.  The bonus song is rather a warped lullaby to a baby never born.  The sounds heard at the start of the song were the sounds I often heard falling asleep in my studio apartment in Chicago.

This is an incredible live song.  This demo kinda captures some of that fun, but I think I can do better.

This is the After Iris session of Blue, a little funky pop song.   

Blue - After Iris Sessions

A powerful song about a loved one going off to war.  I tried to capture the conflict that army wives must feel, for example, when they pass by picketers of war.  On the one hand, you have to stand by your man/woman because they are fighting for their country.  On the other hand, war stinks.

Recorded with my band After Iris, this demo track was created to get us gigs.  We never did play live, but we had fun playing together while it lasted.

Signs - After Iris Sessions

This is a rehearsal (a VERY rough draft!) with my now defunct band After Iris.  This version is quite smooth & cool.   It's ROUGH, but it does give you an idea of where this song could go in the future.  I'm playing keyboards, and Eric Happe is on guitar. 

Preacher Down

A hopefully not too irreverent version of a classic.  The recording features Kevin Cole on piano, Pete the bass player, and myself on vocals.  Recorded by the always amazing Maia Fedderly  at the Royal George Theater cabaret, 1995. 

Silent Night

Hi there, thanks for stopping in.  My roots are in pop, but my soul is in the blues.  I often run the two together in my music, but I also enjoy the good story, like music by Kate Bush.  The lush instrumental chords that Pink Floyd is known for has also influenced some of my stuff, as has the good ol' rock and roll of Led Zeppelin.  Acoustic beauty is born from Sting, the Indigo Girls, and maybe a little Coldplay.  The references to love, water, ice, strength, endurance, and vengeance are all mine.
