I wrote this one last week, and spent all day thinking about recording and tonight I recorded it haha. It's a shame I can't mix well yet, but this is the very raw version of it. I'll upload a better mixed version when I've learnt a thing or two :)

“It really is another world. 6 weeks hitching and camping alone around her was ample time to fall in love with that land and this song is a representation of that love,”Alisha says of her inspirational travel. 

Recorded in her hinterland home studio at Belli Bunya Studios and mixed by the genius of Scott French at Lovestreet Studios in Currumbin, Gold Coast, the collaboration continues with the stunning lyric video cut by Dylan Isaiah (England), featuring imagery from Norwegian photographer, Kenneth McDowell. Stay tuned in the near future to witness this collaboration online. 

“I was hitching to the Landmannalaugar 4-day hike and was dropped off in an Icelandic desert by a Polish truck driver. The next person to pick me up had to be going where I was going, there was only one destination from there and it happened to be Kenneth who took me there! We were both enthralled with the land… it’s like we were destined to create something together to show how beautiful that island is,” Alisha Todd.

Fresh from supporting internationally acclaimed rhythm and beats outfits Wild Marmalade and Band Of Frequencies, Alisha Todd’s first single from her forth-coming EP “Make Believe” will be available on all streaming platforms January 31st.

So I went to watch the Joker movie and freakin loved it. Everything about it thrilled me! I've recently studied a music video unit at University so I was really paying so much more attention to the small details, like lighting, angles, casting, everything.

I was feeling super nostalgiac last night after a conversation with a friend of a friend who was on a travel/discovery/throw yourself into the wind stage of life and it got me thinking about the time I sold all my s### 5 years ago and went to do the same thing in Europe. After 6 months of travelling around Europe's beautiful landscapes, I rested in Bristol, England, where I discovered some of the most beautiful humans, community and the most thriving art scene I had ever known. Bristol became my home for 1-2 years.

I think it was the first time in my life I had actually connected, or allowed myself to connect, to people. There is a real beauty in living somewhere where no one knows you or expects you to be something... this allows YOU to not expect anything of yourself, except to survive of course. Which was really difficult at times! I definitely did some immoral things that the 'now Alisha' wouldn't even consider, seen things that I wouldn't want any of my nieces or nephews to see, but..."all the grime that we see becomes the drive that we need to keep our minds free".

While living in Bristol, I lived so closely with my friends, making music in the lounge room because it felt good, playing gigs for nothing because we were so happy to just be playing together on a stage. It definitely wasn't sustainable as a career but DAM IT FELT GOOD! Sometimes (moreso than what they have you believe) you just have to do things because they feel good. Having now moved back to Australia and settled into the daily grind of the music business here (that's another post that I'll probably never post) with lots of friends doing the same thing, I see that those moments of true freedom can come and go so fast, as do the connections with people that milk it out of you.

This song was one that I played with a group of the best gals in Bristol, self-dubbed the Mermaids (ha!) or Furmaids, whichever you prefer. We arranged it in our friend Felix's room, who had just had it graffiti-ed bright orange and black with some cool monkeys moping around on the walls (Bristol, don't ask). Of course this recording I made is missing saxophone, played by Sabrina our adopted, bad-ass, Italian horn section. As time passes and I see their statuses constantly changing online (even having babies yeww!), I realise that time really does just keep on passing and good moments can never be the same twice. Never be the same twice. Treasure the moment friends. Now listen to the song dammit, I made it with love for ya.

Turn Your Lights Down Low - Bob Marley (Alisha Todd cover)

Wowzas, this weekend has been a pretty fantastic conglomeration of positive musical experiences. It's so nice to feel naturally high off the things you love to do and from being and creating with the people you love in your life. This beautiful song came on Spotify when I was driving back home from a wedding in Byron. I'm a massive fan of this lady. After playing a couple of gigs with my band Volcanic Lovers and feeling so content, Aurora's voice and spirit shone through and almost made me drive off the road. I'm fine, and here is a very late night/is-this-even-an-hour version of her song.

Chaos is a powerful synth-driven lament for the current social and natural crises. It paints a hopeful future to cling to and says all the things that fill your conscience and are bursting to dance off the tip of your tongue.

Chaos is a reaction to the approval of the Adani Charmichael Mine in Australia in June 2019. After 9 years of planning, fierce protests Australia-wide and endless political debate, the Australian Government approved Adani's mining plans which could very well be the destroyer of one of the world's last remaining desert oases, The Doongmabulla Springs Complex, amongst many other implications that could negatively affect the beautiful land and nature's rhythm and the lives of the Traditional Custodians of the land, as well as us city folk. It was a sad day indeed.

The thought provoking lyrics intertwine with a driving, infectious beat that rises and releases in tension, taking you on a journey outside into a world of possibility and uplifting wander.

It's thought provoking in the current global climate when we finally have the time to take a step back, breathe and ponder if we are on the journey that is truly fulfilling us. Time is an elusive character in all of our stories. For me it started to feel like days were disappearing as our lives became more and more busy, which can induce so much fear and anxiety as we feel like our time as humans will be up if we slow down. But now that we are coming to a slow idle, time also seems to have slowed and perhaps this gives us an extremely rare chance to re-evaluate what is actually important to us and put our eggs in that basket.

I recorded this song in my room. I played everything (except the weird jazzy sounding guitarmony in the bridge) and I mixed it myself. It's not perfect but it represents the moment. 

Thank you for sticking with my music through the ups and downs of the journey, both mine and yours. I wrote this song with inspiration from stories people have told me about their lives and how they were affected by Covid19.

Australian multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter, Alisha Todd sings the songs of a curious traveller, bringing focus to the beauty and pain of humans and nature alike.

From her humble beginnings being raised on country and 90’s pop in small town Gympie to European explorations of getting lost to be found, Alisha’s music too has travelled and evolved in time to be the inspiring nuggets of unconditional encouragement needed while on the endless pursuit of happiness. She draws inspiration from travel and change; the separation from the expectation of who you were and the release from these shackles on the human psyche. “When you allow yourself to just be, the sky is not the limit, it’s the borders of your mind”. 

In 2019 Alisha independently released two singles. First came ‘Icelandia’, a dreamy, guitar laden love song, swimming in soaring vocal harmonies that transport the listener straight to the source of inspiration: the unforgettable and inexplicable peacefulness of Iceland. “If there is one place in the world I feel completely at ease, Iceland is it. I enjoy the silence there, it gives you so much space. I learned a lot from the way humans can be so generous to strangers”. 

The second offering, 'Chaos', is a powerful synth-driven lament for the current social and natural crises, co-produced by Scott French from Gold Coast’s Lovestreet Studios. It paints a hopeful future to cling to and says all the things that fill your conscience and are bursting to dance off the tip of your tongue.

In these pop-inspired landscapes Alisha pulls you into her world of wanderlust through reconnection with nature and the beauty and pain of human existence, the dark and the light. Her music is emotional. It bares a soul dancing in the Scandinavian mountains melded with the heart of a small-town Aussie girl. 

Alisha spent 2019 releasing music (both as Alisha Todd and with her 2nd project Volcanic Lovers) and played well loved Australian festivals Bello Winter Music, Caloundra Music Festival and Mullum Festival. In 2020, while the world slows down to breathe in, we can expect new music from Alisha, starting on April 23rd with her 3rd single ‘If You Wanna’.
