In a Sentimental Mood

Songs have often come to me as a melody, which I then quickly record on my computer.  After taking several tracks and combining them into one, I have my official 'sung' first draft.  At this point, I can find the notes I need and enter in the melody using Sibelius.  With this program, I can make the beginnings of a beautiful piece of music by adding feel, time signatures, key signatures, triplets, rhythm .... and even add a few simple chords over the top.  At this point, I hand the music over to Eric Tompkins.  His detailed, focused work helps transform the song by giving each section the it the time it needs to mature.  Finally, after continued rehearsal and experimentation, we finally have our final draft complete.  I use the word 'draft' as our songs are always evolving and changing as we do.  
In February of 2013, we finally were able to take our first song "My love" into the studio.  This is a very simple arrangement of the song, with few takes.  This recording is exactly what we wanted, as it very simply shows 'us.'  Eric's recording and mastering skills were used in his own studio, and provided us with this:  "My Love!' 

MY LOVE (Ali Henry original)

Ali is known to reinterpret and improvise on many familiar tunes, often ending up with entirely new melodies, lyrics and rhythmic grooves. With a repertoire that includes warm sensual rhythms of Brazil and emotionally charged blues done in the Etta James tradition, “her playfully collaborative approach to music, along with a tender yet exhilarating voice, makes an evening with Ali Henry a memorable experience,” Eric Tompkins, Guitarist. 

With a background rooted in gospel and bossa nova, and with influences such as Ella Fitzgerald, Astrud Gilberto, Eva Cassidy and Etta James, each helped her develop her own artistic flair, interpretation and passion toward acoustic bossa nova, blues and jazz music. With the 2011 launch of her album ‘On My Mind’, Ali teamed up with pianist Neville Bowman, and double bassist Bernie Addington of Kelowna, BC. Ali shared the stage with Royal Wood at the Prince George Playhouse, ColdSnap music festival 2014. Also in 2014, Ali released an original tune entitled ‘My Love,’ with guitarist Eric Tompkins, and two 2013 Holiday singles ‘Silent Night,’ and ‘Wave’ by Tom Jobim.  In 2015, Ali performed at Hotel Grand Pacific in Victoria’s Jazz Fest.

Currently, Ali continues working with Guitarist Jason Corbett in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and in BC’s interior.  With Ali on the cajon and vocals and Jason on guitar, together the duo performs timeless classics bringing unique rhythms, fresh arrangements and heat to each performance. Recently in 2015, Jason and Ali recorded ‘Beautiful Love,’ ‘Darn that Dream,’ ‘In a Sentimental Mood,’ and ‘You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To.’ These recordings can be found on Ali’s website and on sound cloud.  Now living in the Okanagan, Ali has begun working with guitarist Sean Bray.  The duo can be found performing various  award winning venues across the Okanagan and teaming up with other exceptional musicians such as Bernie Addington on the double bass and Neville Bowman on piano.  Looking ahead, Ali plans to record a new bossa nova album focusing on Tom Jobim’s classics, so stay tuned to hear more!
