After several heavy-hitting singles, and a massive debut album release, Rene LaVice’s name is well and truly scorched onto the international D&B map. Released in February ‘Insidious’ revealed the Toronto trailblazer’s broadest badman skills and scored him massive support the world over. 

Now we return to the album with two of our most exciting new signings. The first of a Rene LaVice remix series, this single sees both Chords and June Miller applying their technique to two of the many ‘Insidious’ highlights. 

Chords takes the lead. And he does so with his darkest vision to date. Taking the icy unforgiving croaks and groans of the sub-soaked original, he’s added more weight and brute force to the kicks and a trippier, more sporadic nature to the bass gurgles. All this is countered sweetly by occasional breezes of tantalising pads… Only to throw us back into the deep dark groove for more untamed bass fun.     

June Miller follow with an equally satisfying take on ‘Dark Passenger’. Paying respect to Rene’s original demonically hypnotic Q&A bassline, the Anglo/Dutch duo apply their trademark metallic industrial strength dynamics. Charged with full spectrum muscle, and broken nicely by a short, sweet body-shocking halfstep drop, it’s June Miller at their most savage and sonically succinct. Two killer remixes, three of our brightest new signees: ‘Insidious’ just keeps on giving. Stay tuned… There’s plenty more where these came from!

Mind Vortex return… And they’re packing some serious heat. Following the huge success of ‘Alive’ and ‘Arc’ earlier this year, here we find the duo presenting two of their most demonstratively dark, powerhouse pieces to date. Prepare to be blown away… 

‘Gravity’ is built up around a sharp, spiky riff that punches its way up and down the scale. Icy, hair-raising and galvanised with a genuine sense of urgency and danger, you can file this one under ‘concentrated undiluted dancefloor business’. 

Driven by heavyweight kicks and an obese bass groove, there’s no escaping its natural forces. Just like gravity itself. Trust us: Newton would be pulling some serious bass faces if he knew his theory had influenced this tearing slab of audio attitude. 

From attitude to altitude, ‘Catapult’ flings you into outer space the second you hear its purring metallic intro while snippets of vocals tease and please throughout. Then, without any warning whatsoever, an enormous synth riff ignites. Sawing through the mix with the power of an industrial timber mill, it winds up and up and up with raw audio insanity. Dropping into the duo’s most intense, muscular bass riffs to date, ‘Catapult’ is nagging, hooky and charged with the perfect amount of tech tenacity. Bona fide bass dynamite, if you’ve caught Andy C playing any time in the last few months, you’ll be well aware of its outrageous dancefloor effect. Truly massive.

Xtrah completes this first instalment with a bona fide hurter; whether it’s the rushy vocal and hardcore twinkles of the intro that hits you hardest or his incredible attention to detail on the percussive groove, this sums up why Xtrah has achieved the spotless scene status he’s achieved in such a short time.

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.

2013 is shaping up to be a fine vintage for DC Breaks. Having ignited the year with their cutlass-sharp ‘Shaman/Let It Go’ double A, the duo return to push us face-first into the summer with two more full-frontal underground bass workouts. 

‘Swag’ leads. The audio equivalent of the filthiest, naughtiest swearword you could possibly mutter, it’s an undiluted body-shock banger. Armed with a tearing bassline that refuses to sit still and discuss matters in a calm or sensitive manner, it’s a passionately vitriolic voyage into the darkest corners of drum & bass. Yet another astonishing success for the Bristol/London duo; few production outfits can deliver something with such brutal body and terrorising texture while maintaining clarity and dynamics like this. 

Recovered yet? Now jump on ‘Proton’ for another lesson in raw audio assaults. Living up to its positively charged title, the duo add a dash of euphoria to their strong-armed blend for yet another timeless example of D&B’s powerful potency. Bolstered by bullet-proof bass; powered by pinch-punch drum work and sizzled by stark, sweeping stabs, ‘Proton’ rolls and rampages with pristine party-primed mischief.
